Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by San48 Lovely location for poor hotel
We booked 3 executive rooms for our 2 night stay. The British Rowing Team was booking in when we arrived so this procedure took some time. The location was perfect for our requirements as we had a day out on a barge on the river booked only 10 mins away from the hotel. Also the hotel was beside the Thames itself which was very nice. As the weather was so good we had our breakfast and dinner outside on the patio which was lovely. The food itself was very average mind you. The executive rooms are very small, as are the lifts (tiny!) and the executive lounge was 'unavailable' to us throughout our stay even though we saw others in there and no good explanation was offered. There was an event going on in the function room of the hotel below our rooms on one of the evenings of our stay so there was extremely loud music blaring out up to midnight at least. I do feel the hotel should warn you of this particularly if your room is directly above the function making sleep impossible. To add to this - even though I appreciate this is not the fault of the hotel - there was a two day outdoor 'festival' being held on the opposite side of the river, meaning there was loud music going on from mid afternoon, right through the evening and on through the night. A peaceful break by the Thames this most certainly was NOT. The hotel pool and gym is very nice.

The hotel was lovely, clean and very comfortable. We had a family room as we have a 19 week old baby. There was ample space for both the travel cot & the pram and all the other things you have to take with you for the little ones.
The bed was extremely comfy and the bedding & towels were also lovely quality.
The location was perfect for taking a stroll along the Thames and also perfect for getting to Henley & Marlow.
Breakfast was very good too. Overall if we were in Reading again, we would pick this hotel again.

Rubbish service from staff who when I complained couldn't have cared less. Really dissapointing as when I stayed here last year the hotel was great. Won't be returning again. Can anyone recommend a decent hotel in reading?

Stayed for 3 nights and the care / attitude of the reception / breakfast staff we came into contact with on first 2 nights were well below normal IHG levels of service. The quality of some of the cooked breakfast food was also well below normal standards, and having stayed at 37 different IHG hotels in the past few years this was very disappointing, especially at this price level. The room was spotless, but due to its location there was some inevitable traffic noise. Limited pool times for children, and even then part roped off for exercise class.

I thought that to lift up my membership status, by staying in 3 different IHG Establishments. I thought , instead of using Holiday inn , that I would try "Crowne Plaza". Sorry , apart from the excellent welcome from the chap on Reception , I was overall disappointed. Double Exec' room with only one Bathrobe! Dinner for 2 , almost £80 and , though the fillet Steak was amazing , my Chicken supreme was dry and way over cooked , our starters I confess were amazing , making our Mains even more disappointing :( Had the Sraff not been so attenrive and Professional , I would have complained at the time , and they totally deserved the tip.
The Breakfast left a lot to be desired , not including the bland white awful sausages. Even , Supermarket sausages have more flavour. I personally will have to wait some time before booking "Crowne Plaza" again. I will stick to Holiday Inns. And , I didn't get the Membership upgrade that I had thought I would get! I.E. 3 different IHG Establishments :(

The hotel is in an excellent location by Caversham Bridge and the rooms are comfortable. However our experience was let down by the 'welcome' we received at reception on arrival. As a Platinum member it is nice to get an upgrade but it is very embarrassing to be talked about by the 2 reception staff as if you are not standing in front of them! One of the reception staff who seemed to be in training asked the other one if we should be given an upgrade to which they replied 'no'. There were none of the normal civilities about whether we would like a wake up call or a newspaper but a form was put in front of me telling me to fill it in if I wanted either. It is a far cry from the reception I receive from Hilton hotels as a Diamond Hilton honors member. It is a shame really as we decided not to give the hotel our custom and ate out at local restaurants.

Great position overlooking the thames with good local restaurants and only 20 minute walk to the centre of town for good shopping. Would recommend the hotel for its' facilities and comfort. The staff were a little sharp with their service, but would not want to put anyone off by this comment alone. The breakfast was very good, but no atmosphere in the evening although we ate elsewhere because of a limited menu.

Being my first stay in a Crowne Plaza. I can only say I felt a little disappointed :( The air conditioning had a mind of its own. The breakfast was no where near the standard I would expect at IHG hotel. Bland tasteless Sausages for one. The staff running around like headless chickens. Indeed one chap , trying to balance 2 coffee pots under his ARM , managed to spill some over a guests chair , thankfully he had just stood up prior. Our room apart from the air conditionin was lacking in both towels? AND had to ask for a second robe (in a DOUBLE Executive) for my wife. I can honestly say , I will stick with Holiday inn in future. They have never let me down.

Reading may not spring to mind as a romantic location, but this CP in Caversham, but within walking distance of the railway station , is a magnificent oasis. Great service , obliging staff & generally excellent, although the Club room was closed a very acceptable alternative was available.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Phil19 Not what we had expected
Looking at the reviews and the details of the hotel, as a Platinum member, we were looing forward to an upgraded room for a weekend away, at least one looking over the Thames, not looking out on a petrol station. We also expected use of the Club Lounge. Unfortuntely there was a block booking made with a rowing club and all the executive rooms had been allocated and the club lounge had been taken over by the rowing club.
We were told that as a gesture, the bar was availble between 6.00 -8.00 and canpaes would be available. These amounted to some taco crisps with dips. It wasn't until we asked if this was it, that after some disussion we had 2 fried prawns each. The same thing happened the next day and the manger manged to get prawns again and some nuts. We were also offered breakfast free, but as we had already had this in our rate, the manager offered us bonus points. In the circumstances the manger tried to make the best of things but it was dissapointing and probably the worst stay I have expereniced in a Cown Plaza Hotel

Spent last weekend at Caversham and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Plaza. We had an executive room with a large balcony overlooking the river. The weather was brilliant so we were able to sit out and enjoy the ambience. It was the weekend of the Henley Regatta and was fun to watch boats and rowers make their way up stream. The room was beautifully clean, the bed very comfortable and we slept well. There were events going on in the hotel which made it busy and fun but we were not disturbed at all. The staff were very polite and helpful even down to the chirpy maids.

