All was ok until the fire alarm went off.
Felt the staff were not apologetic enough for this apparent fault with the system.
It completely spoiled the experience here.

We recently stayed in a double room with breakfast. We booked online and over 4 weeks in advance which saved us at least £20 compared to our friends who just booked on the day.
The hotel is just off the A1 in Darlington and extremely easy to find.
Reception staff were lovely but seemed a bit disorganised. Room was immaculate and much roomier than I expected. The bathroom was also very clean and modern with a moulded shower unit so no grimy grout to look at. The sink was in the bedroom rather than bathroom but that was actually an advantage. The room had tea and coffee etc.
We went to the hotel bar on return from our night out. The night porter was only able to serve a few types of drinks and had to charge them to our rooms. They were quite expensive at £4 for a bottled lager.
The room was quite warm and while it did have an air conditioning unit I am not sure it was that good. It was rather noisy and no fiddling could get it to circulate cool air.
Breakfast was served from 8-11am which was perfect for those of us who like a lie in. Breakfast was a hot and cold buffet with more than you could eat. Great selection of cooked items plus cold meats, pastries, yoghurt, fruit and toast.
Overall a delightful night stopover and I would definitely choose to go there again and much prefer it to other similar hotel brands.

Probably due to the Durham Miners gala hotel booking was at a premium on 11th July 2014. However being a Platinum IHG member for years I decided to book an Executive room for 2 nights. Upon arrival I was quite surprised to find the Hotel, what I call a "HI Express in disguise", interior was very similar to many of the newer HIE's, thus I regarded the Hotel as over-priced.
The Hotel was bright & airy but the rooms had paper thin walls & ceilings (quite pleased when the herd of elephants left early in the morning in the room above!)
The cleanliness wasn't that brilliant either, I left the 3 off nail clippings by the settee as I found them on the Friday, when I departed on the Sunday.
I guess you're going to tell me that it's not classed as an Express because the rooms have a mini-bar & a safe, not worth the extra.
As someone who has spent most of his working life in Hotels I expected better.

Overall I enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn. Only down side was that i could not control the room temperature which meant it was to hot for a comfortable nights sleep

Travelled all day, worked and didnt eat since breakfast. Arrive after 10pm expecting to be able to get limited food from room service, maybe a burger or sandwich etc. No food available after 10pm.
On the plus side the recent renovation of the hotel is very apparent. It's a lovely hotel, very nicely decorated. The room was very comfortable, spacious and the bathroom of a standard highert than expected.
Air conditioning in my room didn't seem to work and was noisy. On my departure the receptionist didnt ask if everything was okay and I didn't say anything, because overall it wasn't a bad experience, but I would have mentioned if asked.

We really enjoyed our stay, staff were friendly and helpful too. Breakfast was superb, in a light airy atmosphere.
Only down side was other inconsiderate guests being noisy both late at night and as early as six in the morning on both days that we stopped.
This would not stop us from staying here again if we were in the area or passing by.
Would give it 10 out of 10

The Service from this Holiday Inn was great, they could not do enough for you, very friendly and great atmosphere. Katie on reception went that extra bit to solve any problems that we had. best nights sleep we had had in awhile, woke up relaxed and refreshed, A good breakfast set us up for the long drive ahead. Thanks again to all the staff for making our stay a pleasant one.

Hotel reception, lobby, lounge and bar area are impressive. The rest of the hotel is unimpressive and creaky.
