Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Isobel's granny I would prefer to stay at the holiday inn express next door
Stayed here very cheaply as i was originally booked at the holiday inn express next door. (Which was subsequently closed for the christmas break).
I was disappointed.
There was no wifi available in my room and the radio was not available via the TV.
The room needed a proper clean, particularly the carpet and bathroom floor.
This had all the faded grandeur of an old fashioned English Station hotel, Give me a modern hotel any time.

Just stayed for one night whilst visiting family in Sheffield. We were 2 adults and 2 teenage children staying in one room but plenty of space and comfort. Excellent beds and very impressed with choice of pillows ! Super bathroom facilities too. Staff really helpful as we arrived an hour or so before check in time but they happily arranged for us to go to our room and brought us extra tea and coffee cups. Breakfast was fantastic - great service and great choice of food. We really liked the grandeur of the hotel - big staircases, sash windows, heavy curtains etc. Overall we felt it was very good value and a great start to our Christmas holiday!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 Enjoyable Stay
Stayed for five nights given attendance at a week long course held within the hotel premises.
Very comfortable and spacious clean rooms with all necessary services catered for.
Queen size beds provide for a comfortable nights sleep.
Hotel was a little difficult to find at night and so could benefit from improved signage at road level (as to those customers not familiar with Sheffield only the Holiday Inn Express Hotel is visible from the approach).
Just three minor 'niggles' that are worth mentioning:
1) Whilst it is appreciated that winter does bring with it coughs and colds, having the restaurant staff continually cough near food was a little worrying.
2) The tea and coffee facilities provided in each room was adequate, but the accompaniment of a couple of biscuits would have been nice.
3) Personally I don't agree with a hotel applying a £5.00 per day parking charge for customers paying to stay the night.....and so this is one factor that would sway my decision for any future booking.
4) Thankfully I packed my own backup alarm clock as I only received 1 out of 5 requested alarm calls that was requested via the hotel reception. This wasn't too much of an issue .....but could have been!
In summary...a lovely Victorian Hotel that is well worth a visit!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by hpsd Nice classic hotel with real history
In the world of modern off the shelf hotels, it was a refreshing change to arrive at a hotel that has some real history. It is a listed building, and built for a railway that no longer exists. Where the station was is now a modern extension to the building.
Executive room in the original building was very nice, and spacious, especially the bathroom, and fully up to date. Lounge bar was a majestic hall with stained glass celings, with character that no new build can emulate.
Food was good and reasonably priced, and staff helpful.
My only minor gripe is that this hotel is located to close proximity to some major roads, and being a listed building is not double glazed, instead having traditional sash windows. This means that you can hear traffic noise late at night and early in the morning. So, if you're a particularly light sleeper like me, it might be worth specifically requesting a quiet room.

It's really great to see the Royal Victoria in mostly resplendent condition after its refurbishment. I remember seeing this place looking very, very unloved many years ago.
I was given an executive room, which was huge, newly refurbished and beautifully decorated.
Some public areas of the hotel still look a little tired, but in an old place like this there is always somewhere that needs attention. It didn't detract from the stay.
Breakfast was the usual Holiday Inn buffet fare, with friendly, cheery staff.
A very enjoyable stay in a lovely old building.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Hayley83 Expensive for service
Room was noisy and cold wasn't happy that the price didn't include breakfast I stayed at the holiday inn express in Gateshead the day after which was £15 cheaper included breakfast and carpark was free. Don't think I'd stay here again was to cold and noisy for me.
Also difficult to get to post code doesn't lead to hotel when using satnav.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Pompeyowl That's what I call service!
I stayed on the Tuesday and returned on the Friday this time with my son. They warned me on Tuesday they didn't have any twin or two bed rooms but would try their best! Well I arrived late Friday, and with surprise they had split a double bed and made it into two singles. They could have just said sorry but no they made the effort.
The staff are always very helpful and rooms clean and comfortable. Hotel is full of character and is being refurbished but it doesn't disturb a nice stay. If you want modern and clinical stay at the Express down the road! If you want service and character this is for you!

Friendly reception staff. I was given a smoking room however there was no problem changing it, though staff explained it would be noisy. This indeed was the case, we listened to the Abba tribute band till 1am and the crescendo of thank you for the music. Awoke very tired!
Hotel looked as though it had seen better days, with marks on the carpet and fraying bed.

