Visiting Aylesbury – A Guide

Aylesbury is a market town close to the gentle hills of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an hour from London by train and surrounded by rolling farmland.

Historic buildings like the 19th-century Corn Exchange surround its cobbled Market Square. The old town is home to Tudor and Georgian buildings and 13th-century St. Mary’s church. There’s also a modern shopping centre and two flourishing theatres.

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and London Luton Airport (LTN) are both around 45 minutes’ drive away.

Aylesbury: town layout

Market Square has been the town’s focal point since Anglo-Saxon times. A neo-Gothic clock tower stands here, close to a statue of local hero and English Civil War leader, John Hampden.

South of the centre is the Bucks County Museum, home to the Roald Dahl Children's' Gallery.

West of town, the Rothschild family’s Waddesdon Manor is surrounded by formal gardens and filled with works of art.

Aylesbury is surrounded by farms, so you'll find locally-sourced produce in town-centre eateries and village gastropubs all around Buckinghamshire.

Historically, the town was famous for its plump white ducks. Richard Waller maintains the tradition at Aylesbury Duck Farm, supplying tender meat to local restaurants.

Nearby Terrick is renowned for Terrick beef, and home to craft beermaker Chiltern Brewery, which also makes Terrick Truckle cheese.

Nearby Hale Valley Vineyard makes dry white wines from grapes grown on chalky Chilterns soil.

The chef recommends...

  • Roast Terrick beef and a pint of Chiltern Brewery ale at the King's Head Inn.
  • A tutored wine tasting at Waddesdon Manor's Wine Cellars, where a treasury of Bordeaux vintages celebrates the Rothschilds’ wine-making history.
  • Tender Aylesbury duck and Norfolk goose from Aylesbury Duck Farm.

Always a friendly reception fro Laura which is great at the end of the day. Hotel does need updating but only because of the decor as it is kept clean. It has an ok gym for a hotel. Coach parties do [More] use it in the summer and it can make breakfast interesting but this kept well topped up by the chef. [Less]

visited with my grandson for the weekend, was made to feel welcome from the minute I checked in. All staff spoke even if it was just to say good morning. Ate in restaurant both evenings and my [More] grandson ate free, food was very nice but not a lot of choice for vegetarians. We used the pool and my grandson had a great time. [Less]
Made up for the poor service at another of your hotels
By CCross
We originally tried to book into The Holiday Inn in High Wycombe, Handy Cross. We were told there were no rooms available but might be shortly, so we decided to wait and have dinner in your [More] restaurant. We spoke to a man at the bar who said go and take a seat and I will be with you in 30 seconds. The restaurant had about 3 tables being used, we went and sat down to wait. 3/4 times someone walked past us and did not attend to us, they would look (not even smile or acknowledge us) but simply walk past and ignore us. This went on for over 10 mins and eventually someone did come over and told us we could not sit there as it was reserved for another party in 2 hours!! The restaurant was not busy and there was no excuse for this. We eventually asked for the manager and informed him of this but he simply apologised and done nothing more, so we walked out in disgust! Upon arriving at The Holiday Inn Maidenhead, we informed the lady on reception of this and she couldn't of been more helpful or accommodating in order to ensure we enjoyed our stay with you, she was an absolute delight and has restored our faith in your chain but we will never visit High Wycombe again and we would also like to know that this complaint will be investigated accordingly, so if someone could get back to me please [Less]
Great Location. Reliable hotel.

This Holiday Inn is as you'd expect reliable and delivers a good night's sleep. Location close to motorway is excellent for travellers or to explore the area/do business nearby. [Less]
