A central hotel right in Cardiff city centre. We had a superior room, which was very spacious with nice view of the river, though it was a little shabby in places.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Swimmum1 Great location, great service
We only stayed one night, but the staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. This hotel is in a great location. Comfortable beds and pillows, and the shower was very powerful which was a bonus as not usually expected in a hotel. We paid extra for the breakfast but worth every penny. Definitely recommend this hotel.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by flashsam Ok hotel in a very good location for a reasonable price
Having stayed in a few holiday inn's previously this hotel is definately not the best.
It's reasonable value for money (compared to other hotels in the area) but the location of this hotel is what makes me recommend it. It's right in the centre of Cardiff within walking distance to all the shops/restaurants.
I stayed in room 201 which had a really bad view of the roof of the lower part of the hotel and there were no net curtains so if anyone had come onto the roof to do any maintenance then they would have easily been able to see into my room which meant that when we went out during the day we had to keep the curtains shut so no-one could see in.
When we were in the room we also had to keep the curtains shut for the same reasons.
After breaking my ankle I was using a wheelchair at the time and the lifts in this hotel are very very small and only just managed to get in the lift with the wheelchair and my wife. Luckily there wasn't anyone else who wanted to use the lift at the same time.
The wheelchair I had was as small as it could be but for a permanently disabled person who might have a bigger wheelchair the lifts could be a problem.
The room got very hot during the day but got too cold with the windows open. The air conditiioning system only seemed to do heating and every time I changed the settings to make it cooler a few minutes later it had reset itself back to 20 degrees and started heating the room again.
The double bed in the room was also really small so any couple of a larger size might struggle.
The breakfast for £7.50 was amazing. Very nice eggs (fried but you can order poached or omelettes), sausages, beans, mushrooms, toast (nice bread as well as baguettes) and also a lovely pancake machine which makes fresh pancakes somehow at the press of a button.
(Note - this was exactly the same breakfast as I had in the Hull hotel but in Hull it cost £12.95!)

1. We had room service on Friday. While my meal was fine my wife's chicken burger was not.
2. The pillows labelled as 'soft' were not particularly so.
3. Advertising with a card at the breakfast table about 'Full English' breakfast in one of your hotels in Wales is very insensitive.
I realise that you don't have many hotels in Wales and may not want to produce 'Full Welsh' breakfast cards, but why not advertise your 'Cooked' breakfasts. You do have bilingual signs in the bathrooms and can't understand you doing this with the breakfasts.
4. Is it not time that HI offered free wifi to guests?
5.Wash basin taps - even though there is one spout which gives a sort of 'mixer' tap, it's not really a proper mixer tap is it.
We visit this hotel several times a year and apart from these 'gripes', we enjoy staying here and the staff are very friendly and efficient.

This hotel is ideal for Cardiff City Centre, We found it very comfortable, staff were very friendly and attentive. During our stay there was a party and a wedding, however we were still able to relax in the bar area without any disruption.

we enjoyed our weekend very much, everyone of the staff very friendly.Very central,Would stay there again.
The only downside was the wedding reception on the Saturday night could not get to sleep because of the beat of the disco although it did stop dead on twelve.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gratefulcustomer Outstanding service
We stayed at the Cardiff City hotel last weekend and I really must commend an example of outstanding service. We checked in on Friday and all was well. However, just as we were leaving the hotel to go to a concert at the arena on Saturday evening, a group of loud young men, probably at a wedding or stag party, got out of the lift on our floor, swearing and talking about how much drink they had in their rooms. This concerned us as their rooms were next to and opposite ours. We mentioned it to the duty manager as we were going out. He checked the rooming list and said there was a room on the 6th floor that was not in use and he would block it for our use in case we had a problem. He would brief the duty manager taking over from him and we should talk to him when we came back. It seemed he had had something of a run-in with this group already and was expecting some further problems. When we got back from the concert, we spoke to the new duty manager who knew exactly what we were talking about. He immediately gave us a key card for the room on the 6th floor and told us just to take what we needed for the night and to leave our bags etc in our original room. We had a good night's sleep and returned to our original room for a shower etc in the morning.
We saw the duty manager again in the morning and once again, he was most helpful. It really seems that both duty managers, despite the pressures of a busy and sometimes rowdy Saturday night, are genuinely concerned that their guests are happy and comfortable. As a result we had an uninterrupted night's sleep and a very pleasant stay. Their efforts deserve acknowledgement and we are very grateful to them.

