The Grandeur of Heythrop did not at all extend to the Hotel

While the setting of Heythrop Park, the Main House and the Estate may be greatly impressive, the Crown Plaza Hotel complex itself was more greatly disappointing.
Primarily of concern was the very poor level of cleanliness of the bedroom and bathroom, the state of latter not being something I would like to describe on paper. It seemed that scant regard was paid to the daily cleaning of the room, certainly on the day on which my partner and I took occupancy, neither by house-keeping staff, nor by any supervisory personnel. Further, a note on the window explained the reason it was permanently locked was to "ensure the efficient operation of the air conditioning system". Hotel management should not deny their guests access to the fresh air, and certainly not over any draconian cost saving measure which ensures a state, bordering foul, air quality in bedrooms. So while I would much prefer to have something positive to say, a deeply uncomfortably night, in deeply uncomfortable surroundings, ensures that this is one establishment I will not be frequenting again.

Lovely location

The hotel has a great amount of fantastic qualities, it's location is perfect set in acres of land and the drive to get there gives it the element of being private and exclusive. A real retreat. The facade of the Manor House is simply stunning and you can imagine how it must have been like to live there two centuries ago.
Inside, the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and the interior really is modern and clean and there's a nice atmosphere . We chose a family room which exceeded expectations. Two good sized double beds and a seating area with a television that swivelled round so once the kids were asleep you could sit and watch TV without disturbing them. The bathroom was huge, with a walk in shower and separate bath.
We had booked dinner on our first evening in the restaurant opposite the Terrace restaurant as it had a carvery and was slightly cheaper. This was a mistake. We walked in and it felt like we had entered a conference! The windows were covered in thick curtains all around even though it was light outside and there was no music and no atmosphere whatsoever. In fact it felt like a completely different hotel to the one we had been in! It was really strange and the food wasn't the best quality either. Sadly the food not being very good was a reoccurring theme that continued throughout our stay. We couldn't understand why a really good 4star hotel in every other way would be happy to serve 3 star food, at best. The worst example of the food being poor was ordering from their bar menu on our second evening. Well, three plates of food were inedible and had to be sent back. We found out that they had all been microwaved as they were frozen. When we complained we were told 'that's the way we like it here.' We were absolutely astounded!!! Breakfast, however was good and the leisure facilities also, although it would have been nice to have had a jacuzzi, but I'm just being picky. The pool, sauna and steam were excellent. On the whole a really wonderful hotel but in my view let down by one element - the food. Please please have fresh food. We really don't want frozen food that is microwaved and obviously doesn't taste that good.
