Not within the "center" Madrid where all the hustle and bustle are (Puerto del Sol) but the Metro is right at the doorstep. Helpful staff. However, since it was winter, air conditioning was turned off. The room was stuffy and hot so we had to open the windows at night to sleep.

Good location, next door to metro. Close to excellent supermarkets. Walking distance to river and hop on, hop off bus. Staff excellent, comfortable beds.

This hotel is perhaps one of the true hidden gems of the various hotels in the city of Madrid. While it is out of the normal hustle and bustle of the center of the Madrid, you can quickly reach any spot in Madrid within a few minutes. The hotel is right above both the Metro and the urban train stations. Thus, you can take either form of transportation quickly back to the City center. If you wish, you can also take the bus however I have never tried it. I used the train to and from the Airport and it worked great. At 2.5 Euros each direction, it is both faster and far cheaper (~37 euros) for a taxi. It took about 35 minutes from the Airport (T4) station to the hotel lobby. If you need to use any of the other airport terminals, there is a free bus service within the airport.
I have stayed in Madrid for many business trips (>230 so far) and have basically lived in hotels for many months during various projects. The longest time was about 1 year. I think by now I know which hotels are the nicer hotels for those who need to have a quiet place. This Holiday Inn is a very nice clean hotel and the hotel staff is great. The room price is very competitive to the other hotels in Madrid but I feel you get a much better value for your money at this one. The hotel is in very good condition and you do not have many of the maintenance issues that other hotels in Madrid often have. When you wander around the hotel as I did, I did not see any maintenance issues that are so common these days. I was on the third floor right next to the traffic circle and with the double window systems they have installed, you never hear any traffic.
I would recommend the bar and the evening restaurant (I did not try to lunch in the hotel). While it seems a bit basic in the Restaurant menu, I would highly recommend the Shrimp with Pasta dish. It was always served very fresh and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. I should also mention the house red wine is not some typical cheap wine but rather, it actually had a very good flavor and the price was right. I became a fan of it quickly. The staff in the hotel bar were quick and friendly. They were bilingual and always seemed to be very happy to help people with picking the right drink. In terms of the bar drinks, the only downside they had was the lack of fresh whipped cream to make Café Irlandes (Irish Coffee) but I settled for another glass of the great wine.
I used the hotel laundry twice and it was very fast. While hotel laundry prices are often high, this hotel was competitive and the quality of the cleaning was good. I wish the hotel did have a coin operated laundry but in Europe, this is not a common service in the Holiday Inn hotels. In the Asian Holiday Inn’s, it is common. In the USA, normally only the Holiday Inn Express brand has them (about 90% of the time).
The only drawback to the Hotel is the WiFi network. While coverage in the hotel is good (I never found a place it did not work and this is not true in most hotels), the major problem is the Wifi security. As an IT security professional, it shocked me that the system (operated by Kubi Wireless) would be doing “man in the middle” attacks on the secure connections you wanted to visit. Any site you were visiting in a secure manner (using SSL), they were trying to intercept. The other issue is that Kubi wants to charge you more money for faster (normal speed) connections and it is pricey. I am not sure the Hotel is actually aware of these issues.
Would I recommend the hotel to others? Yes.
I will be back in the hotel soon (but I will bring my own WiFi network). I would highly recommend Holiday Inn (and other IHG brands) as an excellent hotel brand to use and the only suggestion is to read the rewards of each hotel (of any brand) before you reserve your room stay. Again, this is really a nice hotel.
