Woefully Underprepared - Did Not Connect!

While on our annual visit to Reading, PA for the Berks Jazz Festival we had, for lack of a better term, a difficult time with the hotel staff regarding our reservation. This trip was planned for nearly a year and the reservations were made six months in advance after tickets went on sale for the associated Jazz shows. Our plan was to have an adjoining/connecting room for one of the four nights we would be there so that we could have a meeting/gathering with friends / musicians in residence, display photo's and have lots of food. When making the reservations with IHG, by phone, I explained the purpose of the extra room and the need for the connecting type. The IHG reservation agent confirmed her understanding of our request and provided the room numbers of the adjoining rooms, confirmation numbers, etc. Several times after then I confirmed the reservation including on our arrival where I also confirmed the need for extra chairs and a microwave oven. The microwave was for our personal room and we had to ask several times for that. When we needed the connecting room the next day we were told it was not available and we would have to accept another room. They provided no explanation, no caring, no anything... just take it or leave it. To be fair, they did offer a meeting room but there was no refrigerator, no microwave, no media connection for the TV and we would have to move all the food and decorations across the hotel. Also, while we were waiting for answers, the hotel staff went to a meeting and left us waiting for better than two hours... time we really needed to prepare. We cancelled the extra room and jammed everyone into our personal space which worked, but not optimally. We were stressed unnecessarily! Further, the chairs did not arrive on time either so people were left standing until that was resolved. This was a great hotel, at one time, but they were woefully under-prepared to handle the needs of their guests. This was well evidences by the many complaints we heard from others whose experience was similar, especially with reservation issues. I am most disappointed with the lackluster attitude of the staff and hotel manager. A most important expectation and reason for being at this property was not realized!