The hotel is lovely and having secure parking is a bonus. Unfortunately our room (which was a family room) vwas on the road side and the noise of the traffic all night was horrific keeping us all awake. Having travelled from Cornwall and having to travel back again the next day we really could have done with a good nights sleep. Our son slept on the sofa bed and said it was very uncomfortable - probably ok for small children 3-7 years. We would not stay again but only because of the noise.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Netcracker01 What has happened to this once good hotel?
I have stayed the the Crowne Plaza in Reading on numerous occiasions since 2006 and was unhappy for the first time. My room on the first floor had wall paper hanging off the walls and the windows had not been cleaned to the point that you could barely see out. The lamp in the corner of the room did not have a switch, so i resorted to unscrewing the bulb to turn it off. The bath room smelt musty / mouldy. The front of house check in staff barely spoke English and spoke so fast i couldn't understand a word spoken. The whole expereince was a disappointment as a top price for what on paper is supposed to be a 4 star hotel to find it distictly and barely one star

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by daffodil56 great customer service, comfortable rooms, really nice location
there was a bit of a mix up over our oom allocation when we arrived but that was due to the Crowne plaza central booking system and not the hotel. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and sorted it out quickly and professionally, There was a wedding at the hotel but that didn't impact on us in terms of any noise or disruption.
The pool area was great and the hotel itself was in a really nice location right on the river with some nice shops, pubs and restaurants just across the bridge in Caversham. Room was clean and comfortable.
We booked an executive room, which included access to the executive lounge with complimentary drinks and snacks, which was a nice start to the evening.
All in all an enjoyable stay

I booked to stay at the Crowne Plaza for my sister's surprise 60th birthday, and as we were going on a boat trip from Caversham to Henley-on-Thames at 11.00am I asked if we could check in early as we wouldn't be back until 6.30pm. The staff were absolutely great and we were able to check into all 3 rooms at 10.30am. So, many thanks to the Housekeeping Staff who had the rooms ready. Lovely big bed, and pillows sooooo comfy.
We all had a very nice 3 course meal in the evening and once again the staff were great!
I would definitely recommend this hotel, and look forward to staying again in the very near future!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Red48 Great staff, comfortable but bland hotel.
The main areas and rooms are all spotlessly clean but, like chain hotels the world over, the building is a little bland and lacking in atmosphere. Once through the door, you could be in any IHG property anywhere in the world. The plus side of this is that you know what you are getting when you book, but on the negative side you aren't really experiencing the place you are visiting.
The best attributes of this particular hotel are the staff, all of whom in my experience are friendly and welcoming. When you stay in hotels as much as I do, that is very welcome.
A downside? The aircon in this property is noisy and can keep you awake.

This is a great hotel stop in the Reading area. The location on the river is relaxing, and provides easy access to trails for walking or jogging along the river. The hotel itself is serviced very well, and has a nice relaxed feel. However, for me the stand-out feature was the excellent staff - efficient, friendly and helpful in every way.

A very comfortable stay. The room was clean and very well appointed. Although our room looked out onto a very busy roundabout there was next to no road noise and it certainly didn't disturb us. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We will definately be staying here again.
PS. The shower was the best I have ever experienced in a hotel.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Trelawny An enjoyable stay
We were pleased with our two-day stay at the hotel. The welcome by the reception staff was good as was the subsequent contact with other staff in the hotel.
The room was clean and comfortable and, although located at the side of the hotel facing the road, the traffic noise was not audible. The breakfast choice was excellent and, although we enjoyed dinner on both nights, the selection was somewhat unadventurous. Notwithstanding that, the food was of a good standard.
The only slight drawback was that, as one of our nights was a Saturday, there was the inevitable wedding reception. Whilst this was not a particular problem there were several children rampaging through the dining room during dinner which somewhat detracted from the overall experience.
Overall, a delightful spot to stay, alongside the flowing waters of the mighty Thames.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by KazP Short but sweet stay!
Myself and my partner only stayed at Crowne Plaza Reading for one night, but it was a very enjoyable stay all the same.
We were spending the evening at a party just over the road at Caversham Bridge, and the hotel was originally chosen for its perfect location.Just a two minute walk back to the hotel at the end of the evening was ideal!!
The room was extremely clean, and the King size bed was huge and very comfortable. The only disappointment for me was that the pillows were a bit thin, and even two weren't enough for me. Perhaps having a choice of pillows with different firmness would be a good idea.
The breakfast the next morning was an excellent experience. It was a beautiful sunny day and we sat where we could watch the swans on the river.
We were immediately asked what hot drinks we would like, and they came straight away. The buffet breakfast had a vast choice including cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts and cooked items such as bacon, sausages, hash browns, fried and scrambled eggs, mushrooms, beans and endless toast!!
The dining area was light and airy, and the tables had plenty of space between them, so you had plenty of privacy. Staff were in attendance, but weren't at all overbearing, and we didn't feel rushed at all. We had a very pleasant and relaxing breakfast.
All in all, a perfect stay.....short and sweet!! Thank you.

Because I am also a photographer, there is a beautiful opportunity to grab great shots.

Really lovely setting right on the river. Very clean and comfortable room. Very good choice at breakfast and all staff happy and pleasant to deal with.
Only criticism was the loud disco music which could be heard in our room on the 2nd floor. We were staying overnight because our neighbours at home were having a loud party which we wanted to escape!
Other than that very happy with our stay and would certainly return.
