Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Bad management and front desk staff We requested early check in and were put on a waiting list. When we noticed customers being given their rooms one hour before the check in time of 3:00 I got in line again and was told our room was still not available. I complained to a manager and he had a quick meeting with the front desk staff in the back office. Staff then informed me that I could get my room but my credit card had declined. He suggested I get out of line and call my credit card company. I called my credit card company and was told my card had not declined and that there was no charge attempt shown. I got back in line for the third time and the same card was approved and I got my room at close to 3:00. All staff and the manager that I dealt with were condescending and unfriendly. I felt they falsely declined my card just to "show me" for complaining. I won't return. I don't like paying for rude customer service. July 8, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Convenient location, comfortable room, mediocre break buffet. We stayed 4 nights at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza. Our room was on the 16th floor had 2 queen beds. The room had recently been renovated and was very nice. The mattresses were very comfortable and the room was quiet. The hotel was very conveniently located for getting around on the CTA. To get to a brown line station, you just walked through the Merchandise Mart. It was also fairly easy to walk to a number of restaurants in the River North area and to destinations in the Loop. The hotel's swimming pool was great, and we also liked the fitness center. The bar on the reception level (15th floor) had a great view of the city and was a comfortable place to enjoy a drink at the end of the day. I ordered breakfast off the menu the first morning I was there and found the oatmeal to be really good. We had the breakfast buffet our last morning there and found it to be very mediocre, especially for the price (around $22). The potatoes were not warm, the bread for toast was low quality, although the fruit was nice. We would recommend that you order off the menu or go somewhere else for breakfast. There are lots of nice places nearby. July 8, 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great service and perfect location We stayed here while we were taking part in the L.A.T.E. Ride bicycle tour through the city of Chicago. Since the ride starts at 1am, we were looking for a location that would accommodate our bikes and give us a central location to relax before and after the ride. The Holiday Inn more than accomplished that for us. A special shout out goes to Johnny the doorman who, from our initial interaction checking in at 4 pm until his long shift ended at 6 am, helped us manage all of our bikes and luggage. He even personally brought us coffee to our room to help wake us up before we left for the ride at midnight. In fact, all the staff was extraordinarily helpful. I highly recommend this property. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 Great View. The room was clean, the staff was good and all that. The view was great and a large influence to return, but I understand a building is going up in front of you, too bad this will make that view worthless. I would have liked a refrigerator in my room to store food and alcohol, as we are common working folk this would have helped to offset costs. The room was expensive at regular rates. I would not have stayed there had we not gotten a group discount from our event. Our guests were not able to get this discount so we know how much it would have cost. July 4, 2013

A cozy Pub with this view, good treatment, good drinks, good food and good atmosphere to. Is here where I stay when going to Chicago. Holiday Inn standards that I enjoy for about 40 years. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great location and great service The Chicago Mart Plaza Holiday Inn is a beautiful building, inside and out. It has a fantastic location and was easily accessible to all sites that we wished to go to in Chicago. The Concierge was extremely helpful and a valuable source of information. We had a problem the first night that we were there - our air conditioner did not work for more that 10 minutes at a time. The next day we contacted the front desk and the HVAC individual, was there and made a temporary fix, so we were able to enjoy the remainder of our stay. Access to parking is a real problem. Was upgraded to a corner suite facing the rivers, remarkable view of the city. Room was comfortable and clean. Didn't spend much time in the hotel other than sleeping. The hotel is in a great location and it is easy to walk to a lot of great places but the hotel is out of the main tourist area. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable bed! I usually have a difficult time GETTING to sleep, then STAYING asleep (even @ home). However, your bed comfort was awesome! I was able to get to sleep quickly, and didn't "come to" until I heard my son moving around the room. Best night's sleep I've ever had, actually. Thank you. The flimsy coffee-maker was a bit disappointing - you really need a better-quality device in the rooms. June 28, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect accommodations for the business traveler and tourist The decor is cosmopolitan, understated frosted glass and chrome, an elegant homage to the city's skyscrapers. The concierge made excellent suggestions. The in-room Internet connection helped with work, the gym and pool were clean and well-equipped. If the hotel has a weakness, it's soggy food. Every meal I arrived soggy: the morning English muffin, the sauteed vegetables, even the wonton chips with dessert. June 27, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Smokers in a non-smoking room adjacent to mine Half of the time I spent in this property I had issues and complained formally 3 times to the staff on duty, including on one occasion the duty manager. My room (#1605) had an adjoining room and shared a common door with that room. If it were to be a family staying together this door would typically be left open and connect the two rooms. But when occupied by a single individual it would be locked. The occupants of room #1604 were smoking heavily in their rooms and the smoke would fill my room through the small gap at the base and corner of the door/door frame. I complained 3 times before the issue had to be resolved and I was moved to another room. On one occasion, the duty manager promised to send someone by 9pm to come with a blower and air-freshener because the smoke was so heavy I was choking. I stayed up till 1am that day and no one came. The next day no one even apologized for this. What baffled me was that room #1604 was also non-smoking according to the front desk staff and therefore no one should be smoking in-there. I enjoy staying at Holiday Inn and IHG properties worldwide and this experience is a low ebb to what I consider a long standing relationship. June 25, 2013

