Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Little disappointed Stayed at the HI Cardiff Central late September early October for 5 nights. Good points: Right next to Millennium Stadium, City Centre and right opposite the Castle. Welcome good (Reine??) and as was staying a long time had a large family room to myself which was all ready on arrival. Top floor has good views over western city. Parking free for Platinum level club members - bonus!!! Bad points Shower was pitiful. I complained twice and requested if a note could be provided if nothing could be done but no message was left. Saw Manager on third time and he arranged for another room but as this was much smaller and at front of hotel was not really suitable. Disappointed he did not know the shower in this room was poor as there was a programme of improvements going on but this room was not included! Bath also took an age to fill (20mins) which will be related to poor shower. Shower curtain only had one layer so wrapped to one when showering - also smelled musty. Room was at side not rear as requested in booking but possibly because of having a family room. Apart from the shower a good stay and it only rained on the last day!!! October 17, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Excellant Staff Very helpful staff, bed and pillows not comfortable, room very cold and noisy due to emergency service sirens all night.. bathroom tiny ( room 508). Hotel location fantastic close to all amenities. October 17, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Restaurant manager feedback My wife and I had an good overall experiance from our overnight night stay in you cardif hotel. The staff in the main had demonstrated excellant behaviours towards us and other guests staying at the same time. One blip from our point of view was the distant abrupt approach from your restaurant manager when we went for breakfast. Despite us saying good morning to him twice we were ignored because he was focussed on being (looking) efficient in his work. No problem with other restuarant staff attitudes, getting a table or being served in good time. We put it down to lack of attention at the time by the manager but is something for you to be aware of. Also I found the bed uncomfortable with a distinct slope into the middle. This is usualy found to be an issue with older mattresses I find. Other than what is mentioned above thank you for a pleasant stay. October 16, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Service but the television choice is poor I would give this hotel a 5 but for the TV choices. The staff are always really helpful, the breakfast is good and the rooms clean with air conditioning that works. But the TV, BBC1,2 and ITV1 in HD repeated as channels 7, 8 and 9 in non HD, several that just don't work Pick, Sky1, and worst of all channel 6 as a hotel info channel, but no BBC4 or any of the +1 channels.. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great hotel with excellent service Great hotel in a fantastic location. Couldn't fault the service - reception staff were friendly as were the bar and restaurant staff. Room was excellent - spacious and clean. One slight disappointment was the wifi. Fortunately I am entitled to free wifi through my priority club status., However, this is pretty useless if the speed of the 'free' service is restricted so much so that web pages do not load and emails do not download. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not good enough The room was poorly lit and cold until a plug-in heater was brought to us. Not enough draw space for two people for two nights. Much banging of service door alongside our room at night. Dinner in restaurant 1/10/2013 was unacceptable. Pie-crust hard and brittle. Peas like bullets. Mashed potato oddly grey. My wife ordered chocolate brownie and I ordered a cup of coffee. They appeared on the same plate. On request, the waiter produced a saucer and placed the coffee on it. The brownie was very stale and inedible. The cost was struck off our bill. I had ordered a large glass of Chardonnay and was shocked to be charged £7.95 for 250 ml of what was surely no more than a house white. There was a survey form on the table and I wrote some of the above on it. No attempt was made to speak to us before we left the hotel on 3/10/2013. and there has been no communication in the four days since then. So what happened to the survey? October 6, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Overall - But Stag Do Issues! Great Location, Nice and Clean, Well Kept, Polite Staff .. But.. We were very displeased to find that as two women travelling alone we had been sandwiched between the various rooms of a Stag Do after specifically requesting in our booking to be placed on a quiet floor. They had music on loud which was audible from our room before they left for their night out, they then stomped in at 3:45 screaming, shouting, slamming doors and being generally unpleasant for over half an hour. We felt uncomfortable and unsafe asking them to be quiet as they were clearly drunk and rowdy, so the next day we informed the desk staff about our broken night's sleep. They kindly offered to move us to another room, with our busy day of exploring we mentioned that we would be unable to pack up all our belongings to do this. So they offered to speak to the men in question to ask them to respect the other users of the Hotel. We had no issues the next night, but were very annoyed that no common sense had been used when these men checked in and were placed on the same floor and then us arriving later were placed smack bang in the middle of them. Even if we had just been put at the end of the floor or on another