Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Hotel We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It's possibly one of the older buildings but it is in very good order and we found the room was clean and spacious. We had 2 double beds which meant my wife and I and our 2 teenage boys got a good sleep. Breakfast was fantastic! June 25, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Overall not bad, but it ended on a sour note I normally book the Holiday Inn Express next door,but decided to give the Holiday Inn a go, having not tried it for a while. My first room was nice but smelled very strongly of fresh paint. The receptionist was excellent in finding me another room with no qualms. The second room was excellent, lovely bathroom and spacious. However, hard to find any sockets near the bed. Note to all hotel keepers, especially in older properties. Sockets near a table away from the bed are no good. People use phones and tablets and want sockets near the bed. As it turned out, there were two sockets behind the headboard. You literally had to pull whole bed away from the wall to use them. How tricky would it be to put an extension so that the socket is near the bedside table? This is not unique to this property, but is common in many older hotels. Needs sorting out. This stay would have got a good, rather than an average if it hadn;t been for the final kicker. I am a platinum rewards club member. I elected to have the points instead of the free drink and was duly given a voucher for 500 points. I tried to redeem it this week. The voucher had already been used!! How tacky is that... I can only imagine that a customer left it in the room and they have recycled it!! I know it is only 500 points, but it is totally naff and for that reason, they are downgraded to average!! Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by hotel overall Its a really nice hotel,look into the history of the hotel when you arrive its facinating. Staff are really friendly most of the time, and very helpful. the suite we stayed in unfortuantly smelt musty and of cigarette smoke, yet when booked on line, we booked a suite non smoking. we were able to undo all the windows and this soon dissapeared, may not be the case in winter. restraunt staff are really friendly, food is usually plentiful (unfortunatly not on this stay)and taste is excellent. It is interesting when you stay more than 1 night if you order the same meal on both nights how the presentation and content changes each night ( we do have a laugh about this when we stay) Only thing that is really missing is a swimming pool. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Frequent visitors to an interesting Hotel Over the years we have been a frequent visitor to the Royal Victoria hotel and really appreciate the friendly and very helpful attitude of all the staff. Being an architect, I particularly value the great architecture of this lovely building and although there have been a lot of improvement to the fabric of this building the owners managed to do this tastefully and in keeping with the property. The bedrooms are well appointed and spacious and the on suites are very clean and well designed. At our last visit my wife and I had a very interesting conversation with the owner of the hotel who told us all about the history of the hotel. We love visiting Yorkshire as there is so much to see; my wife and I particularly enjoys visiting Bronte Parsonage, Harewood House, Castle Howarth and Chatsworth House which we can highly recommend. However we had a room (228) which over looked the front Which was noises due to the traffic but was made a lot worse Due to a party and who had no consideration for guests with the Noise when leaving the hotel. However this of course was out Of the control of the hotel staff. We will go back again but would request a room at the back of the Hotell Very good breakfast and polite staff May 27, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Enjoyable break This break was booked Christmas 2013 so was a little surprised on our arrival to be told that the room that we had been booked into may cause disturbance to our sleep because of two events taking place in the room under ours. An alternative was offered and shown to us - a little disappointing because even though the room was more than adequate it wasn't as nice as the one booked but for the sake of a good night's sleep it was worth changing. We were told this was a downgrade and our bill would be amended to show that. On settlement of our bill at the end of our stay the bill hadn't been amended so I had to ask for this to be done - the girl on reception reluctantly took £10 off each night of our stay. No other information was given at the desk on our arrival such as breakfast times, location of services but I thought there is normally an information folder in the room so this didn't concern me too much - no such information in the room!! Also noticed that there wasn't any fire evacuation information in the room, usually on the back of the door. I mentioned this to reception and was told that this is checked every day and it was there!! Breakfast was adequate, not the best I have eaten. Restaurant food was good but was a little put off that the server's shirt was dirty. Overall it was an adequate stay but would probably never stay there again. Thank you. May 22, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Friendly hotel, not what you expect. I have stayed here a couple of times. Location good