I stayed at this hotel in April and May 2013. The hallways need some work but once you step into the room it's spacious, clean, well appointed and very comfortable. The room service and front desk staff are extremely nice and helpful and the hotel is in an excellent location. Great value for the price and excellent breakfast too. I will definitely recommend this hotel

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by EdR13 Great stay in Shanghai
We spent ten nights at the Holiday Inn Great Wall and enjoyed an excellent stay! Although the hotel is often touted as a “business” hotel, we think it offers a great location for individuals traveling for pleasure. It’s just across the square from the Shanghai Railway Station and there is a metro station (Line 1, “Shanghai Railway Station”) just around the corner. It’s easy to get to all parts of the city – including key tourist sites – using the metro. You can access both airports (Pudong or Hongqiao) via the metro if you don’t mind making a transfer to Line 2. Alternatively, directly behind the hotel is an Airport Bus (bus no. 5) with service to Pudong International Airport. So, there’s great access to/from major transport centers as well as touring throughout the city.
The Holiday Inn has two wings and initially we arrived at the Plaza Wing by mistake (we arrived about 8:00PM and it was dark). The “buggy” (a golf cart) was sent over immediately to transport us and our luggage to the Great Wing (it’s a quick ride through the property’s underground parking lot). We checked in at the Executive Club and received a warm welcome. Due to our platinum status, we were upgraded to a beautiful two-room suite
Throughout our visit, we received wonderful service from all members of the Executive Club staff – both during the day and during the evening “happy hour.” Each was friendly, professional and made sure we had everything we could possibly need. Also, it was great for us that they all spoke excellent English and could assist with touring ideas, use of the metro, shopping tips, etc. We felt very “spoiled” when visiting the Club and that’s a wonderful experience! Our thanks go to Flora and her staff.
The only meals we ate at the hotel were breakfast in the Yue Garden Restaurant and the wonderful snacks offered during the evening happy hour. Our accolades to the chefs who prepare these delicious foods! At Yue Garden, there is a separate seating area for Priority Club members and this is a big plus if the hotel is full and the dining area is very busy. Also, the restaurant manager, Minnie, made sure we had everything we needed each morning.
As noted above, the happy hour snacks are delicious! The Club’s staff members replenish the dishes if they run low so there is always ample food for everyone. We also appreciate that we were able to make cocktails from top-quality liquor and mixers and we also were able to enjoy a good Chinese red wine.
In closing, we had an excellent stay and appreciate the service we received from everyone! We will highly recommend the property and we plan to return to the Holiday Inn Great Wall when we next return to Shanghai!

When we arrived the type of room we had booked months ahead wasn't available.
We had some communication problems (English language) with the reception and management.
I would only recommend this Holiday Inn to my friends as it's very close to Shanghai station.
We have stayed at this hotel several times before but we were disappointed this time.

Many thanks to Flora, Even, Mindy, Nicole and Lilly who took care of us extremely well. They always show a smile and try to fulfill ones wishes, even without expressing it. I had a lot of fun and always very much enjoyed the time I could spend in the lounge. For breakfast and for the Happy hour. They are really working hard and very professionel. Thanks again to all of them. I'm very much looking forward to accept their hospitality and care again

The F&B staff are good, pleasent and quick, but the front desk staff are rude, and need to be MUCH MORE WELCOMING AND POLITE.

I have stayed at Great Wall Wing.
Though the distance from Shanghai Station south side is about 5minutes walk, I felt it sorry that there was no hotel entrance facing to the Station's south square side.
My friend visited me while I was there, he also had a difficulty to find its entrance. (I had a same problem for the first time.)
It would be nice if any entrance or sign post will be made facing to Station's south square.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Lousiana991 american hotel communist style.
Restrooms on first floor near the elevators were "ugly".
At breakfast we were asked 3 times to tell them our room number.
Room was OK, but hotel-entrance has the flair of a USSR-Hotel in the 80's #I was in Moscow and Leningrade in this decade#.
Hotel is "somewhere" in Shanghai, it would better to book a hotel near the Bund.
and - the best is still to come ....
Front-desk employee told me that I have to give this hotel a 5-star rating in the questionnaire. Oh, Sorry, but I could not do that!

