Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent staff I stay in Holiday Inn hotels 5 nights a week and this is by far the most comfortable. The young man on reception (who's name I tried so hard to remember, but ultimately didn't) was fantastic. Despite being a platinum member I hadn't been assigned an executive suite, this was rectified immediately. I was also quite early for checking in and he did his upmost to ensure I got a room within mere seconds. Once assigned a room I had an issue with my key which was also dealt with swiftly allowing me to carry on with my plans for the day. I really appreciated the effort he went to and I shall be staying here more often due to this. April 23, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Attractive Hotel in convenient and good location. I stayed at the Hotel over Easter with my husband and we very much enjoyed the break. We had an Executive Room which was large and attractive, very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the excellent breakfast and dined in the Restaurant each night which had a good Menu and Specials Board. The hotel staff were very helpful, friendly and efficient. The hotel is set in attractive grounds and is well situated for visiting Colchester and the Castle, and also Colchester Zoo. April 17, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not what we expected My wife and I chose this hotel because of its convenient location for visiting friends. I was not welcomed as a (Platinum) rewards member, instead it was just bored "Drink or Points" question and we did not know whether or not we'd be given a room upgrade. We were not given Wi-Fi instructions or codes and had to ring reception for a code, it was further not explained that it was one code per device and valid for one day only, so we had to ring again for another code for the second device and then repeat the exercise the following afternoon for that day's codes. Upon entering the room we found that the rubbish bin was full and had obviously not been emptied by the cleaning staff - we notified reception straight away and someone came within a few minutes to take it away. It was only later when we were getting changed to go out that we realised the carpet had not been vacuumed very well either. The bathroom looked tired but everything worked and the shower was a powerful one. The external door handle was loose and every time we pulled the door to close it upon leaving the room the handle came off in our hands. This was brought to the attention of the staff but it was not fixed during our 2-night stay. Breakfast was a shambles on both days. There were not enough staff to clear the tables so every table was littered with uncleared breakfast remains. We were told there was a coach party in but frankly that excuse doesn't wash because every manager should know that everyone on a coach-tour breakfasts at the same time in order to meet their departure time - it is not rocket science to work out more staff are needed at busy times! The breakfast food was pre-cooked and kept warm on 'hot' plates - unfortunately the hot plates were incorrectly termed and should have been called lukewarm plates as the food was not hot enough to enjoy. The fresh fruit selection was abysmal. Overall we thought the breakfast was very poor fare and nowhere near worth the price. On the plus side. most of the staff were friendly and smiley and no doubt were doing their best in a bad situation. Whoever manages this hotel needs to get their act together much better to bring the hotel up to the level we expect of an IHG hotel. April 17, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Avoid Holiday Inn Colchester Unhappy staff - unmanned reception desk - uncomfortable - poor nights sleep and terrible breakfast - avoid this hotel! Learn from the Holiday Inn Solstice Park, where the staff are positive and welcoming and one can have a good nights sleep and an enjoyable breakfast! This must be a 'best practice' hotel and it is a pity that the Holiday Inn Colchester is so lacking in comparison. April 16, 2015

The staff were incredibly friendly and surprisingly there were various meat-free options, other than just pizza. My only issue was the bathroom was a bit smelly - shame as otherwise great stay. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Very Helpful Manager when we arrived our room had been double booked - not the hotels fault! We were offered an alternative room which had plumbing problems. We also found the fresh fruit selection and selection of yogurts poor for Breakfast.The dining area also needed a good clean. However the Manager was very helpful and did his best to improve things where he was able, as it was a Bank Holiday weekend and no maintenance available. April 12, 2015

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good food but the service is lacking Firstly the room, typical of any other holiday inn I've stayed in, nice and clean with just enough space, all we needed really. The kids sofa bed was poor though and I was glad that I didn't have to sleep in it as you could feel every one of the springs through the mattress. Having made a booking for the restaurant for both evenings we went down for our meal. However on both occasions our booking was not on the system and this seemed to cause a great deal of confusion for the restaurant manager who then began messing about with his Google docs on the computer for 5 minutes even though there were clearly plenty of tables free. Once we were finally taken to our table it took 20 minutes for them to come and take our order which they openly admitted to having forgotten about our table despite there being only 4 tables in use at this time. They probably forgot about us because they were too busy chatting with the chefs over the pass. The food itself was good and tasty but again it took an inordinate amount of time to receive each course, in total a meal that should have taken a little over an hour took almost two and a half. This was in stark contrast to the very good service offered by the staff in the pool. Overall the hotel is good it was just let down by very poor service in the restaurant. April 11, 2015
