The location is great, a little expensive. Breakfast was really busy, felt like I was at school queuing for nearly 30 minutes.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Swan5 A great value for money break at the Holiday Inn
Booked this hotel direct with Holiday Inn and as a family of four plus a baby the booking was straightforward and all e-mail queries answered very promptly by the Customer Service Team. Check in was swift and the room was clean and spacious enough for us all for the purpose of sleeping. We did not spend any other time in the room so that was all we needed. Evening meal carvery adequate and lovely breakfast. There was lots of choice and the cooked breakfast in particular was delicious. Yes, it was busy and we did have to queue but it was the half term holiday. We all enjoyed a lovely swim and a relax in the jacuzzi before visiting the zoo, the main purpose of our visit. It was great to be able to walk out of the hotel and into the zoo and we were able to leave our car at the hotel until we returned later that day. For what we paid I think this hotel was great value for money and I would not hesitate to recommend it to friends who were going to visit Edinburgh Zoo.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Qashqai1 Lovely weekend stay
We have stayed at Holiday Inn in the past and always been quite happy with the service. Our welcome this time was excellent. The young chap at reception was so welcoming and helpful, ensuring we had a quiet room high up. Our room was fine. Breakfast on the first morning was excellent, however on the second morning the 'scrambled eggs' were quite strange and I did wonder if in fact they were reconstituted eggs as the texture was really quite strange and not particularly palatable. All in all though, an excellent hotel with a superb bus service right outside for trips into town. Although this time we travelled by train from Inverness, the parking facilities at the hotel are superb. Definitely recomment this hotel.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by sihirst Good duty manager, but we had some issues.
First I would like to praise the duty manager who was very understanding and helped us out.
We had problems with the room temp. It was too hot on our first night and the air con didn't work. We had to sleep with the window open and the noise from the road was quite loud. We were also given a very noisy fan. They were unable to fix the problem. The next day I asked for it to be sorted out whilst we were out. When we returned I don't think it had been looked at and we were told that the air con had been switch off becuase of the time of year. I felt that I was being fobbed off as there was obviously somthing wrong with the unit and I don't feel that even in the winter it is aceptable to switch these units off globally. Different people like their room at different temperatures.
The duty manager came to speak to us and although he couldn't solve the issue he was very simpathetic and helped us the best he could.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Jane1320 Weekend City Break
The welcome was very warm, helpful and friendly. The hotel was attractive and clean. The room was clean and comfortable with lots of little extras to make our stay easier. The access to the spa was straightforward. The staff were always friendly and polite without ever being intrusive. It was perfect for our zoo trip, being right next door, something I hadn't really picked up on in the details! It was fantastic to hear the monkeys calling first thing in the morning! Extremely simple to get into the very centre of Edinburgh as there is a bus stop right outside the hotel and buses leave every few minutes and take only a few minutes, they are quite cheap, compared to the centre parking which isn't! We would stay in this hotel again and again! Thank you Jane

We were visiting the Zoo - so great location - but also quick & easy access to city centre. It was lovely to be able to have a relaxing sauna & swim at the end of a hard days play! A busy place.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Moomoo Fantastic weekend away
We stayed in this lovely hotel 5th-7thOct 2012. Main reason for our stay was to meet up with friends and go to see the pandas ( the zoo is right next door). Once the car is parked you don't need to touch it again. Overall experience was great- room comfort, cleanliness, breakfast, swimming pool and the views were absolutely fantastic (ask for a high floor). I couldn't fault it ( and I'm fussy!!). Bus stop is right outside which takes you in 10 mins right into centre of Edinburgh. Getting the bus back out was easy to find. Would highly recommend.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sharron Fantastic service
We decided to visit this hotel due to the fact it was next door to the zoo and offered a excellent package as we were having a few days away after getting married. We found it good value for money, clean and welcoming. I have to comment on the restaurant though, the meals we had there and the food offered to the children was excellent. Having a fussy 3 yr old having a buffet for her was great. The a la carte was fabulous! Also our stay was made by very memorable by the restaurant manager, he was lovely. Very personable and great with our daughter Sophie. Overall I would have to say a great family hotel. Well done holiday inn, we will be back!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simonetal Fantastic Restaurant 'Sampan'
This is a really great location for visiting the zoo in particular and Edinburgh in general. There was a great family atmosphere. Our meal in the hotel's oriental restauant 'Sampan' was absolutely fantastic - a real hidden gem!
Our only criticism was that breakfast was a complete 'rammy' with prolonged queuing for the buffet.
Overall it was a great family hotel - will definately be back.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Dereknic Fine hotel let down by poor customer service
Hotel, seemed OK on arrival, quick enough turnaround on arrival, and used the restaurants, it has a small gym and pool, with a sauna and jacuzzi, which was welcome, food was fine, the a la carte pretty good,
Bedrooms are OK, but not excellent, beds are pretty uncomfortable, but the room itself was fine.
Plenty space in the lobby etc., and although the hotel was busy, it didn't seem to be over busy.
Customer Service was poor, in particular the reception staff that REFUSED to call us a taxi....this is the first time i have stayed in a hotel where the reception has refused to call a taxi....very strange, but on the whole not too bad a hotel