I stayed in The Great Wall Wing of the Holiday Inn near the Shanghai Train Station. Furnishing of room is rather aged but bearable. Stay throughout is okay and as I stayed in the club level, I was able to use the club lounge where service is warm and personal.
My stay was ruined on a weekend when some rooms were used by a wedding party on a Saturday. The agony of living with constant opening, closing and banging of doors for the entire night begins! Shouting from the running children from room to room and also from adults were ringing throughout the entire floor that overwhelmed even the volume of my TV set. This goes on the entire night!
Overall, if you don't mind the aged furnishing in the room and the average friendly service this hotel provides and accessibility is your priority, this your hotel to stay

Besides the great location (right by the Shanghai Railway Station) and the reasonable price, the staff is incredibly helpful. They were very friendly, they patiently and thoroughly answered all my questions, and they helped me purchase multiple train tickets and even a replacement cell phone. I will come back!

The hotel is located extremely close to Shanghai Train station. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are clean and the staff is very friendly.
Since the price compared to Holiday Inn express is double, one would expect the rooms and the facilities to be two times better.
Rooms need to be renovated as they show their age ( electric appliances, doors, furniture). One big con is the non existence of Wifi in the rooms.

I would like to thank all the girls who work in the Club Lounge. They
take great care when I check in. They also do a very good job making sure everything during the evening snacks are of good quality and they are always helpful if you have any issues.
I also would like to thank the Concierge Manager for always making sure the taxi knows where to take me and make sure the taxi drivers don't try to rip me off taking the tourist route to business locations.

STravels First Stay - OK...close to train station
Hotel is very close to the Shanghai Train station (North) along with the subway line (#1). Both are 5 min. walk from the hotel. The first room had seen better days, it wasn't bad, just a worn. Had to change rooms due to AC not working properly, second room had same issue. Thankfully, the second room was cool enough for me to sleep so I decided not to make another room change. Staff was accommodating and friendly.

Sometimes, during rush hour, getting a taxi may take a bit.
Breakfast is very reasonable.
Overpriced.

If you're travelling through Shanghai by train, it doesn't get better than this hotel. It's literally in front of Shanghai's railway station. But apart from it's location, there's nothing special about this hotel. I reserved a 'superior room', but it was still so small that the arm-rests of the desk chair needed to be folded away, because otherwise there was no space to walk around the room. I would only stay here again on a overnight stop-over.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by STEVECCH71 Good Location But Need To Be Careful
There are 2 different Holiday Inn in the same location, No. 585 and No. 285.
I booked online for No. 585, but able to check-in the No. 285 Holiday Inn. Only known when walking around the hotel.
Anyway, both hotel is located just in front of the Shanghai Train Station. If you are going to Suzhou, Wuxi and Nanjing, you can take the China High Sped train from the station. It only speed 5 minutes walking from Hotel to the Train Station.
Cost is reasonable for hotel in Shanghai. Breakfast is good...
Overall experience is good... as it keep the standard of Holiday Inn.

