Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good rooms but billing problems The room in this hotel was very good with everything that you need and the hotel in general is fine. We had a few problems while we were there which were: 1) Bought 2 breakfast tickets the night before for £9.50 The next day when I checked my bill on the TV it showed -£19.00 showing as paid from my credit card but then it also showed breakfast +£21.90 meaning that when I was to check out they would have tried to charge me an extra £2.90. This should be automated to show the correct amounts so no idea why they did this. This was corrected but had I not noticed before I checked out it would have taken more time to check out. 2) Breakfast on the Saturday was crazy. It was busy but they were expecting this as they had lots of reserved tables for some coach parties. After we sat down at a table (which there were still plenty of free) we had to wait for over 15 minutes before there were any bacon or fried eggs. The hash browns didn't appear until 20 mins after we arrived at breakfast. The toaster is terrible, big queues forming as people keep changing the settings (which they wouldn't need to do if the toaster worked properly in the first place) so we asked about getting baguettes (which the menu says are available) and after a while they brought out 1 (yes, just 1!) baguette. After we had some of this baguette it was all gone within a few mins and they never brought any more out. We had to ask each time and they only ever brought out 1 at a time from the kitchen even though there was far more demand for it. The whole thing just seems amatuer and not at all like my breakfast experiences in Cardiff or Hull which were so much better. I also asked about getting some muffins instead (as there were none out) and eventually a woman brought some out and then proceeded to cut them with her hands (even though I would have wanted to cut it myself as they shouldn't really be cutting things for customers whilst clearing up the dirty plates at the same time!) Then later I asked again for a baguette as of course there were none out and this same woman then came over later to show me that she had brought out a lovely hot baguette from the kitchen and she actually wanted me to touch it to see how hot it was! Is there no hygeine training in this hotel? We did complain to the front desk about this breakfast service and they offered us 1 free breakfast for the next morning which we accepted 3) After turning up at breakfast the next day which was not as bad as the day before (but there were still no muffins out and we still had to ask about baguettes as they only ever brought out one at a time!) we got back to our room and realised that they had again overcharged us for the breakfast. They had charged us for 2 breakfasts even though one of them was supposed to be complimentary. Thank god that the same person we had complained to the day before was still working the next morning otherwise I have no idea how long it would have taken to check out after correcting the bill yet again. Although the rooms in this hotel are fine, the service leaves a lot to be desired especially at breakfast. It just seems like they were not prepared at all to serve breakfast even though they must do this every morning (and they roughly know how many people are going to turn up as they sell much cheaper breakfasts if you buy a ticket the day before) I would recommend this hotel but just ensure you leave enough time for breakfast and having your bill corrected before you check out! Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by A Bit Let Down This hotel is in need of a refurbishment, rooms look tired and dated, particularly the room furniture and bathroom. The receptionist was focused on up selling at check in, which I found quite annoying. Breakfast was reasonable quality but poorly stocked, pastries and bread for toast had run out and were not replaced. I woke up with a migraine at 04:45 and found that there were no facilities to buy pain killers or even a cold bottle of water! A facility that many of the hotel's competitors offer. Overall left feeling a bit left down. May 29, 2013

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Givemeabreak13 After numerous stays as a platinum member this will probably be the last.Whilst the hotel matches most Holiday Inn stays in terms of a good nights sleep the food and customer experience are just plain awful.The current chef seems to have a knack of deep frying everything and on this occasion even the pizza felt deep fried.If you are interested in the apparently grossly unfair bank holiday rosters then the staff interaction will leave you feeling really involved,if not,then prepare to be ignored.Reference the food,as ever the answer to mediocrity is a free drink,but even the cellar man appears capable of ruining the Stella Artois,which trust me when served in the correct glass is virtually impossible to pour flat.Its a shame really because the location for business is really great.Guess I will just have to put up with the commute in and out of Newcastle.Oh yes and no free Wi Fi,not very 21st Century May 22, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Out of the way location The location of this hotel a few miles outside of Newcastle city centre was ideal. It was in quiet grounds, and although close to a busy main road, little traffic noise could be heard. Ideal for day trips along the coast southwards, and easy to get north avoiding Newcastle. One unexpected bonus I suspect, is that the out of the way location tends not to attract young weekend revellers, or stag/hen night events. In fact it seems to be a popular place for overnight stays for coach holidays for senior citizens, so no late night discos! Pity some of them filled their pockets with items from the breakfast buffet as they left the dining room! The hotel is a little "faded" in décor and the dining room furniture a little old fashioned, with a mixture of unmatching chairs, but overall it was perfectly suitable for a few nights' stay, and the buffet breakfast was very good. Staff very friendly and welcoming. We would stay here again and overall it was very good value for money, especially if choosing the pre-booked non-refundable deal. May 20, 2013