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Edin10Kers Bupa 10K stay
Stayed 2 nights with wife as we were running Edinburgh 10K.
I found the reception staff very helpful and polite as I did the bar and restaurant staff (particulary the bar). Can't fault the staff, well just one area - the chamber staff. Came back from race at 1pm and disappointed to see room hadn't been cleaned. All i wanted was 40-winks and a good soak in bath. Despite the 'do not disturb' sign on the door, a member of the cleaning staff continually knocked on door and awoke us. Very annoying. Had to then go out later and find clean towels. The breakfast was busy but no queues or waiting for tea/coffee and the selection was as expected and very satisfying. We ate in Sampans restuarant on first night but the food was rather disappointing. Fish cake starter was terrible and curry & fish mains were so-so. Prawn crackers were good though and that despite having to ask twice for them!! Room was fine - usual 2 single beds pushed together but still enough space except in bathroom. TV and kettle all in working order. Bring your own biscuits though. No mini-bar in our room! All in all, the Hotel was fine. Great bar area to relax in and although there are TVs showing Sport you never really notice it. The location is superb for a bus to the City centre. Never used the gym/pool but although small, looked ideal. I noticed you had to pay for wifi. Luckily the 3G reception was excellent for smart phones. Realised after getting home I'd left a few clothing items in drawer but although the Lost Property supervisor ensured me everthing no matter how small that is left in room is logged in the lost property book, there was no entry for my room...

toilet was smelly, air conditioning did not work also 10 per cent service charge is rediculous , stayed in holiday inns in north america and in europe and never had a service charge , we told the duty manager of our concerns and he said he would fix them also he said the 10 percent service charge was company policy if so then ich has lost a customer

Obtained the room on points and must say I was treated as an important guest. The room was quiet and clean and quite comfortable. It is in a nice section of the city and only a little over 4 miles to the airport. Was located right next to the Zoo so took advantage of that and got to see the Panda bear. Overall a very good experience.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by bobski Edinburgh Holiday Inn`
We booked this hotel about 4 weeks in advance and paid a non-refundable price of xx for one nights stay with no breakfast or anything else, which was as we wanted.
This was for my wife, 11yr old daughter and myself and we requested a triple room, i.e. 3 single beds.
On arrival we were greated by a nice lady at reception, all going well so far.
We were given the key to our room and given directions to get to it.
We eventually reached our room which couldn't have been any further away from the reception area.
On opening the door we felt the cold actually coming out of the room and on stepping inside found that it was very cold as if the room hadn't been used, or heated for ages. We tried adjusting the heating controls but to no avail, no heat was coming out the vent only cold air. The room contained 2 single beds and a sofa bed. The sofa bed was not made up. We only had 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel and 1 tiny bottle of shower gel. We also found that the tea making facilities which looked okay only had 2 cup and 4 of the tiny little UHT milk cartons, between 3 of us !!
We were intend staying only 1 night and combining this with a trip to the theatre and the to visit the pandas the following day.
Only having time to drop in our bags and then leave for the theatre we contacted the reception desk and infomred them of the above points, adding that if the room was as cold on our return we would be wanting another room. I closed the curtains to try and save more cold air coming in.
On returning from the theatre the sofa bed had been made up, the curtains were open again and we had a little portable heater. We also had more milk and towels.
As I stated earlier I closed the curtains to keep any heat in the room as when you stand at the window with the curtains open you can feel the cold coming from outside. ( the windows were closed ).
I then tried to connect my computer to the wifi service and as I couldn't gain access phoned doen to the front desk. The time was around 11pm by this time and I had to wait almost 5 mins before the phone was answered. I was then informed that the reason I didn't get access to the internet was that you didn't have a credit card number as we had paid upfront. I asked why you needed a credit card I was informed that you charge for wifi access. I couldn't believe that one. I could go outside and walk along the road 50 yards and get free wifi and here is a huge company like IHG actually charging for wifi access. We have stayed in many many hotels around the world and these days the norm is to give free wifi.
Anyway we all then settled down for a good nights sleep. I chose to sleep in the sofa bed as it was beside the window and I didn't want my daughter to be cold during the night. It was one of the mose uncomfortable beds I have ever slept in, well when I say slept I only managed 2 or 3 hours.
The next day we all awoke to the charming coldness still surrounding us despite having the heater on during the night.
We all got up and went to visit the pandas.
Back at reception when I went to check out again the lady was very plesant until I was asked how we enjoyed our stay. When I told her all of the above, especially the wifi part, another lady join the conversation to say that the reason you still charged for wifi was that all the other hotel chains charge for it.
Well in my opinion this is untrue and i did say that I wasn't getting at her but at the company.
Well that was our story of a one night stay at the Holiday Inn - Edinburgh Zoo.
We met someone in the zoo who had also stayed in a hotel chain in Edinburgh with her family, 2 adult and 2 kids. They were given a lovely room and also included breakfast all for the sum of £xx - 16 .
Although not as close to the zoo she thought her stay was lovely.
Anyway, you will guess by now that I was not happy with our stay. This is actually our second visit to the hotel and it will be our last. The hotel did not seem very busy that evening, the car park was not anywhere near full so, I would have thought that we would have been given a better room closer to reception area and not one almost in the zoo !!... Would also like to think that if we have booked for 3 people the room is setup this way and not have to go chasing your reception staff to fix it
