As a guest at our Holiday Inn Express® hotels in Petersburg, Virginia, you'll have the opportunity to stroll cobblestoned streets in Old Towne and sample pulled-pork sandwiches in modest barbecue joints. This historic community on the Appomattox River is a gateway to Civil War battlefields.
It's a short drive from our hotels in Petersburg to the grassy fields of National Battlefield Park, site of the Siege of Petersburg, a bloody ten-month standoff that led to the collapse of the Confederacy. The Siege Museum in Old Towne chronicles the social history leading up to this epic battle. During the Civil War, Petersburg was a safe haven for many fugitive slaves traveling the Underground Railroad. A few blocks from Old Towne is the Pocahontas Island Historic District, one of the first communities in the country founded by freed slaves. Step in to folksy Pocahontas Island Museum, a diverse collection of African-American artifacts; admission fees are voluntary. Sunlight streams through fifteen Tiffany stained-glass windows in the 18th-century Old Blandford Church, close to our Petersburg hotels.
Spreading out from the scenic Appomattox River, the historic redbrick structures of Old Towne were built after an 1815 fire wiped out the city's wooden warehouses. Today the revitalized Old Towne has antiques shops, art galleries and cheerful pubs and bistros. On Saturday mornings farmers sell fresh produce and flowers at the Farmer's Market in an octagonal 1878 landmark. Our Petersburg hotels are convenient to several venerable barbecue joints doling out pit-cooked pulled-pork sandwiches at rock-bottom prices.
Book a room at one of our hotels in Petersburg to discover the laidback charms of this historic Southern city. Celebrate at the Fall Family Festival in October or stroll candlelit galleries on the second Friday of each month for Old Towne's Friday for the Arts.
I stayed during the blizzard of 2016 (weekend of January 22) and was stuck at the hotel because the parking lot was not plowed at all on Saturday and the sidewalks were not cleared at anytime. The[More] hotel is great and exactly what to expect from a Candlewood however the issue with the parking lot is unsatisfactory.[Less]

Very quiet and pleasant stay
Property is located somewhat off the beaten path, but very easy to get to from the Interstate and surrounded by pines. Very quiet and also a very safe place to spend the night. Nice southern[More] hospitality and you can see typically Virginia décor upon entering the hotel which reminds me of entering a private home and gives a feeling of comfort. Check in is quick. Recommend rooms on either end of the building as they are a little larger. The bathroom is a tad small, but plenty of hot water. I fully enjoyed breakfast of scrambled eggs with toast and coffee. They have coffee and hot water all night for folks like me who like to get a nice cup of green tea before going to bed. To the immediate north of the hotel, not more than about 100ft is a waffle house and then over across their parking lot is a Burger King. It is within easy driving distance of historical sites as well as a local military installation. Very nice staff![Less]
