My wife and I were so impressed with beauty of the pool area as well as really nice breakfast area-the breakfast was one of the best we have in any included breakfast packages. A short walk to beach made this place a great vacation experience.

We were welcomed right away even though we arrived late at night. They gave us a late checkout and were very understanding of our needs. The room was very nice and the hotel was quiet.

We loved staying here and would recommend it to anyone.
The rooms are simple, small, and showing their age, but the exterior has been majorly remodeled and the pool is fantastic. I couldn't believe they had actual wood chairs and lounges with pads and umbrellas. Like a cruise ship. The staff cleaned up the entire pool deck every single night. Wow. The hotel is spotless. We never saw a crumb or wrapper or bug the entire week. Our bathroom had been updated and the best part was the European style walk in shower with glass wall. Just beautiful. The carpets were likely going to be replaced with tile soon; the appliances were clean but obviously used for many guests. Though I have to say the fridge was HUGE and it was so nice being able to keep Gatorade and snacks so handy. The neighboorhood is extremely safe, walkable, and quiet but for one exception- the machine refill person came to load up food and beverages right outside the interior courtyard first floor rooms by the lobby on Monday morning very early, other than that we heard zero noise. Everyone who works here is kind and helpful and does their job. Loved having free parking right outside our door, well lit, and the guests seem to respect each other.

We loved our stay there. The suite was very large. The location was great with a short walk to the beach. The breakfast was good except they did not restock it. If we went to breakfast early we had a nice selection of food. If we arrived at breakfast near the end of the breakfast time most of the food was gone.

Rooms were neat and spacious. Continental Breakfast that was included with room was great. Check in- (lady) at front desk very helpful and extremely nice. She recommended a restaurant and did not disappoint. We would definitely stay here again.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by HIEmember1 Location Good & Staff were friendly
This is an average hotel at best... It appears this was ran by another hotel chain and then HIE purchased. It needs some serious upgrades. In Room 101 the flooring was lose, the blinds were broken and the bleach smell was overpowering.
The pool area was nice (except the diarrhea sign discouraged me from getting in).
HIE could really use and upgrade in their breakfast selection (throughout the chain).
Compared to the HIE in downtown SD this place is in need of some serious upgrades and remodel. I would only recommend because of its location (couple blocks from the beach).

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by roadtripping Love the location and hotel but room had bugs
We were first given the room directly over the office. While it is a quaint little room with it's own private staircase, the staff door to the front desk is very loud and seemed to be used quite a bit overnight. On the second morning when we were getting up more casually, we noticed bugs jumping onto our feet. not just one or two but lots of them. Both my husband and I received several bites. We quickly packed up and moved out of the room and waited for the staff to give us another room. The graciously upgraded us to a poolside room but the next morning at breakfast another guest saw our bug bitten legs and feet and said that she too was in a room with bugs (fleas).
The pool was very warm both evenings when we went for a swim, in fact the pool was warmer than the hot tub.
As for if I would recommend the property, probably but I would definitely check the room before bringing all your stuff in. The location was nice, staff was friendly and the Mexican restaurant across the street was great.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by TWill39 Nice location, that's about it.
I stayed at this hotel for one night and used my rewards points to cover the room - my reward for patronizing the Holiday Inn brand was - they stuck me in one of the smallest rooms i've ever stayed in. Later we went to the pool to cool off and relax, but the water temperature was just a few degrees cooler than the nearby hot tub. A nice location - but this hotel leaves a lot to be desired. I will not be back.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 Quiet, easy going location
This is a great hotel if you want a relaxing place to stay for a few days. The beach is only a few blocks away, and is a very nice beach that is not populated with tourists. It is a nice break from the busyness of San Diego. Smaller hotel, so easy to maneuver and get to the pool, breakfast, etc.

I stayed there for three nights and had the best service! The staff was by far the friendliest I have ever had. They recommended where to shop, eat and sightsee from a locals point of view!
I would highly recommend the Holiday Inn Express in La Jolla!

The staff greeted us and visited with us. Made us feel right at home. We would book this hotel again. It is a more private place to stay in a busy area, but feels like it is by itself with the layout. Thanks!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by TrademarkLawyer This place is a gem at a great value
Stayed here for three nights while visiting friends in La Jolla and fell in love with the place. Although I frequently stay at hotels when travelling for business this is the first time I write a review because these guys deserve some praise.
The room was nice and clean, spacious, perfectly quiet, tastefully furnished and decorated. Nothing like the usual motel chain fare. It smelled fresh and clean. Housekeeping made the room up each morning in perfect condition. The courtyard and pool area were also well kept and beautifully designed.
All staff members I encoutered were very friendly without being phony or obtrusive. Their uniforms were clean and neat, including the housekeeping ladies.
Free in room WiFi worked perfectly.
Location is just great. Walk down to the beach in five minutes. Restaurants, cafes and some shopping nearby. Close to La Jolla village, Prospect etc. Clean, safe area with nice people without being touristy, away from the hubbub on Prospect.
Rates are just excellent. A run down motel next to the Interstate with creepy staff charged me almost the same price in Gallup NM a few days earlier.
The only (minor) downside: I missed an in room safe. It is possible to leave your valualbes at the front desk though.

