A city that dates back to the 9th century, Madrid has a rich history and plenty to see. Architectural sights that mustn't be missed include the Palacio de Cibeles (formerly the Palacio de Comunicaciones), the Royal Palace of Madrid and Spain's National Library Building.
Madrid has more than 40 museums, including the Prado Museum, Museum of the Americas and the Museum of Money. Once you've had your cultural fill, why not indulge in some retail therapy? Madrid is home to a huge range of shops, including department store El Corte Ingles on Calle de Preciados. On the same street and throughout the surrounding area you'll find lots of mainstream stops. Head to the Salamanca District for boutiques and designer labels and make for the El Rastro flea market for traditional bargains.
Football fans will already be well aware of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home to the world famous Galácticos of the Real Madrid football team. Also in the city is the Vincente Calderón Stadium where Atlético Madrid ply their trade.
You can fly straight into Madrid's international airport from all over Europe, including Manchester, London and Edinburgh in the UK. Madrid's railway stations connect the city by high-speed train to other major Spanish cities including Barcelona and Valencia, as well as to other European cities.
