on staying several times at this hotel and although it's not the best or cleanest that I've stayed at but I do enjoy the location the grandeur of the hotel and most importantly that you have such a friendly staff member in Bev.
I have to once again say what a pleasure it has been coming down in the morning to be welcomed into the breakfast room by Bev, she is an amazingly happy and friendly person and makes the effort to speak to all your guests. She is a credit to IHG and your hotel in Sheffield. I would also like to add that she to me is like an ambassador for the hotel and other staff members could learn so much from her in the happy stakes and how to deal with guests.
it's all about making guests feel special and Bev does that in abundance.

Totally surprised with the size of room, the hotel had bags of character and felt like a stately home. The food both in the evening and morning was excellent and well presented. Would definitely recommend a visit. Great value and excellent quality...

A great stay at the hotel for my god daughters 21st Birthday party. Food and DJ were excellent. A great night was had by all.
The hotel's heritage has been beautifully preserved and stands as a classic railway hotel.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by kusun23 Lovely hotel with warm welcome
When we checked in we had such a lovely receptionist and duty manager, both made us so very welcome.
Room was just lovely clean with everything one need in a hotel room.
It was central and just a short drive from city centre. We went out for dinner in Leopold Square. It was a short drive from the hotel.
Over all we had quite a pleasant stay.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 Great room and helpful friendly staff
stayed two nights July while moving son across Sheffield to new flat, both nights all or one of us were dining really late but the staff couldn't have been more helpful and the meals were great. Room was a good size, nicely equipped and decorated - great bathroom. Good variety of drinks at the bar and reasonable prices for this class of hotel. Really good and varied breakfast buffet.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by ITbagman You can almost feel the history
You drive past the concrete box hotels stacked high on the old station approach road, but then you see the proud Royal Victoria in front of you on the left. It was built as a station hotel in the mid 1800's when building wasn't done at the cheapest and nastiest level possible as it is nowadays. You park on what was Platform 1 of the old Great Central Railway Victoria station.
As you go in the hotel, if you think the reception area is impressive, ask to be shown the Grand Ball Room and the dining room. The ceilings are at least 30 feet tall, and have sculpted and finely painted decor. The landings are wide with impressive staircases sweeping up to them (there is of course a lift, but just try the stairways).
The restaurant area is delightful and you can almost feel the history of the generations of elegant travelers who have gone before. The ground floor boasts pictures of the hotel when a young future queen visited and pictures of magnificent old steam trains waiting at the platforms to whisk the travelers north or south to their destinations.
If you prefer the functionality of a new build concrete box hotel room then that's fine. But if you want to feel a part of history and marvel at the way things used to be, stay at the Royal Victoria. Perhaps you'll get a sense of times past as I did. I only wish I could have stayed longer....

We arrived in Sheffield in a major downpour and tried to find the HI with the postcode given on the website (S7 etc). We drove round and round the same roads and roundabouts several times, we could see the hotel but couldn't get to it. Finally in desperation I called the hotel and was given a different postcode beginning with S1. Holiday Inn how can we get to you with the wrong postcode? Anyway we finally arrived and were efficiently checked in, the room was large with a recently updated bathroom. We had dinner in the restaurant, served by very friendly staff, in fact we encountered very friendly staff during our entire stay. Both of the bars are need of a bit of refurbishment though. Overall we had a good stay in Sheffield and would stay again if we were in the area.

Staying at Royal Victoria Holiday Inn in Sheffield is a privilege. It is a beautifully preserved Victorian hotel that is steeped in history, with guests including Oscar Wilde and Queen Victoria and a string of royals etc. since. The common parts are magnificent. Our room was fabulous. The staff were not stuffy but very friendly and helpful at all times. The buffet breakfast was perfect. Can thoroughly recommend.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Robbie 1 excellent stay
We booked a 2 night stay whilst visiting the area.As a Holiday Inn member I received a good rate and an executive room which was very clean and comfortable. We had a very good dinner in the restaurant the first night. Staff were courteous and helpful and we would certainly stay here again if visiting Sheffield. My one criticism was finding the access road to the hotel. We do not have a sat nav, so some extra signage would come in handy for those who do not possess Sat Navs.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Davy45 Avoid this hotel in summer
This hotel had no air conditioning merely one inadequate fan and a restricted window opening. we were given a second fan but the combined effect was inadequate. On complaining I was told the problem was the result of the building having a preservation order and so air conditioning could not be installed! The temperature of the room affected our whole experience. We chose this hotel for a special visit; we should have looked at other hotels in the area - there are plenty to choose from.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by bizLF72 Ideal location but dated decor
This hotel is an ideal location for Sheffield city centre. The staff and service are excellent. I had an executive room but it was below the standard expected. The decor in the room is very dated, although I appreciate this is an old hotel they seem to have gone for a nursing home theme in their rooms !
The bedrooms would benefit from Air Conditioning as it was extremely hot.
Ask for a room facing away from the A61 as well as it can be noisy. The room I was in had a big gap at the top of the sash window which would not shut.