Staff could not do enough for you from reception staff arranging late check out to getting my drink delivered to my table in the bar. Excellent.

Superb position in Cardiff, right opposite the ferry for the bay,the castle and Bute park. No.6 bus to the Bay just on the corner. Close to the centre. We were able to walk to St. David's Hall for the opera.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by BD50 No free internet
I stayed here for 5 nights and found the staff very helpful and polite in all areas reception, cleaning and resturant. The room was comfortable and very clean. There was only one disappointing aspect of my stay which was the extortionate price for the internet service. I stayed here on business and had to go out every evening to obtain free internet access which is abundant just a fwew yards away in many of the bars and resturants in Cardiff.
The lack of free internet access would prevent me staying at this hotel in the future if on business.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by KCPOBE Cardiff - excellent hotel to stay
Stayed for one night prior to delivering a training course to some teachers in Cardiff. Lovely hotel - good atmosphere. The food was good - and they had a special offer which made the evening meal really good value for money.
The only downside was the next morning when I was driving to the training venue - not knowing Cardiff I was in the wrong lane at a junction so had to get across into another lane - a kind driver let me in but a police siren soon stopped me in my tracks and I received a ticking off from the law! Possibly because I didn't know Cardiff or the road layouts etc. this particular policeman let me go on my way with just a word of warning!!! Hardly the fault of the hotel though!!!!!!!!!
:-))

Not particularly happy with my experience.
The first room allocated was right at the front, about the same size as a rabbit hutch with nowhere comfortable to sit. It was also so noisy I may have well been sleeping in the street!
I asked to be moved and I was however I was still a little disappointed by the room.
Finally, why oh why oh why do you advertise individually controlled air conditioning when you cannot cool the room down in winter as you can only have heat!

Booked for one night evening meal and breakfast. with one guest for evening meal whom was celebrating his 30th birthday, The staff went out of their way to make it special ,putting balloons, banners etc round our table plus lighting candles for a cake that we had bought in with us,
All the staff were very friendly,
Granted that our room was very small and only had one hard back chair put it was not the end of the world.
Thank you everyone for making our stay so enjoyable

Possibly the smallest room I've ever stayed in....not so much a room, more and oversized box. Badly in need of a refurb too!
Won't be staying there again.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Blodyn One night stay
Booked through late rooms asked for a twin room and also paid for a superior room in a quiet location of hotel - got a twin and quiet room but did not think the room was a superior room - normally have two double beds in superior rooms and the quilts in the beds hardly covered them - thank goodness the room was hot otherwise we would have been freezing. The breakfast was good The receptionist on arrival was a bit abrupt but the one when we were leaving was very pleasant. Paying eight pounds to park overnight was excessive as we were only at the hotel from six thirty in the evening until eight am the following morning.

Good experience. Main problem was a bedside light which rationed itself to 15 minute bursts, but staff were prepared to deal with it the same evening. Overall a good stay.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by RuabonRed Noisy Neighbours
Our stay was ruined by noisy guests in the adjoining room; a group of young lads playing drinking games by the sounds of it.
This was an issue to us as we were staying in a family room with a young child. It was an otherwise quiet Sunday night, so it couldn't be blamed on us picking a rugby weekend.
We informed reception three times. If any action was taken it was ineffective and we received no feedback. We gave up in the end.
Otherwise it is a lovely hotel in a central location; we were I guess unlucky, but it was disappointing not to have the issue resolved, or even reported back on. The poor rating is therefore not for the hotel itself, but for the customer service.

Not bad for a city centre hotel. Bathrooms are tiny and in need of renovation. Car park is expensive considering that even a Crowne Plaza gives Platinum members free parking in the rest of Europe. Breakfast is usually semi warm and overcooked. Shame that Callaghans is closed.