I stay at HIE properties often for business. This was, by far, the worst experience! The first room assigned wreaked of cigarette smoke. The second room had cobwebs around the ceiling that flew around the room when I blew dried my hair the next morning.
In the morning when I bent down to pick up my bill from under the door, I was greeted by a black widow spider in her web in the corner of the door.
When I checked in for both rooms, the clerk verbalized my room number in front of another guest. That guest was questionable with her hygiene, appearance, and intentions. She was in the front office both times I was there. It made me very uncomfortable that she knew my room number.
The property itself is not up to the usual standards of quality HIE properties. The rooms are outdoor facing, and I didn't feel very safe.
I never was able to connect to the internet, even though I double checked with the front desk on the correct code. There apparently wasn't a strong-enough signal, and I was fairly close to the front office.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hoyagixxer My Favorite Spot in La Jolla
I travel to San Diego for work twice a month, and I always stay in this hotel. Open air rooms with a pool, and lots of suites. The price is never too high and it is walking distance to many restaurants (Promiscuous Fork is my favorite). My only complaints would be that the rooms are a little dated, and there is no gym, but with the Beach 2 blocks away, running on the beach is better than a room with antiquated workout equipment any day.
Give it a try and you will see why I love this place. Standard HIE breakfast included, and minutes off I5.

This is our favorite motel. We come here at least 1 or 2 times each year. It is so relaxing & beautiful! We live in Missouri so it is so nice to stay in La Jolla in the summer when it is so hot & humid in MO. Then, in the winter when it's so cold & snowy! It's like experiencing the most wonderful things in life! The location is great & so close to the beautiful Pacific ocean! I will continue to come her as often as possible my whole life! Breakfast is great, too! Staff is very helpful & friendly!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by RShep The room was very comfortable and the service was great!
This was a really good Holiday Inn. Its layout was great - not a highrise building, but lovely rooms surrounding the pool. It was peaceful and the beds very comfortable. Breakfast was good with a great welcome from the hostess. The selection was quite adequate but was not too keen on the hot dishes. The rooms were serviced to a high standard.
There was a good sized pool and jacquizi and the whole area was spotless.
I would definitely stay here when in La Jolla/San Diego again.

First, we were given a queen suite that was on the main road, La Jolla Blvd., and it was loud because of the traffic and the bus stop located near by. Then, my daughter noticed several large stains on the couch cushions, and they were still wet! Later that evening my daughter went to take a shower and complained that the water never got warm. Also, in attempts to get some sleep, we turned both the heat/air units on high to drown out the noise from the road. The next morning, I discovered the water temp was warm to cool as well. Then, while getting ready in the bathroom I saw what looked to be blood splatter on the ceiling. As for the breakfast, they were the usual items served by HIE, however every day the food was cold. The only plus was the lady that worked M-F was nice and helpful. Also, I believe they could benefit from a waffle maker because the pancake maker is so limited on the number of pancakes it makes and seems to always need service to refill it. As far as the sofa bed, did I say bed? I should say a sofa spring because the mattress was so worn that I could feel the springs. The next night my daughter and I flipped it over and that seemed to level it more. Then my husband discovered that the window in the queen bedroom was broken, so it was not able to close for it to lock. Finally, we were able to use the hot tub for two nights, until we were notified my the GM that the heater had gone out. I'm disappointed that I paid for a queen suite that was in much needed repair. I'd not recommend this HIE because of noise, cold breakfast, comfort and cleanliness.

We had a wonderful 4 day stay at the hotel. We had a queen suite for the three of us and were pleased with the large area, It was like having a small apartment. The bed was firm, just like ours at home. My husband and I slept on the queen and our 12-yr old on the pull out sofa. The courtyard was pleasant and I saw small children enjoying the area. The location was perfect and only 2 blocks from the ocean. Will want to stay here again.

Not your typical HI Express, but that's a good thing! The hotel has fabulous character to it and a perfect location with the beach just a few minutes of a walk away. A tremendous value for what you get considering that you are in La Jolla. Our trip was based around a visit to Sea World, and there are other HI Expresses closer to the park, but this was well worth the extra 10-15 minute drive.
