Fun and Comfortable Stay! (Winter vacation)

February 26, 2015

My family and I LOVED our time at the Crowne Plaza. It exceeded our expectations for cleanliness, friendliness of staff, and comfort and we were pleased overall by our time spent at the hotel. It was also very conveniently located within a short walking distance of the town/tourist area shops, cafes, Olympic oval, and arena. The only downfall was the price which was a little high but man, what a fantastic week end! We'd like to come back!

Great Hotel

February 26, 2015

This is the second time my husband and I have stayed at this hotel and we wouldn't stay at any other hotel! Rooms are very clean and the beds and pillows are very comfortable. Staff is very friendly and they were very excited to tell us that our room had been upgraded for the weekend! We were very happy to hear that because we were celebrating our anniversary! Bar area is a great place to hang out and have a couple of cocktails while sitting in the over size chairs and couches! The only request I have is I wish we could get rid of the hill that you have to climb to get back to the hotel if you don't want to drive your car. Look on the bright side if you go out for dinner and want to work off what you just ate the hill climb is a great way to help! Look forward to staying again!

Dirty room and Hotel Staff did not compensate

February 24, 2015

I was extremely disappointed by this hotel. Upon arrival I noticed a used towel left by the bed, hair on the first two clean towels that I picked up in the bathroom, bird poop on the balcony chairs, the heater made awful loud noises all night long and the bed was very uncomfortable and lumpy. The next morning the front desk staff were shocked at my story and the only thing they offered me in compensation was half the price of the hotel stay for the night. The restaurant staff were however WONDERFUL! Unfortunately I plan not to stay at this hotel again.

This is a confusing hotel

February 24, 2015

I will try to give it as fair a rating as I can. Some of the hotel is awesome, and some of it is stuck in the 80's and before.. This is a confusing hotel. I'll explain why down the review.

Lets start with the pros.

1. It is well located.
- Some people would disagree but here is why it is well located. It is walking distance to Mirror Lake. There is a bit of a hill but then again it is a town with a lake with hills around it. You for the most part don't need a car if you want to spend time in Lake Placid / Mirror Lake section.
2. It is clean
- The hotel was clean. People were cleaning everything (Floors and rooms every day)
3. Reasonable rates
- Fair rates for the area
4. Pool and Hot tub in the building enclosed.
5. Clean beds comfortable beds.

The Con's
1. Missing amenities.
- The gym had some excellent new equipment (bikes with tv's) and some terrible old equipment (treadmills). The universal gym was missing parts and missing free weights.
- There is no sauna or steam room. If you call yourself luxury these are necessities.
- No game room to relax. pool / ping pong etc.
2. Weird signs all over the place.
- Can't bring a drink of any type near the fireplace in the lobby. WHY!? This is a winter town. i want to sit by the fire.
3. The hot tub was way to small
4. The pool area could have been so much nicer.
- There are these great windows that look out onto the town, beautiful wood paneling, pretty murals on the walls.. But the ceiling was a dropped white ceiling. I would have loved to see this a glass ceiling.. I can't be outdoors but I want it to feel like it is.
5. The rooms had pictures screwed into the walls.
- Yes you heard me. The sides of the picture frames had screws in them to avoid people pulling them off the walls.
6. Everyone seemed unhappy to be there.
- There was this vibe of everyone being unhappy. Not sure why but it felt that way. Maybe it was the cold weather.
7. Service was not a top priority.
- I asked the front desk for cue tips. They said they had it. Instead of offering to deliver it to my room they told me to go the front desk. (This is the difference between a 3 and a 4 star hotel.
8. The rooms had some new furniture and some really old furniture. As if a renovation partially happened.

Situations that could have been better from a service standpoint.

I came back from skiing and I really needed an advil. I went to the vending machine and they were out. I asked the front desk if they had any more or knew when the machine was going to get refilled. They said "No more and we don't know".

How hard would it be to have extra sealed Advil packets behind the counter which could be given out or sold to patrons who need it? It seems like an easy thing to do.

In the morning we wanted a quick breakfast. We went to the restaurant and ordered. We explained to the staff that we wanted something quick and they offered us the buffet or we could order off the menu. We were asked to wait int he lobby where it was more comfortable. We did. 15 mins later, no food. My girlfriend went in and the maitredee realized something was wrong. She went into the kitchen and brought out our food. It was unfortunately cold and caused us to be late.

When I called the front desk for cue tips they said they had them (a plus late at night). A great hotel would have said I will bring this to your room. they told me to go to the front desk.

I expect a Crowne Plaza to be a higher end brand then some of the other ones. However my experience was not that.

The rooms were comfortable, and clean which is a great plus. the bathroom was renovated, and the lobby was very nice. However it felt as though something was missing. As if they partially did a renovation and missed a lot of the small things which make things perfect. Like an 80% job.

I heard from some other guests who have stayed here in the past. They told me about other things that used to be at the hotel. A game room / sauna / glass roof in the pool area / steam room.

I am stuck indoors in the middle of winter. I want these amenities. Otherwise how is this luxury?

This is why I think this is a three star hotel. IT isn't bad. It is good. It just isn't elevated to the 4 to 5 star level.

Would I go back? Probably. But I wouldn't pay more than what I paid this time for the room.
