Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Needs improvement We were traveling on Spyders (3-wheeled motorcycles) and could not find any rooms from Maryland to Martinsburg, VA. We stopped in at a hotel in Martinsburg and the clerk told us the Candlewood Suites had some rooms left, so she made the reservations for us. The hotel clerk at the Candlewood was very welcoming, and let us know of the services/amenities. The Cupboard was very good, as we had been traveling, it was after 9 at night, and we hadn't eaten since 1 p.m. e were not impressed when we walked into the room. Checking the bed, it did not look as if it had been changed - was wrinkled and sheets weren't real tight. Opening the microwave, there was an unpopped bag of popcorn in it and still felt warm. The bathroom was pretty clean, and towels were clean and white. Noise level was a bit more than used to, as we could hear voices and footsteps above us. When we checked out in the morning, the hotel clerk was very nice and pleasant. September 21, 2014

It is close to the highway, yet very quiet, and very pet friendly as my dog is a constant travel companion. September 10, 2014

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Smoke in nonsmoking rooms We requested a nonsmoking King suite for our 23 day stay for relocation. The room was on the 4th floor which was a mix of smoking and nonsmoking rooms. Our room was in between smoking rooms and the smoke from adjacent rooms came into our room through the vents. The front desk staff acknowledged it had happened before. I requested another room and was given a very much smaller room at the same rate. Because we are waiting for our house to be ready we have a lot of household stuff with us in addition to a dog. The smaller room was not adequate to hold all of our stuff. Not to mention we would have been paying the same rate for a room almost half the size; after we had made the reservation for the larger room in good faith. I returned to the front desk and was told their only King suites were on the 4th floor. It is unclear to me how they can advertise a nonsmoking room when it reeks of smoke when the other residents are home. Or who came up with such a strange floorplan to begin with. Or why the King suites are all on a smoking floor. We bought a room purifier but it didn't completely clean the air and at night the bathroom filled with the smell of smoke. We tried one more time to resolve the situation and were told the only room we could move to was a much smaller room and the rates were what they were and they couldn't do anything to change it. An email to the corporate office resulted in a reply that they had contacted the hotel and we would be contacted "prior to checkout". That would have been 2 weeks too late. We opted to move to a hotel in another city and will never consider Candlewood again, nor will we recommend them to anyone else. August 24, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by leisure travel with dog Excellent hotel; designed for longer stays, however I was only there one night. I ended up at Candlewood because the other hotels in that immediate area were not pet friendly. No hassels or problems during the stay. Desk people were friendly and had good dinner suggestions. Lobby area is a bit depressing and could use a good sprucing up. My only other suggestion would be to not allow employees to congregate near the rear enterances for their smoke breaks. It's a little disconcerning to come in after dark and have five or six people standing around the doors. August 20, 2014
