Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by What a mix up Arrived at hotel and immediately there was a mix up with the room. When I was found on the system I was Sent to the first room. Unfortunately there was a lady sleeping. After walking back to reception I was given another room. Same thing again, only this time two young ladies were getting ready. This time I was upgraded and a call was made to the room in an attempt to make sure it was empty. After arriving at the room there was a deafening sound of conversation from inside. After several minutes of knocking I entered the room. Luckily it was just the tv on full volume. A final insult was when I came go check out. They wanted me to pay for the room upgrade. I politely explained the situation and refused. They staff were extremely polite and I can't fault them for that. The room served its purpose and was very clean, luckily I value the customer interaction higher than the actual service. January 15, 2014

The staff are lovely and friendly and it's always a comfortable stay. I would definitely recommend this hotel to people. I think the only criticism I have would be that the gym is a bit poor, but as this is a facility that a lot of places don't offer, it's still definitely a bonus. January 9, 2014

It had everything we needed for our stay. It is situated in a great place within walking distance to all necessities. I would recommend this hotel to friends and family visiting the area. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Break after Christmas Had a really nice 4 day break here after Christmas, hotel is situated just across from the Clarence pier, good view of the beach and sea. plenty of nice local restaurants either in Southsea and Gunwarf Quays. nice comfortable room with good shower and amenities, only downside was having to pay if you want Wi Fi which is free at most hotels these days. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Warm and Comfortable We took 2 double rooms as we were staying with our kids of 19 and 21. We were given rooms across the corridor from each other even though the hotel was busy the weekend before Christmas. The rooms were similar, both very clean, well appointed and warm on a very cold, wet and windy evening. The atmosphere in the bar and restaurant was festive and many runners for the Portsmouth Marathon the next day were resident. Breakfast was buffet style and all tastes were covered. The staff there were friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. The location is great, on the edge of old Portsmouth by Southsea Common and there is plenty of parking. January 3, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Service, nice rooms My stay at the Portsmouth Holiday Inn was very enjoyable, the staff on the food and beverage side were brilliant and I would actually single out Steven, as nothing was ever too much trouble for him and his nice relaxed inviting manner and his brilliant foodie knowledge. The rooms are very clean and well maintained and the staff that do this job are good because they are never seen, if you know what I mean. Overall a very enjoyable stay and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Holiday Inn Portsmouth. Cheers Chris December 17, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Rude reception staff member, told us lies!!!! We booked a night away as a Christmas treat. We arrived at the hotel, approx 4.30pm to find that the car park was full. However we were given a permit to enable us to park foc on the road. We went to check in which seemed to take ages, the receptionist couldn't find our booking first of all, but failed to let us know what the problem was but just kept us waiting. Eventually getting to our room, to find that he had given us a twin room rather than the double we had booked. I went back down to reception to be rudely told by the same person that the hotel was full although he had a couple more twins and did I want one of those and there was nothing he could do, "what do you expect me to do" was the reply I was met with!!!!! Not the customer service response you expect. I returned to our room and my partner went onto the Holiday Inn website and funnily enough could have booked, for that night, at least 7 standard double rooms so he had infarct lied!! Later we asked reception to get us a taxi but were directed to a dedicated taxi telephone line in reception. The line was engaged was almost 5 minutes and when we asked if there was an alternative taxi firm, we were told, by the same person who checked us in, what do we expect, it's a Saturday night. We decided to walk!! On returning to the hotel after our night out we couldn't have been met by a nicer young man, who wished us a good night and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast staff were extremely nice, the manager was really cheery and helpful. The choice was fantastic and good quality products - worth having. Overall not the best experience and perhaps some customer service skills could do with being brushed up, we would think before booking again. There are many other alternatives! December 16, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Choice Stayed here as was unable to stay in our usual hotel which is a sister one of The Holiday Inn (HIEX) all due to price! Was very surprised how nice it was and was able to leave car in car park and book in later, as arrived earlier than we should. The room was a good size and was surprised how warm and cosy it was. It was nice to have a bath and that was a big plus. We left first thing in the morning as we hadn't booked breakfast as part of our stay! We liked the touches by reception such as sweets left in dishes for you to take and also flask of coffee etc in the morning! Good location, about 10 minute walk from Gun Wharf Quays.Would use again if in the area and the price was right!! December 11, 2013

Checked in ok and was given a car parking permit to park on the street nearby which was good as we knew it would be busy for the Victorian fair. The only minor glitch was that we were charged over £30 for a cooked breakfast. When we challenged it we were told we must have had an evening meal in the restaurant when we asked for proof they got a little shirty and changed the invoice. Good job that we checked the invoice before setting off home. Not sure if we would use it again as it is not as close to Gun Wharf Quays as we would have liked. December 10, 2013