Have stayed here many times. As usual the staff were so friendly and helpful - staff means reception, housekeeping, restaurant - i.e. All staff!
I had an issue of water not hot enough. Reception were aware of an issue and explained what had gone wrong, when it happened and how long for. Good communication between different departments which often is not seen in hotels

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Aninspectorcalls Great venue, indifferent service
This is a wonderful 19th century building with extraordinary reception rooms and comfortable bedrooms. The breakfast is good and the staff on duty in the restaurant are friendly and efficient. The dinner service is not so good and the food is over-priced for the quality on offer. The dining room was too dimly lit to read the menus when we arrived and a guest at a neighbouring table agreed with us. We asked for the lighting level to be turned up slightly, but we had to ask to speak to a senior manager before it was finally agreed to do this. The soup was tepid and had to be returned for re-heating.
I had booked two executive rooms (for myself and a colleague) for five nights. On checking in, I was informed that wi-fi would cost a considerable sum for 24 hours. This was not mentioned in the publicity, which simply referred to high-speed broadband in every room. When my colleague checked in, he was offered wi-fi free of charge for his whole stay. When I challenged the charge the next day, I was also offered free wi-fi. Whilst this resolved the issue, it is tedious to have to complain and it should be recognised that wi-fi is a necessity like hot water for business customer. It should be part of the package, not an extra.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by melics22 room for a night away
We stayed for only one night with the family (4), the room was very clean, warm. Lovely size and comfortable beds. The staff was very helpful. Breakfast was nice too. Felt relaxed. Kettle in the room, that was not filled with water and we were not sure if we could use the bathroom water so we used out bottled water to fill up. Limited choice of teas but it was enough for us. Toilet is a bit low, which was great for the kids, but sink is very high... These are minor things though. We had a lovely time. Kids loved it, especially because of the great big TV.
I would recommend it to anyone, we will come back again.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Chris19 Recommended but with a few reservations
We took advantage of an excellent offer which gave us a one night stay, 3 course dinner for two with a bottle of wine, full English breakfast and tickets for Chatsworth House for £99, which we thought was very good value. We opted to add on a couple more nights so we could visit friends. The rates were still competitive.
The hotel is sited with a couple of other hotels on Victoria Quays which is just outside the city centre - about 10 minutes walk away. It is an attractive Victorian building with a grand central staircase. The receptionist was extremely helpful and informative highlighting a map of places we might wish to visit. Parking is £5 a day which I understand, given that city centre workers might abuse free parking. There is no free wi-fi even in the public areas, which is disappointing but you can pay £7.50 a day for it or go next door to the Holiday Inn Express where it is apparently free! Logic??
The dinner was excellent - we really enjoyed it. The staff were a little inexperienced but very friendly and helpful. The receptionist allocated us a room in the supposedly quieter new wing of the building so we would not be near the weekend functions that were taking place. However, unfortunately the rooms have such heavy doors that they slam very noisily - it sounded like the prison doors slamming in Porridge! And the rooms shook! That, and the lack of free wifi, are the only drawbacks. Otherwise it is a nice hotel reasonably convenient for Sheffield city centre.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Tad60 Mixed bag
An older Victorian hotel with some pleasant lounges and a good restaurant. However, the gym needs attention, some items need repair (exercise bike has parts hanging off) and the bathrooms have a modern wash stand in them that is so big that it is hard to use because the toilet basin is in the way. A case of style over substance here. Road noise with sash windows mean that a good night's sleep is not guaranteed. I now sleep at the Holiday Inn Express next door and use the gym and restaurant here. Given that they are both owned by the same company I guess they are not bothered.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Snazzy21 Lovely but a bit confusing
The hotel itself is beautiful, really nice building and the staff I came across were lovely but there was a hiccup on my bill when I was checking out which took a while to be rectified, eventually it was and I paid but no apology was given. Our room didn't have breakfast but we were allowed to add it to our bill, but when my friend came down and wanted to add breakfast to her room she was told she wasn't allowed..? I would stay again though!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Jules16 Building with character
My husband and I have stayed here twice and enjoyed it. The breakfasts are excellent, also the staff who are very helpful. The room on our second visit was not as big but we did get it from an offer on 'Groupon' so at reduced rate. Its an old building with lots of character and would stay again. I will keep looking for the offers as they are well worth it.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mumofmonkeys Friendly and helpful staff made for a comfortable stay
We stayed here for a long weekend and found the hotel to be clean and comfortable. The staff were very accommodating. Our daughter had an ear infection while we were there and we needed a few bits for her. The following day one of the receptionists was thoughtful enough to ask after her. We'd definitely stay here again.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Andrew76sd Lovely old hotel let down by terrible food
Great old hotel building, rooms, parking etc are all good. Reception staff are great.
The food is not good though, particularly the breakfast. I stay here quite often with work, and am giving up. The breakfast is simply awful, poor quality food, even the cold selection is bad. No granola, no berries etc and a miserable selection of yoghurt. There is no comparison with Holiday Inn Hull or Jesmond (Newcastle) in terms of food quality.
Last week when I went for breakfast there was no fried egg, no scrambled egg, no orange juice, no white bread. I'm sure they would have got more if I asked but who has time to wait?