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Wedding Weekend If you drive and park your car, beware the enterance to the hotel is hidden and the lack of signs directing you to the mystery enterance are lacking. The bathroom needs some seriously updates. Everything was low - toilet, sink/counter top and shower head. I don't think of our family as being extremely tall either. Conserving the planet tags hanging in the bathroom are for appearance sake only. Even though we hung our towels up, they were replaced each day. Some of the rooms were directly over the reception area. The music was so loud there was no way anyone could sleep until the event was over. The cocktail and reception areas were freezing! For the price we paid, we have stayed in other Chicago hotels that were drastically better and included a great breakfast buffet too. June 18, 2013

Had a breakfast at the hotel but immediately presented with invoice and plates were taken away though breakfast was not finished. Felt bit disappointing. On check out, when I asked to change the billing address to office address I was told that they cant do it as it will mean taking away priority points and can only be done when I update my priority club profile. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Good rooms, shame about the service On the plus side, my room was large and airy and had wonderful views of the Chicago skyline. My room was also quiet at night and sleeping was not a problem. The location of the hotel is convenient for exploring downtown and the discounted rate I received (I was attending a conference) was good value. On the down-side, as a European who nevertheless stays at around 6 American hotels a year, I look forward to the friendly and attentive service guests can usually expect at American hotels. I didn't find that here. Too often service was neglectful or downright unfriendly. A few examples, I went to breakfast but after 15 mins no-one had come near my table (I'd waited to be seated, then gone to the buffet having been given a table). Giving up hope, I then sought the attention of a waitress and asked for coffee. I got a visibly irritated 'OK' in response, without her looking at me, but then I never received any coffee and the waitress (or anyone else) never came near me again. I wanted some ketchup but couldn't get that either. In the end I had to chase another member of staff for a bill. I had other experiences at the restaurant (breakfast was included in the price of room) and they weren't as bad but certainly weren't good either - staff seem to think it's OK to ignore you or answer without looking at or fully acknowledging you. When I asked one lady for something and she didn't respond, I assumed it was best to try someone else. In the end, both brought me what I was after (some sauce) but the woman I'd asked first let me know I shouldn't have asked the 2nd person! If she'd given me any confidence she intended to serve me I wouldn't have wasted my own time asking the 2nd person! The front desk was also very variable. When my WiFi stopped working I called down and was given a new password, but the woman on the phone didn't bother to hide her impatience. I had a similar experience when I asked if I could extend my check-out time by an hour or two (not possible, and she seemed annoyed to be asked). When I checked out the lady at the desk barely looked at me the whole time, and I left without getting a smile. Why is that? If I'm particularly unlikeable then staff at other American hotels certainly seem to hide their unfriendliness without a problem! And this isn't a cheap hotel. Some of the staff at the hotel were certainly pleasant - the man who checked me in, the concierge, the maid who cleaned my room. But too many of them (definitely the restaurant, and some at the front desk) seem to bring a bad attitude to work, have no customer service ethic, and badly need some refresher training. And because of that I wouldn't go back to this hotel - there are some many good hotels in Chicago to choose from (I've had a better experience at 3 others), why go where your going to encounter attitude while handing over your cash? Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wedding Weekend Room layout was very spacious even though we were not in a suite. I like that the bathroom and closet were around the corner from the "bedroom". Room was clean. Food was good especially at the wedding. The only glitch which was resolved a few hours later was the cost of the parking. The people driving to the wedding were given a reduced parking rate but as we were staying in the hotel for the weekend, we were not initially given the reduced rate. Someone finally agreed to give us the reduced rate; smart idea! June 12, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by poor service and no recognition I was not recognized as a platinum member and was not given privileges other non-members were given. reception desk staff were rude and said that the Holiday stopped serving breakfast and had no after-hours lounge for platinum members. I discovered later that there was a buffet breakfast but no one told me about it. I would not recommend this property. June 12, 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Conference Stay in the Windy City I was staying at this hotel so I could attend a conference which was being held in the hotel. At first I was a little confused by the hotel because the location that you are dropped off at is not the actual area where the registration desk is located. Once I found the desk the check in experience was good. I got to my room and found that my reservation for a King bed with a view was not what I had received. I went back down and my room was promptly changed to a wonderful King bed with a wonderful view. The rooms are large and very nice. The beds are very comfortable. The staff was always very willing to help with any questions I had and went out of their way to make sure things were right. The only two points that weren't so great for me was the location of the hotel to other areas like the Magnificient Mile and Navy Pier and the fact that it was hard to get a taxi to take me back to the airport. Neither of these points were the hotels fault. The doorman worked very hard to get me a cab to the airport but the cab drivers kept telling him that they were off duty when he told them where I wanted to go. Of course they could take a local passenger. The food was excellent in the hotel and the lounge has a wonderful view of the river so don't miss it! June 10, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great service - beautiful views The service was wonderful during my 3 day stay for convention. I enjoyed the beautiful views from the bar, while enjoying dinner 2 nights. The food was fabulous. The only problem, was that the air conditioning in my room was very loud - but by the time I got back to my room after long days - I was too tired to call about it.