for town. Not far from the ice rinks but you do have to drive. Friendly staff. There was a wedding on this time so we weren't able to use the bar or watch the cup final downstairs. But I guess the hotel has to put those guests first! I like the building very much, it has lots of character. It's old so no air con and quite warm in the rooms. Comfortable bedrooms, a little outdated but in keeping with the building. Bathrooms are nice but the shower screen is difficult to navigate if you want to put the plug in for a bath. I like this hotel very much, it's not plush but very nice. I will be staying there again. Afternoon tea was served in restaurant, selection of sandwiches and cakes, lovely relaxing atmosphere. First night we were booked in for 3 course meal which was enjoyable and could not fault. Plenty of choice for breakfast, help yourself buffet. Room comfortable and clean, room service good. Hotel is a 10 min walk back into city and tram services. Overall we enjoyed our stay and incl trip to Chatsworth House. May 17, 2014

A nice location close to city centre (about 10 minutes walk) and good signage on roads to follow hotel site's directions by car. Despite being an older property from the grand old age of hotels the room was well enough sound insulated to cut out almost all of the traffic noise from the busy road running by. Reception staff were very helpful, as were the staff on duty at breakfast where food was absolutely fine. The poor ratings were earned purely on the weakness of the evening dining experience in terms of food quality which was way below what we have come to expect from Holiday Inns across the UK, Europe, Canada and America. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Much Nicer IHG Hotels for a lot Cheaper! Stayed here in March 2014 for the first time. As a IHG Platinum Elite member, I have stayed in many of the HI hotels and this was the poorest I have stayed in regards to value for money. It didn't get off to a great start - although I checked-in quite late (around 5.30p.m.#, I was asked to wait in the reception area as my room hadn't been serviced. I then arrived in my room - old fashioned, drab and dreary. The website calls this "19th century elegance" - I'd call it old, tired and very 'Fawlty Towers'. Also be aware that Parking and Breakfast is at an additional premium. The Holiday Inn Express - which I always see as being at the 'lower' end of the HI chain - is 500 metres away on Blonk Street and I have stayed here many times before. I would much recommend the HI Express over this hotel #and Breakfast is included here in the price#. Looking at the price difference between these two hotels I cannot see how this can be justified in respect to the paying guest. The service, décor and atmosphere here is well below par. The guest is obviously paying solely for the upkeep of a very old and tired building - not the comfort or service that is expected. Overall, very disappointed in this hotel and I will try to avoid staying here in the future. May 2, 2014

Guests smoke outside the main entrance, and when there is a function at the hotel this can go on until very late (3am in our case). It does not help that the windows in the room are very cheap single glazed aluminum style, that have seen better days April 13, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by not quiet the same Having stayed at the Victoria many times before and enjoyed our stay, my wife and I were very disappointed with our recent visit. Everything was decidedly average, the room no better than an Express, no extras in the room (even as a gold card holder). The only thing differentiating this hotel from the budget brand Holiday Inn Express just 100 metres away, is a slightly better breakfast which you have to pay extra for anyway. Other services I would expect from Holiday Inn were very poor considering the brand. We waited 50 minutes for a bar snack, really just not good enough. When in Sheffield I shall stay at the Express from now on. April 9, 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Work stay Holiday Inn Sheffield was fine for a two night work related stay - staff welcoming and efficient - room okay - bit dated with creaky floorboards - and very vocal pigeons outside window from 0530 AM! Disappointed at excessive charges for wi-fi - would expect free at hotel with these charges/facilities. Location good for access to city etc. Overall, a reasonable hotel to stay in. March 29, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good location with rooms that sleep 4 people We chose this hotel for the second time as it was one of only a few that slept 4 people per room, with a good city centre location for bars and clubs. The room was adequate and the bathroom was decorated nicely and clean. Wifi was available free also plus parking. Reception staff were very helpful upon checking in, however evening staff were found to be unhelpful and a little rude. We called to ask for an iron and had to remind them 3 times, to be told 30 minutes later that they were still trying to locate one. Room service was slow and food was poor. March 24, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Grand Victorian charm, Holiday Inn quality service Spent reward points to stay here for a romantic weekend. Erroneously tried to check in to the adjacent Holiday Inn Express, a very smart looking new build, before being directed a little further up the hill to the rather older Station Hotel. We were a bit nervous that older was worse, but the place was smart and well maintained, retaining the charm of the old building that newer business hotels simply can't match. Upgraded to an executive suite room, which was large and had everything we required. Old school double glazing was in place but thick curtains helped to block out city centre noise. Breakfast was tasty, a good selection of cooked and continental foods, but despite arriving over 30 mins before breakfast closed there wasn't much/any of some items left. Staff were a bit too keen to clear tables, taking plates as the last mouthful was lifted from them. This was the only slight blot on an otherwise perfect stay. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for those looking for a relaxing getaway in more romantic surroundings than your traditional newbuild hotel. March 23, 2014

