Having stayed at many many IHG group hotels, this had to have the most non customer-centric front desk staff. My arrival at the check-in desk obviously interrupted an on-going conversation - ever so sorry about that. Only when the reservation couldn't be found easily was I asked if I was a rewards member and then there was a shuffle of paper that resulted in my check-in details having been printed off in advance. No "welcome to HI Newport" or anything in the intervening period. When I politely asked "have you been able to upgrade me in line with my IHG membership", I was just told my pre-allocated room number. When I asked again, the response was a very firm "no, if you want an upgrade, that's chargeable" Well that told me didn't it? Has the IHG upgrade policy now changed for higher membership levels? If there were no exec rooms available, fair enough but all other IHG hotels would be apologetic and offer a level of compensation, e.g. some additional points or have water etc. already in the pre-allocated room. So, no room upgrade for me then, how about the obligatory welcome points. These weren't offered, I had to ask and even that was done somewhat begrudgingly.
Off I trots to my pre-allocated room with a flea in my ear. The room itself was OK I suppose, dated without doubt and in need of a refurb but it was adequate.
Would I stay here again? Definitely not out of choice.

Die renovierten Zimmer sind modern und ausreichend komfortabel. Vor allem aber sind die Betten sehr gut und der Geräuschpegel angenehm niedrig. Keine Strassengeräusche oder Klimaanlage. Zum Frühstück könnte durchaus eine vielfältigere Auswahl anbieten.