Special member of staff Ann who was in charge at breakfast, we had great service even though she was rushed off her feet with the guests of a wedding party. This was true of all the breakfast staff. The overall facilities were good with a bar serving alcohol as well as coffee/tea and a restaurant. The hotel was well sitated and was close to local places of interest. It was also far enough away from the centre of the city thereby avoiding the noise and buzz of a lively centre. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this hotel to others. April 12, 2013

Over the past few months I have been staying at the Holiday Inn Washington and I can defiantly recommend this hotel, both in terms of value, friendliness and comfort. Everyone should expect the best and as a Priority Club member the staff are attentive to my needs and treat me very well, is very much a home from home with the North East friendliness shining through. And even the hotel manager takes time from his day to mingle with the guests and ensure their needs are met. Well done to the HI Washington - keep up the great work! January 22, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Holiday Inn Washington I am aregular visitor here why, its reasonably priced and you earn points Rooms are very tired and quite scruffy now But my major issue is the quality of the food in the restaurant which is consistantly poor ,comparable to average canteen food but at high high prices.The trouble is their is no alternative other than the Carvery in anywhere near, Yes theyeven managed to ruin a mixed grill .... Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Staff-Poor Rooms I booked 2 rooms at the Holiday Inn Washington, in recent years I've used Intercontinental C Plaza & H I Express hotels around the world. Most stays have exceeded expectations but a bad experience last year lead me to look at other options!! however I like the Holiday Inn brand so continue to use them along with other brands. I must say while the staff were fine the room was poor, old furniture dreadful small bathroom and the beds awful.. I wont be staying again, although the Holiday Inn brand as a whole is generally pretty good; the other H I hotel I stayed in on this trip was great January 9, 2013

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Warm and cosy Good location right by the A1 North and South, warm and cosy but not too hot everywhere on a bitterly cold night. Choice of 2 pillows, hard or very hard, its not much of a choice, there used to be a good one kept in the cupboard but not any more. Paintwork rather tired in rooms and bathrooms. I had a late (9.30) breakfast as it was an icy morning but beans and black pudding were like bullets when I got there. Staff were all very good. December 12, 2012

The room was a good size, well-furnished and warm and the bed /pillows comfortable. The two courses and a drink for £14.95 for dinner - Mon, Tue & Wed were good value, tasty and well-presented. Minor adverse things to note were the bath going rusty around the plughole, the lack of salting to the carpark and exterior paths in the snow and no upgrade available but these didn't cloud a pleasant stay, thank you. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good and comfortable bed with a choice of pillows I have stayed here before some years ago, and had the usual Priority Club welcome, which is always good. The weather was dreadful and the fact that there is no road mentioned in the address did not help my sat nav to find it. It would be a simple improvement I think. The snow was pretty bad and the car park remained icy underfoot for both days, but when I mentioned it some action was taken. The bathroom needs some attention in the room I was in. The bath is chipped and it, and the sofa looked rather tired. It really is about time they stopped chagrging for Wifi in this group . It's an essential to the buisness traveller, and should be free. The food was pretty good and enjoyable, and doubtless I will be back December 11, 2012

I was disappointed by the surley attitude of the waitress at breakfast. Myself and other guests commented that we felt that we were treated curtly for turning up for breakfast at 9am. The scrambled eggs has seen better days and I asked the waitress to request fresh ones from the kitchen. I should not have to point this out if the staff are running a proper service. The room was clean but the bed was hard and I expected some effort to be made to give me an upgrade as I am a platinum member. I did request this in advance. Won't be staying there again I'm afraid. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Tired building that struggles in the 21st century I find it amazing that internet access is charged as an extra in a Holiday Inn when most Holdiay Inn Express sites (and much cheaper hotels) have free access even if only in the lounge/bar area. This is more important than a free newspaer or welcome pack! This is now an old building which I accept is difficult to upgrade but the rooms are not as good as more modern hotels. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and I would not wish them to think that they were doing anything less than an excellent job. November 27, 2012
