This hotel is in the perfect spot! Downtown close to everything with a wonderful shuttle service that picked us up at DiMillos during a rainstorm and will take you just about anywhere (within reason) you want to go. Beautiful view of the bay, Keurig coffee maker, big tv - although we spent very little time in our room. We ate breakfast in the hotel the morning we left - they open VERY early. The blueberry pancakes were totally loaded with sweet blueberries and the Maine maple syrup was served warm. Friendly, accommodating staff - I could find no fault at all with the hotel (other than AC that was a tad noisy).
Would definitely stay there again!

We stayed for two nights paid by points on our IHG Member Master Card. We were treated like VIPs at check in. The hotel was nice and clean, and all staff were pleasant. The hotel is an easy walk from the old port, and several very nice restaurants. I would certainly recommend this hotel to friends.

We had vouchers to use on breakfast and we used them on the buffet and the food was horrible. It was old dried out and not worth 11.99

We were on the top floor with a view of the bay and loved it. Room was very clean, comfortable, enjoyed the large indoor pool, staff was friendly, courteous and very helpful. Would definitely stay again.

It is tough to get a full night sleep when the bed is making such loud noises. You couldn't move without everyone in the room waking up. It was too late to call the front desk to ask for a room change. Please check this out so future guest won't have that problem. Behind the chair and the under lip of the sink could use a good cleaning. The staff was wonderful and the location great.
Deana at the front desk was great! She checked us in and helped us with our questions.

A beautiful and well-kept room, very friendly and helpful staff, and good location for downtown Portland sites such as the Portland Art Museum. I appreciated the shuttle to the airport. Too bad there was no breakfast--which less expensive hotels usually offer--and wifi was so slow that it was almost worthless, a disappointment after seeing the advertising touting the implementation of this service across the chain.

Perfectly located close to the Old Port, but not so close you feel the chaos. The staff is amazingly attentive and the facilities are well cared for. My family loved our time here!

We found the hotel to be comfortable, clean and fairly quiet. The location is terrific for walking around town vs. taking your car. Considering that we were in Portland over a weekend, the hotel price was fairly reasonable compared to others in town.

The Holiday Inn by the Bay was a great location, close enough to all the shops and restaurants that you could walk to everything. We did use the shuttle service a couple times and taxi service only when we went to a marina across the Bay. We would definitely stay here again and the added cost of a Bay View was well worth it. We had great views all the time!

This was my fifth time staying at the holiday in Portland by the bay.
Each time I am more than satisfied with the room, the staff, and the value of the stay. But what cannot be beat in my mind is the location of this property. A mere four blocks down hill to the port it self, it is close to all the stores, Monument Square, all the restaurants along the water and only about a mile to the Ferry Pier. For the price, this hotel cannot be beat!
I did not eat any food there nor did I have time to relax because I was there for an event. But I would like to say that although there were other events being held there and many wedding guests staying in the rooms, the hotel was quiet and smoke-free.

A great hotel that is highly walkable to the old port district filled with restaurants and shops. It's in a quiet location and was very clean with awesome ocean views if you can get a bayside upper floor room. Staff was extremely helpful and especially the shuttle driver who was awesome. I would stay here again and would also recommend it to others.

We had a wonderful stay! Staff was excellent! Front desk was very helpful with places to go and directions. Breakfast hostess was very friendly with a positive attitude - great start for the day! Needed the shuttle once on a rainy day - service was awesome. Will stay again and will recommend to friends and family.

My wife and I stayed at the HI in Portland for two nights July 2 and 3. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Portland and I would absolutely stay here again. It's close enough to the Old Port area but far enough away that you don't get all of the noise and pedestrian traffic that you would get if staying down by the water. The front desk staff failed to tell us they had a shuttle service to downtown-a security person had to to inform us of this. I can overlook the small stuff because the overall experience was excellent!

I have stayed at a lot of Holiday Inns over my life time. I must say I was a little disappointed considering the price of my room. You are simply paying for location and nothing else.
Don't get me wrong staff was friendly, rooms were clean, just no extras or wow factor. That is room was satisfactory, view was mediocre, amenities okay, and not even a hot breakfast included in the price of admission.
Only pro is that you are less than 10 minute walk to the wharf, shops and restaurants, although sidewalks in the area leave something to be desired.

