Let down by poor service, disorganisation and poor attention to detail

Arranged this stay as a treat with my girlfriend, but neither of use felt we'd been well treated afterwards. I'm not someone who enjoys complaining, but given that we only stayed one night, I'm amazed that in such a beautiful building in a great location, they managed to get so much wrong in such a short space of time. The hotel's in the heart of Edinburgh, the room we stayed in was large enough and the bathroom was spacious. Otherwise we were really disappointed with our stay.
The Room:
The room itself was spacious, the décor slightly dated but comfortable enough, however it was not entirely clean: cobweb on bathroom ceiling, the dresser had been wiped but not properly cleaned, there were cracked tiles in the bathroom and there was a large deep scratch about 6 inches long in the bedhead. All that creates a pretty bad impression. The bed was enormous but the mattress was clearly past its best with a hollow in the middle, which pretty much defeats the object of having a large bed! If you are offered room 373 ask for a change!

The Food:
We decided to eat in the restaurant. Our waitress was helpful but the food was extremely slow. Our starters of onion soup and seafood cocktail took a long time to arrive although they are basic enough to prepare. They were both bland, rather than the simple dishes we'd hoped for, and we didn't finish them. The wait for our main course was really bad. After about 30 mins I asked the woman who seemed to be managing the restaurant if she could check on our main courses. She came back to tell us that our food was just being plated up and would be about two or three minutes. Then after about 5 minutes our waitress appeared with a plate of bread and olives with no explanation and disappeared. We were confused what had now happened to our main courses, and personally I don't want to be filled up with bread. I would rather have had an honest explanation from the restaurant manager telling us how long we would actually have to wait, rather than this sudden extra unwanted course. When our main course did eventually arrive, some ten minutes later, the Gressingham duck breast I had ordered was excellent, beautifully cooked with parsnip chips. Unfortunately the mash side order was barely warm. When the waitress returned to check on our food, I told her and she immediately contacted the chef who prepared a fresh side, but I was already more than halfway through my dish. I felt the staff and the restaurant manager missed several opportunities to rescue a bad situation. Simply being honest and apologetic would have been a good start instead of making us feel as though we were being difficult in checking on our food. Breakfast the next morning was however excellent. It was extremely well run. We were properly welcomed. The staff were attentive and kept our cooked breakfasts warm while we finished our cereals, and the black pudding, bacon and scramble were all excellent.

Service
In addition to the poor service in the evening restaurant, we had problems with the staff cleaning the rooms. We went out for some shopping in the morning after breakfast and when I returned one and a half hours before checkout, my bags were gone from the room. Eventually I found a cleaner who told me they'd probably been left at lost property and would be waiting at reception. This has never happened to me before and I was just amazed that they did this. It was also obviously inconvenient as I'd planned to change and use my toiletries before checking out.

At reception, on arrival on the Friday evening, we were checked in by a trainee. She could not find our booking for some time or follow the spelling of our names. Her English was not good and she rattled through scripted info about joining loyalty scheme - neither of us could follow what she was saying and I would have preferred a good welcome with relevant info. On checkout the lobby was chaos, with long queues at the desk l,uggage all over the place in the doorway area and no one trying to organise the situation.

All in all, extremely unimpressive for this historic hotel.

Fabulous

Stayed one night dinner bed and breakfast with friends when on shopping and theatre trip.
Welcome was very warm all staff were so helpful and friendly.
Dinner and breakfast were excellent - plenty of choice and good quality.
Never used the spa facilities but will next time
Very well positioned for shops and restaurants
Our room faced onto George St and whilst didn't present a problem for myself, 2 friends found it a bit noisy so perhaps a room facing the quadrant might be quieter.
Will definitely stay at this hotel again

Really enjoyed our two night stay.staff were very helpful, room was clean and bed very comfortable.would definitely stay again.used the restaurant for both breakfeast and evening meals.Each time very nice although same menu for evening meals.Not really an issue for us as only stayed for the two nights.

Great Hotel and Location

I've stayed at the Roxburghe a few times in the last 18 months and once again it did not disappoint. Very fresh comfortable room, the club lounge was excellent for a quiet breakfast on a Sunday morning and the staff were all attentive and very pleasant.
I would always recommend the Roxburghe if you want a very good Edinburgh City Centre hotel. I look forward to my next visit.
