A weekend break away with the family so we were really looking forward to being able to relax and unwind. After a full day sightseeing in York we checked into the hotel expecting a warm and comfortable room and then a few drinks in the bar however the room was indeed 'less than perfect'.
OK, the room was a family room with a second bed made up for Tiny when we arrived complete with crayons and colouring book (nice touch) and a decent sized TV. All seemed well until you looked above the TV and noticed the dark marks all over the wall, I wouldn't like to think how they got there or what they were. At that point you really start noticing things, the holes in the net curtains, stains on the carpet, hairs (curly ones) on the bathroom floor, rust around the sink and bath plug holes, cracked tiles in the bathroom and so on, things that you can put up with however when pulling a bit of toilet roll off the toilet roll holder then fell on my foot.
At that point I had to go back to reception and insist that something was done. I am not normally one for raising a complaint however we were a bit fed up by this point. The receptionist was polite but told me, after some considerable tapping of the computer keyboard, that the hotel was really busy and that all rooms were full, a bit like a nativity where we were expected to stay in the stable [of a room]. I could have walked away however if I returned to the room without a solution the night would have been even more miserable so I stayed put and insisted that something had to be done, either a change of room or we will vacate the room while a cleaner went and tried to make it better. Eventually, and after being made to feel a little embarrassed, the receptionist went away and spoke with her manager and returned saying that there was another room, keys issued and thanks given and I was on my way, this is where the second half of the review comes in....
The new room was an executive room with nice décor, comfortable bed and a clean bathroom, in fact pretty much what we have come to expect from the HI brand. We settled into the room and then commenced our relaxing evening. I couldn't understand for the life of me why we weren't even offered the opportunity to upgrade as the charge for this was minimal and the exec room was actually more suitable for a family than the 'family' room as we, with one short person with us, had the pull out bed and still had the sofa whereas in the 'family' room the sofa is no more.
The bar, hmm. First pint was flat as a pancake although exchanged without much fuss. Draught soft drinks machine was not working so plastic bottles from the supermarket were in its place and, to the surprise of Mrs C, no peanuts! Bar staff were polite although the first young man was protesting at being brought in at short notice and then having to return for breakfast service in the morning.
Breakfast in the hotel was again a mixed affair, stocks of food ran down quickly and to get anyone's attention you had to literally chase someone. Pastries were not fresh and the fruit salad was limited, maybe due to the demand on the kitchen staff or perhaps as a cost cutting exercise?
Being recognised as a Platinum member is important however a free drink at the bar doesn't do it for me if the 'room upgrade' is more of a 'downgrade'. The usual benefits of membership do not seem to apply here as we would expect a couple of bottles of water in the room and a newspaper, none of which apply to HI York. Perhaps we have been spoilt at other locations too much and this is the normal standard to be expected from a HI, further reviews to follow.....
Overall the stay turned out to be OK once the room was changed although this review would have been about half the size had the room been of a decent standard in the first place. The location is good with easy access to the city and the racecourse can be seen from many of the hotel bedrooms (if you look through the trees). I wouldn't let this put anyone off staying here but I would recommend checking the room on arrival and highlighting any issues before unpacking and settling in.

Stayed here on a Saturday night to experience York for a day. The hotel is about 2 miles away from downtown so you will need to drive or taxi it into the city centre. The parking is free at the hotel, but you will spend about £12 a day to park in the city centre.
The hotel needs a serious makeover. The rooms are very outdated and standard UK size. Just nothing special about this hotel. Would recommend staying in the city centre instead of just outside.

A hotel that I can recommend as a base to use when visiting the York area.
The hotel is well maintained, clean and all the staff are friendly and approachable.
The breakfast is of high quality and a good selection is available.
You can leave your car, get a bus just a short stroll from the hotel, depending on time, get a day saver, currently £3.40 and travel all day, or if just going in for the night £3.20 return. Cheaper than parking and plenty of them, the No 4 is the most frequent every six to ten minutes Monday to Saturday up to seven, then about every thirty minutes

Pleasant staff, good room, disappointing breakfast. The hotel in general could do with a refurbishment.

Was disappointed with my stay. poor amenities, room outdated, very poor bathroom and quality of items provided very bad. no mini bar, No bottled water. Noise level too high from other guest. over all very disappointing.

Been back to the same hotel for last few years and have recommended a number of friends to stay here as well. Hotel is just the right location and it's like coming home every time