Loved the complimentary shuttle service which we used approx. 4 times during our 2 day stay. Even though the hotel wasn't located right down by the shops and ports (approx. 10 minute walk), the lower price and shuttle service justify a stay here.
Check in was efficient, rooms were clean, staff very courteous. Bathroom a little out-dated. Overall great, would stay again.

There was no friendly greeting from the staff when I arrived. Fire alarm went off at 5:30am so there was no A/C or electricity so it was very hot until 10am. The staff did not notify any one in the hotel what was going on until you called the front desk.

I am writing to convey my disappointment with my stay last weekend at the Portland-By-The-Bay Holiday Inn property. My sister and I stayed in the hotel as we celebrated our sister's wedding at the Maine State Theatre on Saturday, June 28, 2014.
Our room was not very clean, and my sister's bedding was stained and did not appear clean. On Sunday, there was a power outage, (out of the control of the Hotel), forcing the air conditioning to be shut off as well as elevator service. What was upsetting is that even though the hotel knew it was a transformer accident in Portland, they did not call our room by telephone to convey what was happening. The fire alarm rang and rang and I had to call the front desk to see if it was actual emergency or not. Additionally, my sister has several health challenges. Instead of sending someone up to help us, the staff asked if we needed help when we were already in the lobby preparing to check out. The staff did not reach out to help us. Furthermore, my other sister, the bride, and her new husband had to bring all their luggage down ten flights of stairs and only when they were at the bottom, did someone ask to help them.....seems a bit backwards to me.....When I spoke to the staff upon check out, the clerk agreed to waive the parking fee. When I left the hotel, the parking garage was open to public due the power outage so everyone's parking was free. I do not find this adequate compensation for the good money I spent to not sleep in the hotel. Sincerely, Shirley Faulkner

We travel to Old Port often so we decided to try a new hotel and chose the Holiday Inn. We booked a non-smoking room however all the rooms directly across the hall were smoking and the odors permeated the common spaces and seeped into our room. When we complained the follow morning the hotel staff was rude and condescending and went so far as to question our integrity because we did not "complain" late at night when we arrived back at our room late that night. Because the hotel had experienced a power outage we waited until we returned home and then called the hotel to ask about our concerns and again were met with rude and unpleasant staff.
Also, the walls between rooms are not very soundproof.

I've stayed at this property before and everything was perfect. However as luck would have it, this time was a FAIL. The power went out before 6am on the day I was checking out.The fire alarm went off throughout the entire building. (I was told later at the front desk that this is done just to let guests know the power is out....Really?) The back up generator apparently only runs lighting in the hallway. After walking down 8 flights of stairs I was told I could have some glow sticks, you would think staff could hand these out on the floors, as you could not see in the bathrooms. My daughter was burned with hot water in the tub. I asked two individuals at the front desk if guests would be compensated in some way. I was told "No, because it is not our problem." "It is not our problem that someone hit a transformer up the street." After watching people that were partially disabled navigate the stairways I asked the front desk why they did not have a suitable back up generator. They told me that Hospitals don't even have generators like that. (FALSE). I then spoke with maintenance who informed me that there is a brand new $130k generator that has not been wired yet. It is designed to run the elevator system. I brought this to the attention of the front desk attendant who again advised me that Hospitals don't even have that. After three trips up and down 8 flights of stairs to get my belongings out, it was not a very relaxing experience. I can't imagine those whom had problems walking. Now, I understand things happen, but to not have the proper emergency equipment hooked up when it is on premises, and to scowl at the suggestion of some compensation for the inconvenience. Unacceptable!

We have occasion to stay overnight in Portland, ME once and sometimes twice a year as part of a New England vacation, have selected the Holiday Inn twice, and plan to do so again in the future. Our stay was very pleasant, comfortable and safe. In addition, the Portland Museum coupon was a nice surprise, as was the 1/2-off coupon for a beverage at the bar - - and we loved the happy hour with great snacks to cap off our busy day of touring around town. We were a little disappointed that there wasn't a continental breakfast included or at least a breakfast bargain or coupon of some kind, and it would have been great to have free parking. However, neither was a deal breaker. Overall, our stay was a very satisfactory and positive experience.