I was recommended this hotel by a colleague who had stayed a week or so before - what a great recommendation! From the welcomes at the desk, the standard and cleanliness of the room and perfect breakfast offering (in a lovely dining room) all round I was very impressed.
This hotel will be my first choice when I next need to stay over in Sheffield.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Zo68 Love this hotel!
Staff coped well considering they had a VERY full hotel with karate champs; swimming teams, a 50th going on over the weekend - 11/10 for them.
My only little niggles, was have stayed here a few times, and standard twin rooms are far bigger than the double execitive, which I paid more for.
Getting to the hotel confuses me everytime, however this is down to the council changing road plans; signage etc...

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Kiwi338 Quiet and charming ... Victorian-era quaint
An interesting old hotel that has been updated successfully without losing its old-world charm. Staff were obliging and professional; food was good; the room was spacious and comfortable. Mattresses were showing some age, but that is the only minor complaint.
Overall, a pleasant stay.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Tracsouth Great room and excellent food
First stay and would definitely return! Used the hotel as an overnight stay for my son's swimming gala at Ponds Forge. Beautiful building and lovely interior! Booked the room online and didn't realise breakfast wasn't included. Not a problem as we paid after breakfast on the way out to the pool. However, we realised in consulting with fellow swim club members that they had paid at reduced rate for breakfast (i.e. £9.50 rather than £12.50). We queried this on our return to the hotel to collect our car. We were told that had we pre booked breakfast the previous evening, we would have paid the £9.50 rate. At no point during check in , were we offered this option! Surely the check in staff could have mentioned this rather than simply informing us what hours breakfast was actually served. Apparently our children should have also eaten at a reduced rate in the bar, again we were not informed of this. Disappointing!!

First stay here and it will not be the last. Wonderful old building , large comfortable room and excellent restaurant.. So different from run-of-the-mill modern hotels and a real pleasure to stay here.
Only negative is that I never approve when an hotel forces a customer to pay for the privilege of parking their car on their own private car park. Why not make it free, and add £5 to the room rate?

Stayed two nights, everything was to a very good standard but the room was incredibly warm for the second night complained and had to sign a disclaimer so they could unscrew the catches on the window which made a huge difference. Second nights sleep was much more pleasent.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by shippers Great period hotel
Being a business man that stays in lots of hotels I was pleasantly surprised with my stay at the Holiday In Sheffield. I booked on the internet and so was expecting a modern corporate and soulless place however it turned out to be a magnificent old Victorian railway hotel, the station apparently has long since been relocated. The inside still retains its original architectural glories too. lovely high ceilings, paneling, old mahogany bars and large brass chandeliers. My room was spacious, with a large desk ideal for spreading out and working and very pleasantly decorated in a suitably period design. the bathroom was a treat modern with a big bath for a long soak. I couldn't be bothered walking into town and so ate in the hotel restaurant and again I was surprised. I had a really tasty roast duck with seasonal veg and I was so glad I gave Nando's a miss.
Staff were very courteous and attentive and all in all I would recommend this lovely old fashioned Hotel to anyone. Its not you average Holiday Inn.