Everything was perfect; the welcome, the room and ensuite (excellent power shower), the bar/lounge, the breakfast. We walked to Gunwharf Quays which was a very pleasant 15 minute walk. We were surprised how quiet it was considering the close proximity to the Quays. We would definitely, actually I already have, recommended it to one of my friends. . November 29, 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by not as good as other holiday inns Stayed here for 1 saturday night 23/11. Hotel was clean and smart. Check in was fairly quick. Being a platinum elite member im used to having upgraded rooms including luxury bathroom products. Here i wasnt offered or given the items i have recieved in other holiday inns. Tried calling reception but got no answer the 2 times i rang, it was a enjoyable stay and would recommend the hotel. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ideal location and friendly staff Stayed for 2 nights, bed, breakfast and dinner , mature couple with 2 year old grand daughter. Had a family room which was very spacious, room 407. Staff were very friendly and although. Oat of guests seemed to be business guests it's children friendly. Food good as was the service and a nice touch of glass of wine on arrival in reception. Used the pool facilities and these were very clean ...if you can't park in the car park the hotel provides passes for the road directly outside. Approx 25 mins slow walk with pram to gun wharf quays so a normal walk there would be approx 15 mins. Good central location opposite the sea front at southsea. Would we visit again ? Yes we will. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Room Cleaning We generally enjoyed our stay and always found staff friendly and helpful. The only thing which was a little disappointing was that we had to ask at reception for our room to be cleaned at around 4pm during the stay before we could go back and relax, which we thought was very late and caused some inconvenience; especially as this was an 'executive room'. For us, this does have an impact on where we choose to stay as, for instance, another hotel (a chain I won't name) in Southampton which we stay at sometimes ensures the rooms are done much earlier. The breakfast is very good and we found the staff there very helpful. I'm sure we'll come again. I think this was my 3rd visit this year. Regards November 26, 2013

However I thought the price was a little steep for what it was. On arrival there was a hint of tobacco smell in my room. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good and Bad We arrived early Saturday evening about 17.15, there were two receptionists dealing with several people, when it was our turn we received our keys and I then enquired about Wi-Fi I was told you had to pay unless you were a gold or platinum member I asked how much as I had only recently joined and had not achieved those heady heights, the tariff was £5 for 1 hour or £16 for 24 hours, I was astounded, 1 hour being insufficient and 24 I was not going to be there that long, when I showed some surprise at the price the receptionist became a tad uppity with her take it or leave it attitude, it was fair to say I left it, we then proceeded to our room for a brief rest before we went out for the evening only to be disturbed by what sounded like some Football hooligans chanting and banging doors, this eventually died down and we went out. I spoke to reception about the furore and was assured all was in hand. The rest of the stay was a pleasant experience, and a good nights sleep was had and hearty breakfast, The only reason I was so disappointed about the Wi-Fi was I had recently stayed in Holiday Inns in Rotherham and Ramsgate where I had received it for free! Still it was a nice stay and it is a quiet part of Southsea. November 20, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A short walk saves £££££'s I thought I booked the Holiday Inn Express on Gun Wharf Quays, so was surprised to find I was in the Holiday Inn around the corner. It turned out the 10 minute walk was a minor hiccup and was actually a pleasure despite the cold. Very straightforward and easy to do. The Hotel itself was clean, busy and comfortable. We had to delay our check in, as we'd arrived early but our bags were taken in, leaving us to hit the shops etc. Once we'd booked in, we found our rooms to be clean and comfortable. Air con was available but we didn't use it. Beds were a bit bouncy but we had a good nights sleep. Hard and soft pillows were available, but if you're like my sister and need your own pillow for a good nights sleep, then take your own. Bar prices were a bit expensive and we found Raspberry Sambuca is not very nice. Over all a good stay and we'd probably use them again as the rooms were half the price of their sister hotel on GW Quays. Next time we're taking our swimming cozzies as they've a pool - one up on the Express. November 20, 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent all round service My friend and I stayed for a long weekend recently and found the hotel to be excellent in all areas. Having always stayed with a rival hotel chain before it was a welcome change. The only problem on arrival, as I arrived late on the Friday evening, was the parking but I was able to park for free just across from the hotel and was able to park on site the next morning. The staff were all extremely helpful and attentive and smiling through what I know was a very busy school holiday time. I will definitely stay with you again as I visit Portsmouth on a regular basis to visit my daughter who is a childrens' nurse at the Queen Alexandra hospital. November 11, 2013

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Unacceptable disabled facilities I reserved a disabled room for my 91 year old father who has some walking difficulties. The bathroom was large but he was unable to have a shower because it was over the bath and he couldn't get in it. The bedroom had wide doors but no other disabled facilities. It was a standard bed, which he had difficulty rising from. No grab rails in the room. I complained to reception and they advised all disabled rooms were the same in the hotel. Do not start at this hotel if you have any disabilities. November 6, 2013
