Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by EMT1990 friendly staff but that is about it
We have stayed at this hotel several times. I am a priority club member but I see my stay is not on my account. I assume the hotel staff did not use my priority club card though I gave it to them. We made reservations for two rooms to be near each other. Our daughter's family was in one room; we were in the other. They arrived first and their room was on the fourth floor. When we arrived we were told that our room had been moved to the 6th floor. When I questioned this the staff told me they had to move me and no reason was given. When I asked to be moved back to the floor near my daughter I was told there was nothing available. Our room smelled musty. The window was cracked and there was no screen on it. The temperature could not be regulated. It went from hot to cold. The elevator was extremelyslow. The food is dismal and expensive for the quality. Our neighbors were very loud and wandered around the hallways with open whisky bottles throughout the night.
The hotel has been in the process of remodeling for at least a year and I see no changes. We stay in Des Moines regularly and do not stay at this hotel unless nothing else is available. The only positives about this hotel is the staff is friendly and helpful and it is close to Mercy hospital.
As a priority member I do expect better.

After reading previous reviews, I was a little concerned about staying at this property as the reviews were not satisfactory.
When we arrived, our room was ready and it was immaculate. The bed was comfortable and furnishings were very nice.
We were facing the highway and also the elevator was across from our room. Neither of these factors detracted from our sleep.
The staff went out of their way to make sure everyones needs were attended to. The shuttle was a plus for transporting to and from the arena.
It was a convenient location to the arena.
I am glad we stayed there and would do so again if we were in that area.
Thanks for making our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

I have stayed in many hotels and holiday inns over the years. This was the most accommodating and friendly hotel ever.
We were there for the NCAA wrestling tournament. I have been to at least 20 in the past years. This was the first hotel that ever worked with the tournament schedule.
The staff worked multiple shifts and worked with little if any sleep.
They never complained and were always there when needed.
Food was excellent!

Attended the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. With the amount of traffic the hotel endured I thought they did a great job hosting us. The hospitality was EXCELLENT and the beds were real comfy.
THANK YOU!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Krh123 Can't follow reservation requests and terrible food/cocktails
I requested a room away from the interstate and elevators. Initially, that is not where I was placed! I had to get that changed after listening to what was loud noise at still approx. 7:00 p.m. from the interstate. I had to repack my bags and move across the hall. In the new room, the lightbulb was out in one of the lamps, and the heat wasn't turned on as I was told it would be. I never got the microwave or frig that I requested and the food and cocktail in the lounge was terrible, i.e., salmon scorched and rice dry and overcooked, martini TOO strong. I barely touched any of it. Never again...

This was a last minute trip to Des Moines and the Holiday Inn was a great choice. The complimentary shuttle to Downtown Des Moines was great, especially since we went there during St. Patrick's day weekend and it was a busy weekend downtown The room service was delicious and my husband loved the wings. The view of Downtown was beautiful. We always stay at a hotel with a pool and the Holiday Inn's pool was quite enjoyable. The only regret we had was that we couldn't stay longer, but are excited to come back and stay! Highly recommended.

I was a returning customer. Previous stays were not great, but fair. The location is near to convention center, shuttle service and free parking. However, in my last stay I was accommodated in a very old room. One of the beds had dirty blankets and hair; the toilet’s lid was left open, as well as the bathroom door, so that the entire room smelled to toilet. The toilet was clean, but it smelled. It happened every day regardless of my notes to keep it close. I stayed in a non-smoking room, but a strong smell to cigarette was always coming thought the air condition system; it was similar to having someone smoking in the bathroom. I complained several times and was told there was nothing they could do about it, but spreading my room with air-freshener. Accommodation was also poor; I’m an adult traveling alone for business and was accommodated among several college students, so they were noisily and I couldn’t sleep straight one single night. I used to get free breakfast for being Priority Club Member, but not this time. The hotel is ongoing through a renovation process, but I don’t think that’s going to help customers having a refreshing night. Finally, I was to complaint but the not-moving line at the front desk discourage me.

We stayed at the HI Mercy account of relative in ICU at Mercy Hosp. Only two problems, Boys BBall took over the solitude with their run of the place attitude and the reconstruction. Other than that, it is a close place to stay, but not worth the discount they offer the Hospital.

