I stay at this hotel on a regular basis for business. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The rooms are comfortable and very nicely furnished, and the hotel has always been quiet so no problem getting a good night's sleep. There is a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the food is quite good. The hotel has a pool, fitness center, guest laundry facility, and also valet laundry. There is also a bar/lounge and a casino. And all of this for a very reasonable price. I would not consider staying anyplace else when I am in the area.

I'm not one to run-down a place easily. But this "casino" (sic) was not a happy stay for us, and they earned what follows:
1. Yes, we were (overly) recognized as Platinum members, but puhhhlease, no need to make a big production (in front of others in the lobby) of our great choice, "salty or sweet?" (referring to the cheap snacks)
Yet how about a real recognition? At other HI's, we'd be offered room upgrades, or coupons for a breakfast, but not this one. Oddly, we were told they do it for other Platinum members, but not for us, since we were staying as "a reward night."
Some reward..... seemed more like we got "downgraded" for being a platinum member, for using our points, not the other way around. We've had far better reward night experiences at other HI.'s.
Second, let's be candid, this property, like its sister h/i hotel in Ponce, is run, first and foremost as a casino, with hundreds and hundreds of computer slot machines, crammed into every available inch of the downstairs. Yes they have "entertainment," but in the middle of one of the slot machine rooms. (i.e., it's only for the casino folks) Ok, if you like slot machines, you'll love this place.
The parking lot was jam packed with local casino customers. Unlike Ponce HI casino, at least Mayaguez HI has a separate parking lot for hotel guests, (the few of us that I detected) guarded by security to keep out casino patrons. (and there were hundreds, if not thousands of gamblers -- and their lots were full.)
The room they assigned us was rather run-down. Ok, the bed was comfortable, the room clean, except for the sliding glass doors, which only opened a few inches, after unbolting. (no porch) Sunsets to the distant ocean might be nice, if they put you on the top floor. (we weren't)
We were actually cold that night, and the room a/c - heater only would cool. No warmth. (and we couldn't open the door much, to let in warm air, lest we had to hear the noise from a neighborhood party) Maintenance man came up, but was unable to get it to work. (not sure he understood our request.) Security apparently did manage to quiet the neighborhood.
Ah, but then we thought we'd go enjoy the well lit, inviting pool. Alas, they locked the pool at 8:00 p.m. !!! (never mind the casino was open all night long) If you need any more evidence that this place is run with the interests of the casino patrons and operators in mind first, there it is.
