I have ALWAYS stayed at Holiday Inn Ploenchit during my annual visit to Bangkok for the last 5 years. Over the years, I grew to trust the Holiday Inn brand, such that even when I travelled overseas, where possible, the first hotel I would check out and reserve would be Holiday Inn. It was a brand, a name that was synonymous with comfort, assurance, safety and hospitality.
Unfortunately, during the last trip to Bangkok 2 weeks ago, I was forced to rethink what Holiday Inn stood for. In my reservation for my 4-nights stay at the hotel, I was distinct and clear in my request for a non-smoking room. During check-in, my request for a non-smoking room was affirmed by the staff at the reception counter. I was then given a room with a shut connecting door to the next room. First night passed just fine, the next night I was awoken by slamming doors, loud raucous shouting, and increasing pungent smell of cigarette smoke. Of course, I called the front desk to clarify the situation, only to be told that I was given a room on a smoking floor.
Imagine my indignation and how livid I was as I was sensitive to cigarette smoke, hence my reservation request. True enough, I woke up with a sore throat the next day, despite hiding beneath the blanket all night. Never mind the discomfort, the heat and the sweat inducing experience under the blanket. That was how desperate I was. Because at 1am, there was no room for me to move to and all the front desk could offer was a replacement room the next day and tell the occupants of the next room to quieten down.
The replacement room offered was on the Executive Floor. But to be honest, I wouldn't care if they gave me the Presidential Suite as a replacement. I did not appreciate the sore throat on my holiday and wished I wasn't put through the discomfort. One can hardly argue that the staff at Holiday Inn Ploenchit was not well versed in English. They did check with me when I checked-in, and unless non-smoking means something else to them, I really cannot fathom why I was given a room on a smoking floor and put through a hot sweaty night and gifted with a sore throat.
While I have been loyal to the hotel in the past 5 years, this incident has seriously tested my relationship with this brand and I will consider going elsewhere when I next visit Bangkok again. I would urge all considering a stay at Holiday Inn Ploenchit and sensitive or allergic to cigarette smoke to stay clear of this hotel, unless of course, sore throats and adverse reaction to cigarette smoke is your thing.