I thought the shuttle service back and forth from Wells Fargo was very good. Having 2 and 3 vans was so much better than in years past. It really made a difference for our group.
I was also able to get a breakfast set up for a wrestler to have right away in the AM. That was huge in getting us on our way in the AM.
Check in was quick compared to other years.

We recently spent two nights at this location. It was very cold outside and our window didn't close all of the way. Also, the restaurant was relocated in to a conference and I was told that I couldn't just buy a cup of coffee. The staff were friendly.

I've stayed here before as well as the other IGH hotel 2 miles away. The staff here has always been very gracious, kind, and greet you with a smile. As a platinum priority club member, they give a nice goody bag at check in. This property is older and I think it is great that they are currently renovating and updating the bar and lobby. I know they recently updated fixtures in rooms, got new furniture and bedding as well as carpeting.
Here is my issue. A previous review stated that the rooms facing the freeway were loud from the bad windows in the room. The hotel responded by requesting a room on the other side. I was on the other side last night. The weather was cold and very windy. So windy that the sound of a roaring wind tunnel allowed for zero sleep.zero sleep. So loud that the tv couldn't mask the sound without perhaps waking neighbors. I even recorded the sound with my phone. It resembled being on the other end of a phone conversation when the other person is on a roller coaster. Ok maybe they will get new windows. But why is this property double the price of the sister property by Drake. Upon checkout, another couple commented to me how they hope my windows were better than theirs. I'm a loyal priority club member, I'll be back when renovations are finished.

The room itself was comfortable and very clean. The staff helped in all ways needed. I wish I had been informed of the extent of construction going on during my stay, both the resturant and bar being remodeled. Used a conference room for both which wasn't too bad, though in the evenings they were understaffed for serving everyone in a timely manner. The breakfast offered was good, when they had food available. Every morning I was there (3), the food was gone and not refilled while I had the time to eat, approximately 30mins. I got charged, too much I believe, each morning even though all I received was what I could scrap from the bottom of the trays, not close to enough to fill a person. So I had to also run through a fast food resturant. I hope this changes because I do stay in Des Moines a few times a year, and will for sure be back for the trade show next year, and would like stay in this area again.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by epeace333 Terrible property, great location
I realize the hotel is in the middle of an upgrade, but even with a newer lobby and restaurant, I would still not recommend this hotel. The room I stayed in was old, needing rehab, but very clean. Unfortunately, I was kept wide awake by the shabby windows that did nothing to muffle the freeway noise outside, and by the loud snoring in the room next to me. The location was the main reason I stayed here, but from now on, I'll drive a bit further to get a good night's sleep.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by eida Comfortable Beds, Good Pizza,
Comfortable Beds. Water Pressure great in the showers. We were expecting to hear a lot of noise in the halls that night with the hotel housing a large number of Dance Teams. We never heard a thing all night long. When we got back to our room we ordered a Pizza for delivery and the Pizza arrived ahead of schedule plus it was good. We made coffee the next morning and drank a cup of that before we checked out. We had decided to walk down the stairs vs waiting for the elevators the next morning and we were dumped outside and had to walk around the bldg. I would NOT recommend taking the stairs.

Had a very restful night. Bed was excellent and zero noise from hallway. Internet signal was excellent.
Returned to room late after visiting a family member at Mercy Hospital, but hotel restaurant was still open. I ate solo at the bar (and watched the game). Was astounded how good the steak and vegies were on my plate. Great service too from bartender, I forgot her name.
Pleasant experience.

I choose this hotel because of its proximity to downtown; I did not realize it was not that close. However, the staff was most accomodating and drivers were available to take us to restaurants recommended by the front desk personnel.
The hotel is undergoing renovations and the first morning there was no hot water; also, the restaurant did not have the full breakfast bufet. Again, the employees were most kind and apologetic about the inconveniences.
The nightly specials in the bar are good and prices very reasonable.
Anyone going to Mercy hospital will be glad they stay at this property - the closest to the hospital.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by brianm7 Good Service - Poor Facilities
Staff is friendly & helpful. The building is quite dated, rooms are small - although both are kept quite clean. Parking garage does not appear to be in very good condition and made us quite nervous to park in there. Security door from the parking garage into the hotel is UNSECURED, it did not require a key card to enter! Pool is marginal, no jacuzzi or sauna. The restaurant serves decent food, but it is a major disappointment that there is not coffee available in the lobby. A maybe 10 oz. coffee was $2.00, a bit steep. I understand that there are in room coffee makers, it would just be a nice bonus - particularly for rewards club members. I understand that HI's with restaurants normally don't have a continental breakfast, however as a business traveler whom is on the go, a sit down breakfast just isn't feasible. I applaud the staff but hope to see HI breakground on a new facility nearby - SOON! I would like to stay in that area again, but in a nicer HI facility.

