Part 1 – I’m actually sat writing this in my room so it’s all fresh in my mind. I don’t want to come across as a miserable old git but I’m going to struggle a bit not to; perhaps it’s because I stayed at the Holiday Inn Norwich North last week which I reckon is one of the best in the country so my expectations were high as I booked the same grade of room. Alas, all has not gone well this evening. Remembering that like most people who come to Scotland, I’ve had a very long drive so you can imagine how amused I was to spend 20 minutes blocked in the car park behind a coach which was wedged in as a result of a small car-park being badly laid out with nothing to stop people parking on bends. Eventually with the help of a colleague and three passengers the driver got the coach moving, and I got to reception. 1 person on duty and I’m No3 in the queue, behind a man who is checking in the whole coach! They put me in room 101 which did make me chuckle (See 1984 for anyone who doesn’t get the joke). The room is clean but old and worn out. The fridge cabinet dates from 1958 and the carpet is balder than me in some places. I went down to the bar and ordered a snack only to find that my Holiday Inn payment card is only accepted for rooms in this hotel so I have to pay for food separately; back to reception to give them a credit card… I stay in Holiday Inn’s up to 3 nights a week and have never had this issue before. Food arrived about 30 minutes later and it was the usual hotel fayre, ok but twice the price that it was worth. I tried to connect to the WIFI with the password given to me on a piece of paper with a 3pt font size and finally managed to input it after viewing through a microscope….However I gave up after 5 minutes trying to connect to a site and went back to my tethered mobile phone which worked perfectly (Insert noise of 1990’s 28.8 kbit/s modem and you’ll get an idea of the internet speed) . Thought I might venture to have a swim in the morning but I’ve just realised that the hotel pool is actually an adjoining leisure centre and is currently crammed full of local people – Forget the idea of a relaxing float before work tomorrow then. Oh, and to top it all the air-conditioning has packed up…the display reads U4 Maintenance. I’ve just Google‘d the code and apparently it’s a communications failure which sums up my evening here perfectly. I decided to have a nice relaxing bath before bedtime. Now bear in mind that last week, in exactly the same grade of room, I was stretched out in a spa-bath with a healthy handful of Radox and all was well in the world, the bath in my room was so small that only Warwick Davies could use it, and I suspect that even he would feel it’s a little on the snug side. So I had to settle for a shower and now I’m going to attempt to get some sleep in a warm room with a noisy road next door. Breakfast needs to be extremely good tomorrow if this place is going to win any points back. Part 2 – Last night didn’t go well. My room is actually over Reception and some drunken people we’re shouting outside in the early hours. It was very hot so no chance of closing the windows and I woke to the serenade of cars on the nearby duel carriageway. Things improved at breakfast which was excellent and even included Haggis as a welcome addition. At the checkout the receptionist asked me, “Was everything OK with your stay?” and then probably regretted doing so when I started to reel off my experience. However she did make an adjustment to my bill so it was a good recovery at the end by the hotel and a gesture that was appreciated. I won’t be able to thank them in the future though as this place has been crossed off my list of hotels.

The good, lovely hotel and rooms really comfy
The bad, I was over charged so wrote a complaint to which I was refunded but told when I arrived that their would be a complimentary bottle of wine in my room, which there was not, so kind of felt like that side of customer service wasn't kept as working in customer service myself if I say I'm going to do something then I do it!
Also we made a booking for an evening meal at reception and asked for 5.30 to which the receptionist said would be fine but then when we got down we were told that meals don't start until 6pm so kind of disappointing
Overall a comfortable stay let down by some customer service issues!