floor, this would have dealt with the noise issue. Additionally, we were very surprised to find that unlike most Holiday Inns around the country, this one did not have free Wi-Fi. We would possibly go back as long as we could be promised a quiet room as everything else was lovely! October 2, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by nice hotel in a good location This is a nice hotel in a good city centre location with ample parking. The room was very comfortable and the breakfast was excellent but it is a pity that unlike some other Holiday Inn hotels and the majority of hotels today, the Wi-Fi internet is not complimentary and is charged @ £5/hour (1 hour from log on and not 1 hour of use over your stay ). I would recommend this hotel for the leisure traveller but not for a business stay. October 2, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Big service improvement!!! I've stayed here loads of times an always found it pretty average (apart from the location which is great!!). My last stay though (23/9/13) was in a different league!! The welcome was warm, friendly and certainly a cut above the usual. As a Platinum card holder I got a complimenatary upgrade which hardly ever happened at this H.I. The service of the front desk staff was exemplorary, they really went the extra mile and it made a difference. This last stay has reinstilled my faith in the H.I. Cardiff, they seem like they have really 'got' the importance of customer service..........looking forward to my next stay!!! September 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great city break visiting friends Hotel is in the perfect position in Castle Street for the city centre and the historic castle. First room allocated had an air conditioning unit outside, as a light sleeper this could have spoilt the stay, however, a quick call to reception and we were relocated a great room within 5 minutes. Great service. I would recommend The Holiday Inn Cardiff City Centre for a city break or a trip to watch the rugby. September 26, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent break From arrival on a Friday afternoon until departure on Monday morning an excellent experience. Relaxing lounge and bar area. Prime location for the centre and castle grounds. Staff very friendly and accommodation comfortable. September 26, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by A bit messy The floors are a bit messy and unsightly. I think you need to stop room service as people a spilling stuff. Otherwise the staff are all right. September 24, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great location for sportsfans We often visit Cardiff for sporting events (cricket & rugby) and this hotel is ideally located for both. It is also only a short stroll to most of the city's shops, bars and restaurants. If you want to visit the Bay area, then the waterbus stop is just a few minutes walk. The hotel itself has good facilities - although the bathroom in our Superior Room was a little cramped and the towels could be bigger. Excellent breakfast both in terms of choice and quality. September 20, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Value for money I thought Holiday Inn Express was the Budget branch of this chain. The website led us to believe that breakfast was included, as it always has been at HI Express, but not so. I expected free WiFi - other chains, and independents, offer this now, and even one of the budget chains offers half an hour free. I assume that most guests are business travellers on expenses, and their employers are covering the cost. September 20, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Weekend in Cardiff Courteous, friendly staff. Clean room. Quiet. Good room temperature. Able to open the window to get fresh air. Close to Cardiff castle, Millenium stadium and center. So many places to eat at that we did not eat at the motel. No complaints. September 11, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Short stay I stayed with a collegue for 1 night to attend a seminar, and found the hotel easy to find, close to all local amenities (Just short walking distance), the greeting upon arrival was excellent and reception were very friendly and helpful. the room was quiet and comfortable and breakfast in the morning very good. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. September 11, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by breakfast Julian and Tomas provided excellent service at breakfast September 6, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Position This hotel has been modernised and the rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable and the equipment adequate. It is positioned behind the Millenium Stadium by the side of the River Taff and opposite Bute Park. The station and shops are within a few minutes walk and the plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from nearby. There is parking available at a cost of £8 per night. This is ideal for a weekend break which can include visiting the castle, a trip on the river to Cardiff Bay and excellent shopping. September 6, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable room but prefer a shower which you can lift down a small point second time we have stayed at this hotel had a great weekend. Found everything was good, however was a bit confused as last tome we stayed breakfast was in with the price but not this time which was surprising. September 5, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very comfortable bed This was my first experience of a Holiday Inn although I have stayed at Holiday Inn Express a few times. I was warmly welcomed by reception staff on arrival and there was no