I've been going to this hotel for years now and it is still a very efficient, clean and well located place! Last time I was there on business I forgot something important in the safe and the manager didn't waist any time sending a staff all the way to the airport to give me this document!
Great service... thanks again and see you soon!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by KnowMyHotel Overrated and shames the Holiday Inn brand.
This hotel is at the South side of the Shanghai Railway Station and I bet most people stay here for the convenience to the station.. There is a Holiday Inn Express at the North side of the station and costs less. I selected this hotel because it is a tad closer to the Shanghai Metro station than the Express, so it would make getting around a little easier. I was also expecting a room/facility that is better than Holiday Inn Express but lower than Crowne Plaza (all 3 belong to the same chain). There is also an Intercontinental across the street, but I think that one is being rebranded out of the chain.
My check-in experience should have been a good indicator to me for the quality of my stay - a bonafide poor. I booked a non-smoking superior room, which should have a king or queen size bed. My Priority Club profile also has non-smoking marked as well. However, the hotel ignore all of that and placed me in a smoking room. The smell was so bad that I couldn't stay there more than a couple of minutes. I kindly asked the hotel to honor the reservation and move me to a non-smoking room but the front desk said they didn't have any non-smoking room unless I am willing to downgrade to a smaller guest room with twin bed. I asked why when they ran their daily Priority Club check in report, that they didn't hold a non-smoking room for me given I am a platinum member but the front desk simply said I am out of luck. I had to turn off my politeness and push for a manager to resolve this issue. When a manager looked into this, he mysteriously found a non-smoking room with a queen size bed. This process burn up nearly an hour during check-in. I simply can't understand why the hotel would treat their priority club guest so poorly, especially a top-tier Platinum member. This is very disappointing. I shouldn't have to escalate to get a non-smoking room when I booked it as such.
I am a long time Priority Club Platinum member and had countless stays in the chain, This Holiday Inn is simply not at the normal quality, especially for Asia Pacific where the Intercon chain is doing a generally good job at keeping up with high standards. But was I wrong or what! The room is exactly the same size if not smaller than the newer HI Express - there is nothing better about this hotel than HI Express. They renovated the room but did a horrible job with the bathroom. There is NO counter space in the bathroom (at least not in the room I was given). All you have a ledge above the sink and above the toilet -- with most of the space taken by hotel signage There is very little space for guest's own personal care items. The ledges are also slanted forward so things tend to roll off or tip over the ledges. This was so bad that my contact lens case almost fell right into the toilet. Fortunately, I reacted very fast and caught the lens case before it dropped into the toilet. From there on, I kept the toilet lid shut the entire stay but continue to have things fell onto the lid. The bathroom space is soooo tight, that they should not put a tub in the it. They are better off turning it into a shower-only bathroom like HI Express. The hair dryer in the bathroom didn't work and I had to use my own. But, there was no electrical outlet in the bathroom for appliances (only one for low-current shavers). I had to blow dry my hair in the hall way and constantly go back into the bathroom to use the mirror. Strange enough, the wall between the bathroom and the bedroom is made out of a ceiling to floor clear glass, giving you a non-stop review of the toilet and sink - as if I needed to be constantly reminded how small the bathroom is.
The closet was also super small, and it could barely fit 2 sets of outfits. i had to keep most of my clothes in my suite case and swap in and out my clothes on a daily basis. Because the room is so small, one of the nightstand is basically pushed against the closest door, which makes the daily swap of clothes even that much more difficult.
The paid wired internet is also very unreliable, constantly dropping connection, to a point that I couldn't maintain the VPN connection to my company long enough to do any work and had to go get a China Unicom 3G SIM so I can tether my iPhone for internet, which was more reliable.
The hotel has a gym, which is one of the reasons I picked it. Unfortunately, the equipment is dated and not well maintained. The wires and weight plates on the multi-station was so rusted, a 30lb setting felt more like 150lbs and the movement was not fluid - a very likely thing to cause sports injury during workout. This is the only item that may be quasi better than HI Express, where most of HI Express properties in China does not have a gym.
I would have given this hotel 1-star but bumped it to 2-star because of the complementary access to the Executive Lounge and other perks they provided to their Platinum members. They provide a welcome drink plus allowing you to use the drinks free of charge from the mini-bar. Sadly, the housekeeping staff never bothered to refill the mini-bar drinks. But again, this is a fluffed feature - you could have simply gone up to the Lounge and had the same item. The free breakfast and soft drinks did make my life easier during the stay. That said, any customer could go to HI Express at a lower rate and get a better room with free breakfast, so this hotel is really not that attractive from so many angles.
Talk about lacking of good service or common sense, a manager decided to call me to see how my stay was and if he could have done anything - but on the last day I am checking out?! If he truly cared, he would have called on the guest stay's 2nd day, not last day...

Gman123 Average experience, at best.
Unexpected for Holiday Inn property. Fairly old, rooms were very old, smelled bad and lacked any differentiators.
As a PC Platinum and Intercon Ambasssdor member, i requested a non-smoking quiet room. i was put in a "smoking" room next to the elevator--go figure. I went to the front desk to tell them i asked for a No Smoking room, and they told me it was. Then i asked why is there an ashtray with matches on the table. The front desk staff just told me it was a mistake and assured me i was in a No-smoking room. obviously, he was very wrong. See pictures.
I reserved an Executive room and was upgraded to a Sutie--that was not that appealing. Old futniture and fixtures, old TVs. Bathroom reeked of bad moldy odor.
overall, not bad but not good either. The price was cheap---and now i understand why.
Would probably not stay there again.
