Good choice for hogmanay

When I booked the hotel I thought I was paying a lot for a standard king size room with breakfast and dinner included because it was New Year. On arrival we found we had a huge room with two easy chairs and TV, more like a suite than a standard room. It was worth the price, for a special occasion, but we could have been just as comfortable in a smaller room. Perhaps the booking information could be clearer. Overall we had a great stay with good service but the restaurant fell short of expectations. Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice. The set dinner menu (from which included dinner could be taken) was not a sparkling choice and had several items unavailable for the three nights we stayed. An alternative was to get a £20.00 reduction from the main menu, again with some items unavailable. The restaurant should have foreseen the supply problem and should have created a menu that had all items available. In general, the service and food was good, especially the steaks, and staff responded well to critique when given. The swimming pool is small but clean and warm enough for a decent swim. Overall our stay was very pleasant, although we probably would not book dinner there every night if we stayed again. It is an ideal place to stay for the Edinburgh sights and around the hotel area are many small bistros and pub eateries, so plenty of choice.

Great location and excellent facilities

The location for the hotel is brilliant and it is right next to Rose street with nice pubs, some with even live music. In addition it's right next to Prince Street, being the main street in Edinburugh, with shopping areas, tourist attraction, transport to airport through Tram etc. Also the Hotel itself has very efficient and friendly staff. I chose the place because it provides facilities like swimming pool, gym, heated rooms ans spa. And all these facilities are worth checking out and contribute to your overall experience positively. Also nice room service. The only issue I had was with the place was with the extra bathroom equipment provided. I asked for shaving kit, which was given free of no charge, which is great and I am thankful for it, but it was of such a poor quality like the shaving blade that I had to buy my own anyway. Also the rooms on the second day were cleaned really late. But that's just a small part overall the experience was really great.

New Year at the Roxburghe

When we arrived the computers were down, and unfortunately I was not very well so not in the best of moods after a protracted journey. The staff did all they could until they were able to sort out our rooms, and were very considerate. The room was spacious, clean and coffee/tea and toiletries all replenished daily and in generous quantities. We had a wonderful stay over the New Year and thoroughly enjoyed the New Year Ball, the food and entertainment were very good, and the staff very attentive throughout. I could not fault the service we received at all times during our visit. I would not hesitate to recommend the Roxburghe, and I hope that the recent change of ownership doesn't impinge on either the service or affordability of this excellent hotel.

We would give this hotel a second chance

We booked to stay for four nights over hogmany arriving on the 29/12 and leaving on the 02/01. Overall the hotel was ok and we would stay here again. Location was excellent. A few minutes from George and Princes Street. Can't fault this. Room was comfortable and of a good quality. The part that knocked the stay was the service in the restuarant at night. We had to eat here as it was DBB rates we had paid for. As the nights progressed more and more items were taken off the menu so choice was poor. The excuse of no mussels being 'its the wrong time of year for them' was literally beyond me. Also the bills at the table were never correct and even after having to stay to resolve them each night the final bill had additonal mistakes on from the restaurant. These were quickly resolved by the reception team when we checked out but still left a tarnish on the stay. The hotel was busy but the service was very slow and one night we didn't get our main course until 22:40 hours. We left the restaurant after 23:00 hours,,, On our last day it came to light that the hotel had been sold to a new company and they took over the following weekend. Maybe this is why there was few staff and nothing on the menu.
