Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great hotel, great location! Spent 2 nights over August Bank Holiday weekend and really have nothing bad to say! Comfy beds, nice pool area, lovely bar - just what we needed for a relaxing short break. Icing on the cake was the very short stroll down to the sea, and a lovely Sunday afternoon walk to Spice Island for drinks in the sun then another short walk on to Gunwharf for dinner. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very helpful service My wife and I stayed at Holiday Inn, Portsmouth, prior to joining a cruise, and also to enable us to see the new Mary Rose museum. Hotel reception staff were exceptionally helpful regarding local information and directions to places of interest. They did their very best to ensure that we enjoyed our stay, allowing us to leave luggage on Sunday morning for collection later in the day. I can heartily recommend this hotel for people visiting Portsmouth. It is conveniently situated for the town, heritage dockyard and the international port. August 29, 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Uncomfortable bed only problem This is a well appointed hotel with smart rooms and public areas. The breakfast was of a good standard as was the evening meal. There could have been a better layout for the breakfast room as there were no clearly defined access routes to the buffet resulting in guests wandering 'ad hoc' between tables. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Unfortunately the bed was most uncomfortable being uneven and dipping towards the middle. Our request for a first floor room was granted which was appreciated. The location of the hotel was close to the sea front and a 10-15 minute walk to the harbour and Gunwharf shopping centre. There were adequate car parking spaces close to the hotel reception. Overall a most enjoyable stay in spite of the problem with the bed. Would certainly stay here again. August 24, 2013

The hotel is conveniently situated and we were able to walk to the seafront and to the many attractions the Historic Dock has to offer. Would definitely stay there again. August 24, 2013

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 Good position Rooms were tired and in need of refurbishing. Although we stayed for two nights there was insufficient space for two people to put clothes away for a longer stay. Two of the biggest irritations were the room was not cleaned until 2.30 p.m. on Sunday and there was a charge for wi-fi and for that reason I would not stay here again. On the plus side breakfast was very acceptable and the beach and transport is within easy walking distance. August 22, 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Some very good points but improvements needed We chose this hotel for its location within fifteen minutes walk to the centre of Portsmouth and a little further to the Naval Dockyard. Generally, we enjoyed our stay as we had a view of the Solent (as requested), the bedroom was adequate and breakfast was very good. We also enjoyed the swimming pool and jacuzzi for an hour late on Saturday afternoon. Staff at reception and at breakfast were excellent - friendly and efficient. Issues that might be addressed include the decor of the dining room which is very drab and lacking in any atmosphere; poor value on the dinner menu e.g. steak and kidney pie with good pastry but six tiny pieces of meat inside (four bits of kidney and two of steak) costing almost £15; rather chaotic and inefficient service at dinner. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A very enjoyable stay We have stayed intermittently over many years but now feel the hotel matches the former excellent ownership of Trusthouse Forte of years ago. We were greeted warmly; were delighted to have the permit for free on-road parking nearby as the hotel parking is limited. We had a very well presented room with pleasing outlook and on a very quiet floor - this during a busy August weekend. The restaurant coped well with large numbers and offered a broad menu range both at breakfast and dinner. Staff were attentive without being obsequious. And when we accidentally left a travelling alarm clock behind Housekeeping reported it and it was returned to us by post with minimum fuss and very promptly. August 21, 2013

Reception staff very polite but did not contact room staff for extra pillows and forgot to order daily paper. Room cleaning staff very helpful and friendly. Restaurant staff very helpful but breakfast would be nice to have a cafeterre of coffee instead of asking for a mug to be filled as when busy the staff are limited for time to serve. Lovely position of hotel so good for visiting Portsmouth but doubt would stay there again. Have stayed at other Holiday Inns which are great. August 20, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A lovely visit to Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight The hotel was very efficient and welcoming. We had free 24 hour parking on the road next to the hotel as the car park was full, but there were plenty of spaces so this wasn't a problem. Our room was quite large with 2 comfy chairs, a large bed and a sea view. We had opted for dinner, bed and breakfast, which was excellent value with plenty of choice. Service was quick and efficient. Drinks at the bar