waiting about for room keys. My room was large, warm and spacious, and the bed very comfortable. The air conditioning worked properly, the bathroom was spotlessly clean and toiletries supplied were ideal. There was no problem with the other guests apart from being woken up at about 3.15a.m. by a child running around in the room above mine, but that wasn't a fault with the hotel. Although the hotel is on a very busy road, the outside noise doesn't penetrate, so sleep isn't disturbed by traffic. I was attending an event at Cardiff Castle and this hotel is directly opposite, so perfectly placed and within easy walking distance. This hotel is perfectly situated for shopping, entertainment, and public transport, with buses passing the door and the railway station a very short walk away. Altogether my stay was excellent and I would recommend this hotel to anyone. September 4, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointing Disappointing stay this time around. Always enjoyed it in the past, as a regular customer. Not told or asked about breakfast when checked in. Booked 3 weeks in advance and specifically asked not to have an adjoining room, and was let down obviously and could hear neighbours clear as day. At one stage they tried our door to see if they could get in. My wife didn't want to change because it was late and was too much upheaval. Bathroom was dated and poor lighting, no full length mirror in the room and the hairdryer was broken. Shame really. September 2, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable, relaxing stay It only took a couple of minutes to walk to the main area of Cardiff, shops, bars and restaurants. Located next to the Millennium Stadium and very close to Cardiff castle, staff on the main reception very polite and helpful. Breakfast well recommended and again the staff are very polite. Room very comfortable and had a good nights sleep. I would recommend this hotel to anyone August 29, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Breakfast Our 2 night stay was very good, staff polite, friendly and helpfull.. Room was a surprise , not what we expected, in need of redecoration and the base of the bed looked like it had had water damage , and was shabby. Bathroom needed regrouting and the toilet was to close to the bath.. Breakfast was excellent, great choice of food.. August 28, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Welcoming Appreciated the complimentary reception free coffee facility. Really friendly and informative staff. Great location. Could do with a pool. Kids meals could include more vegetables. Need to resolve the internet access and provider but service was provided. Family room was good. Remote control batteries should be on the check list for full working order. August 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent hotel - room with a view This is a great hotel right in the centre of Cardiff opposite the castle. I have stayed here many times over the last 5 years and would highly recommend it for it's great location and good views over the rugby stadium and castle. August 27, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great porridge - and family-friendly Breakfast particularly good - great porridge! Rooms are clean and practical. Choose one at the back for a quieter stay - overlooking the old Cardiff Arms Park. I was on business in Cardiff this week I've stayed here before with my family - their family rates are particularly good value and the staff are good with youngsters. August 27, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Average stay A well placed hotel within the city. Room price is good for what you get though the rooms are a little on the small side. Iof you get a view of the castle, you get the road noise, but the other option is the millennium stadium which ain't that pretty to be honest. August 26, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great service, great location Stayed at the Holiday inn Cardiff City Centre, had a great time, Cardiff is a great city and this hotel is in a great location to explore Cardiff and the surrounding area, stayed 4 nights with our two grandsons (aged 5 and 3), staff were great, nothing was too much trouble, breakfast was excellent and overall great value for money. Would definitely stay at this hotel again and highly recommend it. August 26, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Professional Staff Our stay in the hotel was very enjoyable and the Staff were friendly and helpful-nothing was too much trouble for them. Excellent situation with parking available, food of good quality and quantity, rooms clean and comfortable an excellent stay. August 26, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by a little disappointed i am a platinum level ihg rewards member so try to book with the group whenever i can for work and leisure (i probably stay in hotels anywhere between 5 to 10 nights per month). cardiff holiday inn on the good side excellent breakfast, bar and staff within both ( i was late for my breakfast on my second day but the staff sorted me out and i was able to enjoy my breakfast). however on the minus. i was never offered any upgrade on my room and when i got to my room it was very cramped, there was no safe and no fridge (i have medication which i need to keep refrigerated so had to use my cool box. the bathroom was tiny. as i said the room was cramped and there was not even a small bottle of water within the room.. my problem is i am staying in cardiff in october for 2 weeks so do i stick with my brand loyalty or do i go to another hotel where i know i get the things i want (safe, fridge, big room) currently i am not sure which way to jump August 26, 2013
