Breakfast options is poor and coffee is bad.

Took the kids to London for a short trip rather than make the commute each day as we wanted to see a number of museums, Buckingham Palace and the usual sight-seeing stuff. We were very happy with the cost of our stay at HIE -Old Street which was cheaper than most but did not mean that we had to put up with dirty sub-standard accommodation and we had the bonus of not having the additional expense of breakfast every day. Yes breakfast was busy and fairly basic but plentiful and more than expected for the price paid. Staff were friendly and courteous and the room was spotless - which is important to us. It was fairly small but the sofa was set up as a double bed for the kids so this took up a lot of available space, and at the end of the day it is a budget hotel in London. There were enough tv channels to keep the kids happy in the morning and tea/coffee facilities and a hairdryer kept Mum happy. A thermostat meant we controlled the temp of the room which is always good as I often find hotel rooms over-heated and stuffy. The shower was good and had a shower gel dispenser if you needed it and there was a plentiful supply of fluffy towels and even different pillows to suit your requirements. I thought this hotel provided great value for money and if you don't, you need to pay more or stop whinging!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by lolyahoo Cleanest room ever, good service, friendly starff, bad mattress.
Room small but comfortable. Once sofa-bed was open there's no room to use the desk. There's TV and in-room tea/coffee making facilities. Cleanest hotel room we've ever slept in but mattress was a back breaker. I heard other residents complain at reception, even though I didn't, but it seems a common complaint. Staff helpful and will look after you well. There's an ok free wi-fi. There's a paid option for higher speed internet (expensive) but the free one was good enough to stream youtube. Good breakfast although could be a bit more varied. Very near Old Street tube station, just a couple minutes walk. All in all a positive stay. Will use again in future but will complain next time if mattresses are not upgraded.

After our sad experience with HIE in Cologne, Germany, this was quite a nice stay! After we changed our room (broken AC and TV) we had a very pleasant stay at our room at the rear of the hotel. Breakfast is simple, but tasty and for free!
The staff was very courteous.

A/C was broken or so and VERY noisy during night, also after changing to an other room.
Room pretty comfortable
location is quiet good.
breakfast is poor, and due to messy guests (lots of students) the floor was mostly covered in breakfast bits and pieces...
very friendly staff.

Overall not impressed, air conditioning was sometimes noisey and permanently on which left you with a runny nose, the shaving sockets didn't work and the breakfast/dining room felt like a school dining hall. Also, the hotel didn't seem to be staffed in the restaurant section at night which left you believing the only way to get dinner was to go out for it. The bar was way too close to the lobby which made sitting at it unrelaxing. Needless to say there are better choices for the same if not less money. I stayed in room 109 so if you get this room make sure the above has been fixed !

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by IGM EDI Good location and great service
As stated above, but the one disappointment was the lack of inter-room noise insulation. In the early hours of the morning the youngsters in room adjacent to ours were making such a din, that we were wakened up and had to call reception. To the credit of the staff their response was immediate and very effective!

This is NOT a five star hotel !!!! It is a nice place, nothing fancy but clean and cosy.
Close to the sub, nice area (don't eat at the Nelson retreat !!), we had a room on 5th floor backside and wasn't bothered by noise.
Staff was service minded and even though we had a "odd" reservation is was handled without any problems.
The bed was fairly ok, but not the best quality (to be expected in this level though). The "extra-bed" (couch) was very bad (only real disappointment we could find).
Good breakfast, just wonder why bacon wasn't part of this ?? A bit crowded some mornings due to some large groups of youths - might remove 2-3 tables in the middle for more space between, just to avoid "accidents" when people moving around with breakfast and coffee (which was excellent according to my wife) - but off cause it will mean loss of seats.
We had a very nice stay and expect to come again :0)

We stayed for just one night for our visit to the O2. The hotel location was ideal, service very good, room basic but comfortable and included tea and coffee and reasonable breakfast included in already well priced room. Would definitely choose to stay here again.

I stayed here for three nights and loved everything about it.
The staff where really friendly, the rooms were nice and clean and this was ideal for me as I was on a business trip.
The parking was very accommodating and I can only speak as I find.
I would not hesitate staying here again..

