Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by JDean14 Great service and unexpected room upgrade
My boyfriend and I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Duluth. When we arrived, we were allowed to check in TWO hours early which was awesome since we had been hiking all day at Gooseberry Falls. Also, our room was upgraded to a King suite on the 16th floor (top floor) with a view of the lift bridge. We ordered a small meal from room service and although the food arrived promptly it was pretty average (I recommend skipping the gyro if you do order something). Overall, we had a great time in Duluth and our stay at the hotel was great. I especially loved the noon check out, I haven't been able to sleep in for months so it was nice to not feel rushed in the morning.

We had such a great stay!! Very clean and comfortable room. We all slept until about 8:30!!! We love the pool and pool area! Great for kids, which was the MOST important for us! We asked for a later checkout and the girls at the front let us stay an extra hour! More pool time!
Thank you so much for everything!!

Staff is warm and responsive. Location is convenient for anything downtown, walking distance to Canal Park, DECC, etc. Rooms are clean and well-maintained. Kids love the stainless steel pool. Only complaint is that the toilet paper is unbelievably thin. Next time, I'll try to remember to bring my own!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Lakes traveler A nice clean room downtown
Over all my wife and I were really happy with our stay .
The only thing that was dissapointing was the sky in one area going to canal park was down for repairs (not holiday inns fault)
In order to use it to crops the highway we had to go out to the street and down a few blocks to bypass the construction. This wasn't a bad thing we like exercise but there is a bus stop in front of the hotel that always seems to be busy with questionable people. They tend to stare and it's potentially uncomfortable for some. We went out one night and for of duluths finest were reading a guy his rights for what I'm not sure , the other night there was a young lady with a baby in the stroller fighting with a guy about personal issues (similar to Jerry springer episode ) other then that the room was very nice and clean on the 10th floor and a nice view towards the lake.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Scosh89 room rate error
As A long time priority member, 35 years in Priority IHB club, and seasoned traveler, I am very frustrated and offended that the rate quoted to me via national reservation Hoiday Inn system was NOT honored upon check in at hotel. The hotel manager, Jason, advised me that no record of the rate was listed with my reservation #, and I had to prove that the rate was quoted correctly. I had a reservation number but not a hard copy of the reservation, and I consider the hotel/staff incompetent and insulting that I had to verify the rate already confirmed by Hol Inn. I did have to go online, creating additional inconvenience and loss of my personal vacation time to locate the email and generate a hard copy of the quoted rate, an $80. difference for a 2 night stay. Only then, was the correct rate honored. Apologies were made and an added discount was offered. We still chose not to stay the added night, another inconvenience, and would choose other hotels in the Duluth, Mn area next time.

The parking ramp was interesting to say the least. It took a day to figure it all our and the elevator system was confusing. We only stayed one night so by the time we left we had it all figured out. lol