The public rooms have been beautifully restored and the whole place exudes the atmosphere of a traditional railway hotel from the Victorian era but with all the modern comforts that you would expect from a Holiday Inn. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great value for money and Excellent customer service - The check in process was one of the best I have experienced, Our room key was ready, I was acknowledged as a platinum elite member, provided with the free gift and was offered the internet code for wireless without requesting it. I also received an unsolicited apology that we were not able to have an upgrade as we had booked a family room and there were no exec family rooms. The room was on the 2nd floor on the corner and was clean and a reasonable size the only downside was that it was noisy during the night from the wind. We were advised that as the hotel is a listed building and so they cannot install double glazing. The hotel has real character is in a perfect central location and the quiet room on the ground floor is a lovely touch. Food wise we only had breakfast in the hotel and this was a great selection, However, what made the stay for us was the staff. They couldn't do enough to help. Every member of staff we met the girl that checked us in, the chambermaid, the barman, the people on reception were all friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and competent. A real credit to the hotel. We will definitely stay at this hotel again if we are in Sheffield March 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 Amazing Staff Hi Stayed for the 2nd time in four weeks and when you have had a long day at work it is welcoming to be met with a friendly face. Paige who booked me into the hotel ensured this was a swift process, and enquired how I was (which was very considerate of her). I would also like to mention Mike who works on the bar again very friendly, finally I would like to mention Bev and Paul who work at breakfast time I know they have worked years at this hotel for years but their enthusiam is infectious and makes you leave for your day at work with a smile on your face. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Romantic Getaway I have stayed at the Royal Victoria on average 3 to 4 times per year for the past12 years and would never stay at another hotel in Sheffield. I have tried most other hotels in Sheffield but none have the character and are as beautiful as this hotel - they don't build hotels like this anymore. Over the years the hotel has really changed for the better and every time I visit I notice improvements. Also the staff are really amazing and can't do enough for you. My new partner and I had a lovely romantic dinner in the restaurant with a great bottle of Rioja. The next morning we had a leisurely breakfast and although it was busy the staff were attentative and the poached eggs were served just perfect. All in all we had a lovely weekend. March 11, 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Noisy room / dated and worn curtains Staff were lovely and hotel looked lovely from the outside and public areas were clean and tidy. Unfortunately the room was so noisy, through traffic and constant police and ambulance sirens, that no sleep was managed. The curtains were torn in places, looked mouldy and gave the room an unclean feel, Towels were old and even when given extra ones, these were below par also. Would not return to this holiday inn. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good hotel, excellent large room, ample parking, near centre. A lovely hotel, comfortable & within walking distance of city centre. The reception rooms & bar are relaxing and pleasant. We stayed on a DBB basis which was good value. The only downside was that none of the main courses on the set menu included any vegetables, except a mushroom sauce, & none were available as an extra. I did request some & was served with mixed peppers. The chef did accept my concerns & said he would change the menu. All food was tasty & cooked to perfection. We would definitely stay there again. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Plesant stay Enjoyed our stay overall and would recommend the hotel. Staff were efficient, polite and approachable. Locating the entrance at night was a challenge however used sat nav directions and did not check what the website offered regarding directions before travelling. Bar choice of bitters poor and a good local draft bitter would be a refreshing change to the usual limited choice normally offered in all UK Holiday Inn's. Its a large victorian hotel and the residents bar could be made to feel a little more cosy and less imposing January 29, 2014