are slightly expensive and the wine is very expensive, but this is usual at most hotels. Breakfast was very nice, with a large choice and prompt service of drinks. The hotel is very close to the Isle of Wight Hovercraft, which also offer reduced price parking if you buy your car park ticket from them. August 20, 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by An excellent stay We booked a 2 night stay with our 2 grandchildren aged 6 and 4.We were given a friendly welcome at reception and our room was ready slightly before the normal access time. It was a large room with double bed and 2 single beds so much nicer than a made up couch and very clean and comfortable.We all had very good nights sleep. The highlight for the children was the swimming pool, set at a lovely temperature, and lots of room for them to play and practice their swimming. We had our evening meal in the hotel restaurant on our first night which was very enjoyable with a good choice of menu for us all to choose from. The children ate free which is a nice bonus. Breakfast was also good with plenty of choices and the children enjoyed making their own pancakes! Overall we had a lovely time and will certainly be going back again. Must mention I carelessly left some items of clothing behind but within 48 hours it was returned to me, a fabulous service. August 18, 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good value place to stay I have been staying here for two or three days a week for the past 6 weeks or so and have been very happy overall with the accommodation. I have stayed in a variety of the standard rooms over this time, even one for a disabled person when there was a glitch with my booking. Breakfast is lovely with plenty of choice., Reception staff are very friendly and smiley. The other staff in the breakfast room or bar are also very friendly and are happy to chat with you if they are not too busy., My only real issue is with the cost of WIFI. You can get it free in you join the IHG reward club, but as I travel for work my Company will not permit me too join the club which means I cannot take advantage of the free WIFI. I cannot justify the £5 per hour cost, especially as I only use my lap top for 30 mins morning and evening so that would cost £10 per day - £30 over the three days which is unacceptable., However, that is a small issue and overall I am very happy with the hotel and expect to continue to use them over the next few weeks. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Relaxing break Stayed at The Holiday Inn Portsmouth for 3 nights July 28th. Arrived at 3. 00pm to be told the room was not ready. The man on reception made every effort to have it made ready a.s.a.p. Our 1st time in Portsmouth and the reception staff were very good at directing us to certain places. Our room was good on the 4th floor with lovely views across the Solent to watch the ships coming and going. The staff at breakfast and dinner were exceptionally friendly and very obliging. The position of th hotel in relation to attractions is very good with most places about 10 minutes walk away. On the whole a very pleasant and friendly stay. August 15, 2013

Staff were very helpful and the room was superb and breakfast excellent. The Hotel was in a lovely area of the city with great evening views of the Spinnaker Tower etc. Would definitely stay again. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Location location location This is in a prime spot. Park the car and then explore. Southsea 5 mins away, gun wharf 10 mins. The room was a little small for an executive room, and the cleaner did not come until after 2 pm, so we told her not to bother as we were getting ready to go to a wedding. This really was not good enough. The breakfast was good but did get busy the later you left it. The drinks in the bar were on the pricy side. The pool was nice and not very busy at all. The taxi service from the hotel was very efficient. Great place to stay for a short break, the location is superb. August 11, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Clean and comfortable base for a sightseeing trip Executive Room was immaculately clean and well presented for the price. Bed was comfortable (unusually did not need to request extra pillows). Breakfast was excellent. Parking is a bit restricted but Reception gave us a permit for parking on the street right outside the hotel. My husband was impressed with the swimming pool/fitness suite. The only disappointment was the quality/price of the evening meal, which seemed rather expensive for the quality of the meal. Altogether a hotel we would happily return to and recommend. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Hotel, Staff are friendly, but still has room for improvement On the whole this is a good hotel. During my stay this week, the hotel had a bit of a refurb. Unfortunately the room I was allocated for this week, was not up to its usual Clean standard. The tiles had been re-grouted, but not wiped down properly. WHich meant I got white dust all over my arm during a shower. What annoyed me was I had to mention it Twice, before it was finally sorted. I do know that things do not always go perfectly, but when they are raised, they should be dealt with with out having to raise it again! My other moan, is that the restaurant could do with offering weekly specials, and get a grip on the stock list. To often they run out of things! Having said all that, the staff are always friendly, great me by name, and are always willing to chat, which is great fro the lone traveller like myself. (It does help I am a regular here) There is still room for improvement, but this is the best Chain hotel in Portsmouth. For that reason I will continue to use this hotel for my on going stays in Portsmouth August 7, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great place to stay stopped at this hotel because they gave us a good deal booked 4 room fri to sunday 7 people all family member . the hotel is only 5 mins walk from the sea front and about 15 mins walk to the main shopping area in the port . the rec staff were great rooms not ready when we arrived but we did turn up at about 12.30 . but no problem we left the cases in the car and took a walk down the seafront had something to eat came back about 4 o'clock all rooms now ready . some people said the rooms need updating on the reviews we looked at but take it with a pinch of salt . all the rooms we had were great well kept with flat screen tv ,tea & coffee in the room a/c with sea view. also you can use the gym & pool steam room for free which we did drinks and food in the hotel are well pricey but just down on the seafront is a pub restaurant and if you walk along the seafront you will find 3 more we sat outside and watched the sun go down all and all we had a great time all the staff at the hotel looked after us all and nothing was to much for them very helpful and we had a joke with them would i go back well yes i would and i would recommend this hotel to my friends. only one thing lets the hotel down is the parking the car park is too small for the amount of people staying there . what we done was to park the cars in the back car park and left them there all weekend and walked everywhere has everything is only 5 to 20 mins away. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Service Atrocious We stayed here in early July on the occasion of my son's wedding. The room was adequate and the hotel clean. We decided to use the dining room on the Friday night and was told there would be a 10 minute wait. 20 minutes later having not been called, we asked again and were told we could sit anywhere. It took an hour in total to serve us steak and chips. We were then asked if we wanted anything else and asked for mustard and salad dressing. This took a further ten minutes to arrive. On the Saturday morning we arrived for breakfast and ordered one tea and one coffee. Unfortunately I had to ask for a cup for the tea and a teaspoon since neither were provided. I was brought a mug which was twice the size of the teapot. Later we sat in the lounge and ordered coffee. This took half an hour to arrive, one cup at a time and was served the wrong way round. Needless to say we didn't bother to order breakfast on the Sunday. There was a total lack of organisation from presumably inexperienced and inadequate staff, especially considering that the hotel was fully booked August 5, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great location. We spent 2 nights at this Hoilday Inn and would defnitely like to return. It is very convenient for an enjoyable walk (about 15 minutes) to Gun Wharf Quays and the Historic Dockyard area and the reception staff were very helpful providing us with a map for directions and explaining the route to us when we arrived. It is in a very nice location with lots of green areas nearby and our first evening we enjoyed a walk to the sea, about 5 minutes away, with a local amusement park and crazy golf course. The breakfast was lovely, self service buffet, cooked almost to order, i.e just the right amount was cooked as needed so it wasn't standing around too long being kept warm, but there was always a constant supply of what you wanted. My only critiscism is of the speed of service of the hotel bar. My partner and I must have waited at least 10 to 15 minutes for a drink after our beach walk on the first evening and there weren't even that many customers in front of us. There was a shortage of staff serving and they had to keep running out the back to get clean glasses and then didn't have any chilled rose wine, but after seeing the price of a glass of wine, by the time they'd brought an unchilled bottle from out the back I'd decided I no longer wanted a glassof wine anyway! The next evening we decided to purchase a bottle on the way back to the hotel to drink in our room and it cost much less than a glass in the hotel and we didn't have to stand in a queue before we could sit down and enjoy it! Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Clean and Tidy We had a few days break in Portsmouth and on the whole the hotel and staff service was good. We felt that the bathroom facilities were a bit cramped and possibly ready for an overhaul. It wasn't possible to completely stop the water from disappearing from the sink whilst using it, even though the maintenance crew tried to free up the plug as soon as they came on duty. One evening we decided to have a drink in the bar and found it understaffed and a bit disorganised, having said that a couple of nights later more staff were on duty and things seemed to be running more smoothly.
