We were looking forward to our return to this hotel for the third time as we have always enjoyed our stay in the past.
Check in was fine and I enjoyed using the pool facilities.
Our visit was to meet up with family and friends. We decided to dine in the restaurant on the first night. We asked the waiter what kind of beers or ciders there were and he didn’t know. He said there wasn’t a drinks list. He had to ask one of the waitresses. We chose a ‘special’ of mussels for the first course. There wasn’t a water bowl for our fingers so we used our serviettes. We asked for clean ones. He said ‘yes’ but never brought them for the next course. We had to ask the waitress who brought some immediately with our second course. The waitress with red hair and a pony tail was very helpful but NOT the waiter on 18th. Although there are specials, the menu is the same each night. After our experience anyhow we decided not to dine there again.
Breakfast on 19th and 20th was difficult as the chef was hardly ever at the front to do the eggs and in particular on 20th I had chosen items for breakfast and waited 5 minutes for someone to appear. In the end, a waitress said she would bring an egg. I gave her my plate as I wanted the meal altogether so a further wait brought the full breakfast 3 or 4 minutes later. I noticed another man shouting for service a few minutes later at the breakfast area. Having said this, the chef on 21st and 22nd was excellent and very helpful. The numbers of staff in the dining room is extremely low and there is a need of leadership in the dining room. There is a need of a manager who would direct staff and check when tables needed clearing and when food needed to be replenished. On the Saturday 22nd there were a lot more waiters and waitresses but again no real direction!
For all Holiday Inn breakfasts, it would be great to have a coffee pot on the table as often the mug brought at the beginning goes cold by the juice is finished.
On 19th when we returned we had not had tea bags or shower gel replenished. It was late, we didn’t bother to contact reception. On 20th we returned to the hotel early at 3pm as we were tired due to the noise from the caravans at the back of the hotel. This was not the fault of the hotel. However our room had not been serviced. The receptionist said it had not been cleaned as I had put a ‘Do not Disturb’ card on the door. I said I had taken it down at 10.15am. She said the cleaner would have moved on by then. She told me not to put the card up the next day when I went to breakfast and it would be cleaned by the time we finished breakfast. When she rang housekeeping I heard her say she would clean the room if necessary if housekeeping couldn’t. Surely the receptionist shouldn’t have to do this? We left the room for an hour and it was cleaned. However, when we returned from breakfast the next day it had not been cleaned. We did not have a ‘Please clean ‘ card in the room. On the last morning we discovered that we only had one bath towel. We hadn’t checked the night before!
I have listed all these things because we really had been put off Holiday Inn because of this stay. My husband told the receptionist that we were not happy. We did not want recompense just a nice stay at the hotel. Thank goodness we went to Holiday Inn at Coventry and had our faith restored in Holiday inn. Please, please can these things be resolved as we like to stay in Colchester but fear staying there again!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by KJW12 Business overnight stay comfortable
Only issue at all was quality of bar food on night. Very poor fish (fish and chips meal), service also a little underwhelming.
