Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Hairyscot1314 Worst IHG Hotel I have ever encountered
Over the years I have come to expect consistently good hotels at IHG properties, with Crowne Plaza properties a bit above the average. This hotel was a severe disappointment. The rooms are badly in need of refurbishment, but worse than that are inadequately cleaned; the carpet in our room was so disgustingly stained and dirty that I was reluctant to walk on it in bare feet. After our arrival discarded and dropped food was left in corridors for more than 24 hours before being cleaned up, and then only when we complained.
I will think twice before staying at another Crowne Plaza. This hotel is damaging the brand.

When I checked in at approx 3:30 pm, I was asked if I minded being on the 14th floor. Since I didn't, I was assigned Rm 1405. When I got to the 14th floor, it was in chaos. Room service trays littered the floor, linen carts blocked the hallway, dirty linens were out in the hall. But I plowed thru to my room. Opened the door and everything was fine. EXCEPT, it was very hot as the air conditioner was off. However, it soon cooled a bit, I dressed and went out. When I returned, everything was fine. [and the hall had been cleaned!]. The next morning, I found there was only a rapid trickle of water from the shower head and the water was stone cold! Having an appointment, I showered in cold water. Not pleasant. I reported this to the desk who said they'd take care of it and offered me a complimentary breakfast. After breakfast, I returned to the room to find the engineer there. He explained he'd simply had to "increase the pressure" down stairs to get an adequate supply of hot water to the 14th floor. Problem solved.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Sleepless13 Confused what happen to customer service??
First my Check in Clerk was very rude, should of knew this would be a clue of my stay. Weird noises when i checked in and up until midnight. Evidently construction was going on. But who does that up until MIDNIGHT? The walls in the room were filthy, the floor was lumpy. The people in the room next to me left their TV blasted so loud Management had to come turn it off @ 11:45 pm, bathroom counter and small kitchen area counter was filthy and gritty. The Chairs were stained, not a good look at all!! the walls are just too thin I could hear when someone in room next door turned their sink on. I left 5 hours earlier because i just wanted to get the heck out of there. Bright spot the lady at out check out was sympathetic and offered me free breakfast. The bell men and Valet people were also nice as well. And another clerk did help me with directions to my destination. But that first Clerk needs a class on Customer Service techiniques. I really dont think he knows any better!! I hope thats the case.

My husband and son came with me to houston for the first time to visit family member. I really wanted them to enjoy their time in Houston. The Staff here went out of their way to make sure every moment of our stay was enjoyable. The front desk was pleasant, helpful and efficient. Our room was more than comfortable and clean. Did we have a problem with the toilet one night and was it corrected with little inconvenience? Absolutely! Is anything ever really perfect? This stay came very close. My criticism is the breakfast buffet is a bit pricey...best thing about the stay...Your coffee is like drinking pure silk!!! And it was free and available in the business center anytime! Think I will come back just for a cup of coffee!

My husband and I are both patients at MD Anderson. The medical rate is wonderful and the room is nice. The parking spaces are too narrow. Our stay 10/19/2012, when I had radiation treatment at MD Anderson, was terrible, due to the bad food we were served in hotel restaurant, Bristol Bar and Grill. My husband, who has had throat surgery, ordered the tenderloin, which was dry and tough, and definitely had been reheated. When the waiter was informed, he said he could not adjust the bill. We asked for a manager, but were told one was not available. We were charged for the food, and paid the bill. We immediately went to the front desk, and the clerk said we would be reimbursed. The next day, when we inquired about the refund, we were told that the restaurant manager would not give a refund, but we could eat at the restaurant for free. We declined the offer, and the manager said we would receive the refund. This was October 2012, and still no refund. We will never again eat at the restaurant.

I have stayed at this hotel several times before and use it because of my Priority points. The overall stay was good, the staff is friendly and is alwas helpful. The major drawbacks are the extremely cramped parking spaces. The were not set up to accomadate SUV's. The WIFY service was extremely poor and always has been. I was getting stronger signal strength from the Sheraton across the street.

This hotel is a real curiosity....why is the annual seminar always held here? There are so many attractive, modern, innovative properties to choose from. This venue is outdated, but not in the kitschy, intriguing way that an old renovated bank might be. It just seems tired. Our room was dark and at the end of the hall. The bed was too soft. The AC was too cold. The venue just isn't that attractive. The restaurant was fair.

Just wanted to say thank you to the banquet/meeting staff. We recently held a training seminar at this facility. The staff was great, very attentive to the needs of our meeting and the value was excellent for our small group. Thanks to everyone on the staff.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Frank83 Overall experience was good
I experienced the Crowne Plaza Houston River Oaks as a good hotel for business/meeting/conference traveler types. Basically it has everything one needs and offers comfortable room.
Self-parking for $9.00 was a little more expensive than posted in my reservation confirmation ($8.00). Not a big deal; I just wanted to mention it.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by ed777 Good value, good service, but little things that could be improved
We stay here regularly whenever visiting my wife's oncologist at MDA. It's great value. Staff are very helpful, polite, pleasant, seem to genuinely care.
The rooms do tend to need some servicing. Both rooms we went to had some problem with the thermostat. The first one also had a semi plugged up toilet.
2nd room had adjoining door through which we could hear almost everything. The first couple of days, our neighbors were very loud people so it was a bit unpleasant. Thereafter, we had more considerate neighbors.
Maybe the hotel can try to do something about soundproofing the adjoining door.
Overall good value and satisfactory experience. (Bring earplugs in case of noise problems, especially with adjoining door rooms).

