The Holiday Inn Central is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Washington DC right on the corner of 15th street & Rhode Island Avenue, NW... just a little over 6 blocks directly north of the White House.
Our street address is: 1501 Rhode Island Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20005.
If you are driving to the DC area for the first time, here are a few tips that may be helpful:
CAPITAL BELTWAY. The city completely is encircled by the Capital Beltway (the western half is marked I-495, and the eastern half is I-95).
MAJOR ARTERIES. To drive into the city its best to use one of 3 major arteries: I-66E (if coming from the west), I-395N (from the south), or Rt-50W (from the east). Unfortunately there is no major artery coming in from the North-- make your way to RT-50. Best not to try and save time by coming in throught other smaller roads-- there are too many lights and ways to get lost.
RUSH HOUR. Unless you like sitting in traffic, avoid coming into town M-F between 7-9am-- and leaveing avoid 4-7pm.
QUADRANTS. There are 4 quadrants in DC--NE,SE, SW, & NW... so some streets with the same name-- are actually completly different streets in different areas of the city. 90% of the sights, embassies, nicer hotels, and places you'll likely be traveling are in NORTH WEST. Make sure the street signs end with a 'NW' and you are likely in the right area.
STREET ORIENTAION (blame L'Enfant). All the numbered streets (1st, 2nd, 3rd...) run North/South, all the letter streets (C, D, F, G...) run East/West, Streets with state names (New York, Rhode Island) run diagonally through the city.
RIGHT TURN ON RED. Many traffic lights have signs that prohibit this-- look out for them.
CELL PHONES- Its a $100 fione while driving and talking unless you are doing it handsfree
PARKING. Sorry-Street parking is scarce in DC --and almost always metered or restricted by day/time. Best to use the Hotel's underground garage. Its safe and convenient. There is a nominal daily fee -- $31.50 including DC taxes -- but you'll find our rate are generally much better than many other hotels, you get unlimite in/out priveledges-- and its much better that schlepping to the meters or moving your car at rush hour. Besides, you are coming to DC to enjoy yourself--right?!?
From the NORTH & Baltimore area - Take I-95 South to exit 22-B for Baltimore-Washington Parkway which is MD 295 South then turns into US Rte 50 West-New York Avenue. Turn right onto Massachusetts Avenue under overpass. Turn right onto 15th Street NW. Hotel is one block ahead at Rhode Island Avenue NW. :-)
From the SOUTH & Virginia - Take I-95 North to I-395 North to Rte 1 North. Cross 14th Street Bridge and remain in left lane. Take exit for RTE 1 North - 14th Street NW. Follow past Thomas Circle and turn left onto Rhode Island Ave NW. Hotel is one block ahead on right at corner of Rhode Island Avenue, NW :-)
From the WEST & Dulles International Airport IAD - Take Dulles Access Road East to VA Rte 267 East which becomes I-66 East. Take exit for E Street. After 1/2 mile turn left onto 17th Street NW then right onto Rhode Island Ave NW. Hotel after roundabout at corner of Rhode Island Ave NW and 15th Street NW.
From the EAST & Annapolis area - Take Route 50 West which turns into New York Avenue at the DC line. Bear right at Massachusetts Avenue, Go under overpass at 13th street. Turn right onto 15th Street NW. Hotel is one block ahead at Rhode Island Avenue NW. :-)