I had chosen a different holiday in that I didnt spend 10 minutes in and asked to change. The Priority Club and Holiday Inn staff made the change very easy and I was so appreciative. The downtown Mercy Holiday inn was big, the staff at the restaurant were very good and the food was delicious. My room was fabulous!! Very large and beautiful view.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by tori7870 Great location to Des Moines Marathon weekend activities
Great location for Des Moines Downtown area activities (including the Des Moines Marathon). Plenty of parking and easy on off interstate. Comfortable bed to sleep in and room pretty nice. Make sure to request floor 8 or lower...Banquet room (where receptions are held) is on floor 10 and I didn't get much sleep the Saturday night (because they put me on the 9th floor right under dj# before the race because of the music and thumping #walls and ceiling a bit thin#. The staff wasn't overly friendly but not out right rude either. Be prepared to visit the front desk to have your card reactivated #I had to go twice once because it was next to my cell phone in my purse and evidently deactivated the second time I have no idea why it deactivated because it was in my back pocket next to nothing but fabric#. I didn't eat there so I don't know how good the food is. parking garage gross #as well as getting to it) but it did look like they were working on it.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Oxley Nice room but not relaxing.
When we got to the hotel the staff was very pleasant and the room was nice and clean. Unfortunately, there was a wedding reception taking place the same night we stayed. The noise from the reception was ridiculous. We stayed on the 8th floor and the wedding reception took place on the 10th floor. My wife and I could clearly hear the music and ceiling shook from the wedding guests dancing. This happened until 12 am. My friend and his wife also spent the night on the 6th floor and they had the same complaint.
While the room was nice, the noise was unbearable and I would not recommend staying there, especially on the weekend.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by kew520 Uncomfortable temperature
As I approached the front desk for check-in I overheard other customers talking with hotel staff about the temperature (too hot) in their rooms. I heard staff members explain the cooling system was in "neutral" and offered guests use of fans. I thought "this can't be good". Sure enough my room on an upper floor was warm but I was tired from a day's travel and eventually fell asleep.
When I awoke in the morning the room was even more stuffy than when I arrived the previous night. After I took a shower and got myself ready for the day I couldn't cool down because the room was so hot. Here I am putting on a shirt and tie preparing for a business presentation and I'm sweating because a cooling system was in "neutral"!
Very uncomfortable start to my day and I couldn't get out of the hotel fast enough that morning to get into some cooler, and fresher, air.
I understand maintenance has to be done on properties but I'm thinking I should have received some prior notification so I could make a choice about whether I wanted to stay at this location. Even as I went through the check-in process the front desk staff made no mention of the cooling system issues. Very disappointing overall experience. Holiday Inn has higher expectations, or should have higher expectations.
Rest of the hotel may have been at a five-star level but the heating/cooling situation took my focus.

We stay at this hotel at least twice a month. During our stay we are always pleased with the level of service given to us. Checking in is always fast and easy and the staff are very helpful.
The evening staff that is usually there when we arrive are very friendly. The manager, Tramaine, goes above and beyond with his level of customer service. He has always been able to accomodate us and make us comfortable, even on a few occasions when we forgot to make reservations and the hotel was extremely full. We have never had a negative experience at this hotel and it is by far our favorite place to stay in the Des Moines metro area. It beats hotels that charge three times as much in terms of ambiance, comfort, staff courtesy and location.
Thank you for continuing to provide us with an excellent experience!

We were in Des Moines for the AQS Quilt Convention. The hotel is very convenient to the convention center and an easy walk in beautiful weather. We made use of the free shuttle back and forth to the convention center and to some great local restaurants. The hotel added drivers when the demand was too much for one van. The shuttle drivers were so friendly and accommodating, they made the trips more enjoyable.