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by CTR5111 Excellent stay...highly recommend!
The hotel provided one of the best stays I have ever had! The staff was prompt, courteous and extremely helpful (even telling me how to save time--without prompting!) The room (suite) was immaculate and the bed was exceedingly comfortable. Very nice, luxurious atmosphere. Located near MD Anderson and other hospitals, The Galleria, the Houston Zoo (all places I went) but many other terrific restaurants, movie theaters and other places of interest (went there too). Will definitely stay again next time I am in Houston!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Jake2686 Front desk great, food not so much
The room was nice for the most part. However, the food was one of the worst I have ever had in my life. They need to have a chef that knows how to make an omelette and she did not use gloves when sprinkling cheese on my food. I ordered a quesadilla that appeared as if it was leftovers from 2 weeks prior. If you plan on starving yourself or you're on a low calorie diet, this is the perfect place to stay.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by DrJohn1 Personal attention
Concierge was very responsive to my concern about mechanical noise in my first room, which engineer could not solve. She found me another room promptly, allowing me to retire early, sleep well, and get up at 4 am as required for my work schedule. Hotel has been used by me frequently because of this personal attention to guest needs. Staff is superior to many "fancier" Houston hotels I have stayed in .

there was alot of activity in the late night 2am - 4 am after bars cloed and when complianed no one called to tell the offending guest . it was all over the hotel in and out and loud noise slamming doors and running in halls. a security person could have soldved it - liked the security in the parking area - food was good in the resturant. - no need for a micro wave if no food avaliable in the git shop to microwave. HATED the gift shop was not part of the chain and could not charget to room - flet like i was at the corner 7/11 not a hotel where i was catered to - - wifi worked some of the times - but good it was free. -

The shuttle guys were excellent in helping us. Very cheerful and willing. The only problem was I was told free breakfast when I booked the room only to get there and find out it wasn't so. The person named Mandy took care of us and we apprecoated it very much. People with medical problems usually have to watch their pennies. Thanks.

This is a very nice property, however it is the staff that makes it a great hotel. From check-in to check-out everyone always gave a smile and were helpful. The staff tried to make my stay a "10" and they did it. The Meet and Greet was very well done and I met many very nice and interesting new friends. I look forward to returning next year!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Jackie27again Lock mafunctions 4 (or is it 5) times different days
Stayed for 12 days. After about a week, the room key would not work in the lock, for the next 4 nights. After the second time this happened I was beginning to think they (Hotel) must think I'm an idiot,,same patronizing questions every time...was it near a cell phone? etc. No! No! No!. Each time it happened, they just re-keyed. The third or fourth time they sent the engineer. I believe he just checked the batteries. I told them I don't believed the batteries are at fault and they should change the lock. What do I know!!!!! Last time it happened, I was furious. Demanded that they change the lock. The engineer they sent was a much nicer person, very accommodating, etc. and changed the lock rather quickly. I was impressed with him. He is young man with either Asian or Hispanic features. After lock change, no problems, at least for two additional nights before I left.
By the way they should have suspected the lock as on several occasions, the new keys did not work in the lock. One time I had them make three keys and I put them in different locations. None of them worked.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by dmck43 could be better
This hotel could be better for the price. It is a business type hotel next to the freeway and has a nice lobby, but the hallway smelled of mildew and moisture. I was ok with all of that and the front desk was great when we checked in, but I had some issues later in our stay.
Before we went out to our conference I let the front desk know that another person would be arriving and that I needed to leave a key for them. The front desk had me fill out a card with his name and had a key with it for him. Later that night my friend called because the front desk had no key and would not let him in. They did not know what I what talking about when I spoke with them on the phone.I had to drive back from the conference to let him in. I found this confusion after the shift change to be very inconvenient because I had already planned for it. It made the bad smell and the luke warm shower water more irritating.
I stay in budget hotels all the time and have a very high tolerance for worn out hotels, but for the class of hotel, I would stay elsewhere.

We had the best bed and pillows ever this stay! As usual the staff was great and very accommodating. The new vans are very comfortable. It's nice to have that option when going to the medical center. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Liz361 Close enough to the Galleria.
Upon arrival at the reception desk we were transferred to three different representatives during our check-in. For being on the membership loyalty program, we were told to pick a snack from a display and after choosing I was told they had ran out, this happened with three different items and I was given a salty granola bar instead. Don't get your hopes up when you see the giant chocolate bar.... they should have removed the items they no longer had.
Our corner suite was pleasantly large, comfortable and clean. The view of the city is great from the 14th floor. The furnishings and decor are tasteful but very outdated. The air conditioner/heater unit in the bedroom is a relic, but it does work. I understand a renovation requires a substantial amount of money but it should be on the short list.
The bathroom was huge and had very good lighting. In the shower the celling is low and although I am of average height I would accidentally hit the celling with my hand. The paint is peeling off where the shower head touches the ceiling.
In the bedroom, I found a clear plastic shower cap wrapped around the fire/smoke detector . It was on the wall a few feet above the television. Obviously housekeeping does not look up. The bed sheets are stiff and make a lot of noise when I moved around during my sleep, keeping me awake for most of the night.
I must mention, the parking is not free. Not even for people only visiting guests at the hotel.
Overall the hotel is ok. I might stay there again, only to benefit from the loyalty program. I did expect better standards from a Crowne Plaza hotel.