Can you please pass on my sincere gratitude to Bev who does an exceptional job serving breakfast and caring for the customers. Bev is a ray of sunshine in the morning with a constant smile on her face and always makes the time in her busy day to stop for a chat and asking about your day, week etc. She is a credit to your company, a lovely sincere human being and one of the main reasons I come back and stay at your hotel.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Fin@work Nice Staff good service but no way to print any thing
I enjoyed the stay at Sheffield however I needed to print off some tickets. There was no business suite not even a single PC I could use. Although the wireless inrternet was working the wired was down and so the staff could not print it for me either.
Went to the holiday inn express next door same issue. I would get a resilient connection to the internet and also add a couple of PC with printer for guest use.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Currymonster Great stay, so well looked after
I stayed here again on business a short while ago. I was hugely impressed. I was welcomed very warmly by the receptionist, my booking was all perfect, breakfast the next day was excellent and the WiFi perfect but more than this, the little things made this such a great stay. The fan had been switched on in my room prior to my arrival which meant the room was beautifully cool, the receptionist in the morning rang me a couple of minutes after my automated alarm call to make sure the call had worked - things like this raise the hotel from great to exceptional. I have definitely found my business hotel of choice and cannot wait to be back. 1st rate and highly recommended.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by D&P4 relaxing stay
Lovely big, light room. Some traffic noise in the morning, but acceptable for a city centre location.
Our package included a bottle of wine, which we had to ask for, but quickly sorted.
Surprised the restaurant didn't have a black pepper mill, but a large bowl of gound black pepper produced from the the kitchen.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mario2 Great atmosphere
Very good, it seems sort of going back into the time, but with very comfortable bed and modern bathroom. The stairs are impressively beautiful.
However, internet should be free, without limits and the window should open a bit more!
Though it should not be a problem in summer time, the lack of air conditioning should be signaled.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Currymonster Going downhill, such a shame
Stayed here on business, have stayed before. Used to be excellent but going downhill. Wifi in room so poor as to be unusable, fan didn't work, breakfast only average and one receptionist excellent, one unattentive. I am looking for a hotel to stay in on a fairly regular basis and had hoped it would be here. Now I am not sure. Such a shame and hope things can be rectified.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It's possibly one of the older buildings but it is in very good order and we found the room was clean and spacious. We had 2 double beds which meant my wife and I and our 2 teenage boys got a good sleep. Breakfast was fantastic!

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by JimSW Overall not bad, but it ended on a sour note
I normally book the Holiday Inn Express next door, but decided to give the Holiday Inn a go, having not tried it for a while. My first room was nice but smelled very strongly of fresh paint. The receptionist was excellent in finding me another room with no qualms.
The second room was excellent, lovely bathroom and spacious. However, hard to find any sockets near the bed. Note to all hotel keepers, especially in older properties. Sockets near a table away from the bed are no good. People use phones and tablets and want sockets near the bed. As it turned out, there were two sockets behind the headboard. You literally had to pull whole bed away from the wall to use them. How tricky would it be to put an extension so that the socket is near the bedside table? This is not unique to this property, but is common in many older hotels. Needs sorting out.
This stay would have got a good, rather than an average if it hadn;t been for the final kicker. I am a platinum rewards club member. I elected to have the points instead of the free drink and was duly given a voucher for 500 points. I tried to redeem it this week. The voucher had already been used!! How tacky is that... I can only imagine that a customer left it in the room and they have recycled it!! I know it is only 500 points, but it is totally naff and for that reason, they are downgraded to average!!

Having stayed at many hotels in Sheffield, I found this one comfortable except for the road noise as wee needed to keep the window open for ventilation as it was rather warm. It's just a lovely old building that takes you back in time. Close enough to town centre

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by frequent family user hotel overall
Its a really nice hotel, look into the history of the hotel when you arrive its facinating.
Staff are really friendly most of the time, and very helpful.
the suite we stayed in unfortuantly smelt musty and of cigarette smoke, yet when booked on line, we booked a suite non smoking. we were able to undo all the windows and this soon dissapeared, may not be the case in winter.
restraunt staff are really friendly, food is usually plentiful (unfortunatly not on this stay)and taste is excellent. It is interesting when you stay more than 1 night if you order the same meal on both nights how the presentation and content changes each night ( we do have a laugh about this when we stay)
Only thing that is really missing is a swimming pool.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Shipley Frequent visitors to an interesting Hotel
Over the years we have been a frequent visitor to the Royal Victoria hotel and really appreciate the friendly and very helpful attitude of all the staff. Being an architect, I particularly value the great architecture of this lovely building and although there have been a lot of improvement to the fabric of this building the owners managed to do this tastefully and in keeping with the property. The bedrooms are well appointed and spacious and the on suites are very clean and well designed. At our last visit my wife and I had a very interesting conversation with the owner of the hotel who told us all about the history of the hotel. We love visiting Yorkshire as there is so much to see; my wife and I particularly enjoys visiting Bronte Parsonage, Harewood House, Castle Howarth and Chatsworth House which we can highly recommend.