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Marsi123 a bit off the "fun part of Duluth"
Located on a city street a few blocks away from the desired Canal Area, this Holiday Inn is in an urban area. We went for a walk at night after checking in and quickly turned around when we saw a residential living program. As we were walking back a police car pulled up to that store front.
As for the hotel itself it was a mixed bag. We checked-in in the evening, after dinner. We went to our room and found it located next to the kiddie pool. When I went to request a room change I was told that was all that was available.
My husband then went to the front desk and he was told the same thing. Since we had just flown in from California, we were concerned about the noise beginning earlier than we wanted to wake up. As we were walking back to the room an employee tracked us down and said he had heard us talking and there was another room available that should be quieter. IT was a handicapped room.
That turned out to be perfect and we slept until after 10:00.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by koj1keitz Good stay in a great location
This property is located very close to the heart of downtown Duluth, just blocks from Canal Park and convenient to nearly anywhere in town. The entrance to the hotel is a bit different, buried inside a parking ramp so no Lobby Entrance is obvious from outside around the building. The parking is a little odd also, with all of it within the attached ramp, which is shared with the retail shops of the building as well. Past that, once in the main lobby everything appeared to be modern, current, well taken care of, and clean. Polite staff was helpful. Room was quite clean and comfortable. The tub/shower temperature control was backwards from what you normally encounter. Room was quiet. Restaurant situation is a bit odd, with none of the "hotel restaurants" actually residing INSIDE the hotel, but rather in the attached retail shop area. The nice family restaurant was only open for breakfast and lunch, the sandwich shop (with no dedicated seating) was similar. The "dinner" restaurant was actually the bar, and not classy at all. Other than that, a very nice place to stay. Prices are high in the summer in Duluth, but that's every hotel because Duluth is a hot vacation spot.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Randy14 Expected Better
Easy check in from the parking ramp. Counter help spoke a little to fast for my liking. Port side room had a nice view of the Twin Ports. But in the morning. going down for breakfast was a big let down. Gas stations have a better selection in their deli's. They have more room to sit and relax at a gas station. And the upkeep of gas station table settings is cleaner. The window black box paint is chipped and scratched. And the grill work above that has as much dust as it can hold, on it.
That's why I expected better.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junebug1909 Terrible experience
My family and I were in Duluth for a fun weekend, as we had booked a train ride. We had relatives from out of state who had never been to Duluth before, and after this experience, will probably never come back. I made reservations well in advance, to accomodate for two young children. I requested either adjoining rooms, or rooms right next to each other. When we arrived at 3:30, we were told our rooms were not ready because they were still being cleaned, but would be guaranteed by 4:00. When we went back up to the desk at 4:00, our rooms were still not ready, and we ended up waiting until 5:30 to get our rooms. We were told other rooms were ready, but they were not next to each other. This is not what we had requested. When we finally got up to our rooms, 1.5 hours after our "guaranteed" time, they were filthy. The bathroom floor looked as though it had not been cleaned, there was hair and dirt around the base of the toilet, hair on the sink, the top of the fridge was filthy, there were wrappers under the furniture, and supposedly we waited because the rooms were being cleaned. Unfortunately, we did not have the luxury of waiting for other rooms, as we had a baby that needed to nap. When we checked out, the price we were told to pay for the rooms was not what we were quoted when I originally booked the rooms. When we asked if there was a hospitality discount, we were asked why we did not mention to the front desk that our rooms were dirty. Why should we have to tell you that your staff did not do their job? And why should we have been more inconvenienced when you knew well in advance that we were staying at your hotel? Also, we had to park in the oversize part of the hotel, and that was terrible. Go through an alley, it was dark, and smelly, and not at all a place for children. The manager at the front desk was not at all receptive to any of the complaints we made, and pretty much said it was my fault because I chose to wait for the rooms we had requested. We stayed at this hotel before, and never had an issue, but we were extremely disappointed with this stay, and will never stay here again.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by janece62 Friendly check in staff and ccomfortable room
I had booked our room using the 1-800 number on the internet and in order to get the price quoted on the internet, they said I had to take a handicap accessible room. When we arrived, the gentleman checking us in, upgraded us to the room we actually wanted at no extra charge. We were traveling by bike so needed laundry facilities. They were clean and very reasonable in price. We hope to return to Duluth in the future to see more of the sights and would definitely stay here again.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by PMcCinDC Good city location
I had a comfortable, clean, modern room. The AC was too cold when I arrived, but that was easily remedied. The only significant drawbacks were that it was very dark, overlooking one of the pools--and the pool didn't close till 10:30 pm, with lots of screaming kids right up to closing time. The hotel is in a convenient location in downtown Duluth, but has a strange, uninviting entrance via a parking ramp. The restaurants are at street level, below the lobby, and are in a quite dirty public area just inside from a busy bus stop. The offerings at the cafe were much less appealing than at a Starbucks a block away. But staff there and in the hotel itself were pleasant and helpful. My selection was based on limited availability on a summer weekend in Duluth; the accommodations were good if expensive. But I think the overall ambiance of the facility makes it less likely that I would stay on any return visit.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by bgriff Noisy air conditioner , refrigerator odor
The room had a pretty strong odor coming from behind the refrigerator. When we got in the room there was 1 towel, wash cloth and face towel for a 2 bed sofa suite. The air conditioner made a lot of noise when it kicked on, sounded like a welder kicking in. I expected better considering the price of the room. It was the most expensive hotel we stayed in during a 5 day trip, worst of the bunch.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Times9 Excellent attitudes from front desk, maintenance and maid
We had nothing but an excellent service from all areas of this hotel!! The hot tub and pool were the best for temperatures of any place that we have ever stayed. The young lady that checked us in was outstanding to make sure that we were happy. We had trouble the first day with the air conditioner and the maid had the maintenance person to the room within 5 minutes and he was excellent. We had a pool side suite and loved it. We will not stay at any other hotel in Duluth when we go back. Thank you Holiday Inn and Suites for making our stay one to remember!!!!
