Portland is a beautiful city with a lot of interesting places to visit. The problem with this location is that though these locations are within walking distance for the young, it is certainly a difficult walk back to the hotel all uphill. The hotel is located probably a half to 3/4 of a mile from the Old Port, which is where everything is. It is, though, further from Old Port than several other properties.
The hotel does a good job overcoming this with their excellent shuttle service. The people operating the service were fantastic and came to pick us up literally within 5-10 minutes of placing the call to the hotel requesting a pickup in town. They also gave us a nice narrated tour of the town on the way back.
The indoor pool was nice, and I would imagine this would be a great thing during the winter. Ample sized fridges and microwaves in each room were also plusses. The rooms do appear a bit dated, though, and are probably in line for a bit of a touch up. Also, as with many seaside properties, the air conditioning leaves a bit to be desired.
The main drawback, though, happened at check in. I reserved 4 bay view rooms about 2 months in advance of our arriving. At the time of booking, I requested rooms on the same floor in the same general area of the hotel, though they did not have to be directly adjacent. Several days in advance of our arrival, I emailed the hotel reiterating my request, but did not receive a response. As a result, two days before arrival, I called the hotel to reaffirm the request, and was advised that as these were on the same reservation, they would place us in the same area of the hotel on the same floor.
Upon check-in, though, we were disappointed. First, we arrived at 3:55PM, and were advised that our rooms were not ready ("Check-in time was 4" we were told.). We waited, and our rooms were ready about 4:30PM or so. More disappointing, though, was the location of the rooms. We were given 2 rooms on the 10th floor separated by about 1/2 the length of the hotel, and 2 rooms on the 11th floor, again separated by about 1/2 the length of the hotel. When I questioned why this was occurring after the numerous confirmations, I was advised that they "had a lot of reservations and a lot of check-ins on that day." In my mind, this is not acceptable, really for anyone who had made the request significantly in advance, but especially for a Platinum/Spire Elite member. When I came back down later to discuss this further, I was asked what I'd like them to do with respect to compensation--not really a question that the guest is very equipped to answer cold--perhaps they should have proposed something.
Overall, Portland is a good place to visit for a long weekend. However, I am not sure I will be using this location again, even though the good service received from the shuttle service, and the staff, for the most part, might make me think twice.

I've stayed here numerous times for getaways, It never disappoints, I like staying here because it's within walking distance from Old Port. The rooms are always perfect and the staff are top notch. The restaurant/Bar is wonderful and the food is always great. I've stayed at other hotels but only becuase this one is already booked up. This is always my first choice when I go to Portland.