We traveled with our two young children. We found the staff to be an asset, very helpful and accommodating. Travel cots were provided for the children. We found the hotel to be an excellent choice for a family trip to London near a fun and enjoyable part of the city.

Considering this hotel is in the IT centre of London the internet is very poor and basically not working. They want you to pay for a good connection which you can do so as a Gold Member was annoyed they advertise they have wi fi available for free.

The hotel is in a good location near to the tube station, although on a main road the rear facing rooms are quiet enough. Room was quite small for 4 of us as was the bathroom but we did not spend much time in there so it didn't matter, the room was clean and well maintained during our stay. Staff were exceptional at the hotel, very friendly and very helpful a real credit to the IHG brand. Breakfast was busy both days but the staff coped well and the food on offer was of a good quality and plenty of it. Would use this hotel again if visiting London.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by sezzp Great location and reasonable price and room size for London
Only 3 tube stops from Euston this hotel was perfectly located for us, we were never more than 20 min's and one tube change away from any of the stations we jumped on at.
The room was good, a little cramped at one end due to the open sofa bed which didn't feel so comfy to me, but my 12 year old said he slept really well in it. I too slept fine in the double, even though my 8 year old decided he was going to share with me, rather than his brother...! If you only needed the double, then the room would be massive by London standards!
We were on the 5th floor and could see the top of the Shard from our window, because we were so high up the traffic noise did not bother us at all. The air con did wake me up once but it wasn't on for long and the room temp was perfect for me.
The breakfast was perfectly adequate, continental with sausages, scrambled egg and beans thrown in, although they do clear away bang on 10am, so make sure you're done by then!
Also, there is a hairdryer in the room, I wasn't sure and took my own, no need, theirs is fine.

I only visit London two or three time a year and my company imposes a fairly tight budget. However this was by far and away the best hotel room I've stayed at in London and staff were very friendly and welcoming which hasn't always been my experience at other London hotels. Its also only about 10 minutes walk to the city so no tubes to catch in the morning.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by KumarLCJ Not bad but with room for improvement.
My stay at the Holiday Inn was, to be frank, slightly disappointing.
Firstly, It must be noted that there were several good points about my stay. The staff were friendly, The room and bathroom were clean, and the hotel provided three keys for our stay which gave my friends and I the autonomy to move around independently from each other.
But , the clean bathroom was soon ruined because of a fault in the shower door which allowed fro water to leak out and wet the bathroom floor. On top of the dirt factor, this also made the floor slippery and we individually slipped more than once on the floor as we were getting out of the shower.
Another thing was the room itself. Whilst it was indeed clean and well maintained, it was cramped. Having paid the premium for the third person staying in the room, One would expect to be put in a slightly larger room. But all that was done was the stretching of a sofa bed in a corner of a normal room. This made it almost impossible to walk more than fave feet in the room, which made it very cramped. Not least because there were three adults sharing a room.
Another problem was a lack of a place to put the bags and clothes. There was no cupboard or shelf available. Meaning we had to put our bags on the floor. This made an already crowded room become almost impossible to manoeuvre in.

I've stayed here a few times, the rooms are good, modern and well looked after, it's in a great location, near the tube station and with lots of great restaurants and bars nearby. The only downside is the breakfast which is pretty rubbish, dry bread, dry croissants, horrible-looking scrambled eggs and disgusting-looking sausages (I didn't eat either, I'm vegetarian).

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MarkB14 Convenient and reasonable
The HI Express was conveniently located in easy walking distance of Old St tube station. It is on a busy road, but the room we had was at the rear of the property and it was very quiet.
The staff were very friendly and attentive, willing to help. We stayed a Friday and Saturday nights and the breakfast area was extremely busy on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, but we found somewhere to sit on both days and the layout allowed us to have breakfast in comfort despite the numbers there. The food was replenished frequently and tables cleared quickly.
We left our bags in the luggage room on Sunday after checking out - the system was relatively secure with the room being locked and a tag being applied to each bag. The receptionist only let you take your bag from the room if you had the second part of the numbered tag. It saved carting everything around London all day and a quick trip back to collect them before heading home gave us an extra hassle and bag free day.
The sofa bed our son slept on wasn't the most comfortable (and I wouldn't have liked to sleep on it), but he didn't moan and seemed to sleep well - with all the walking we did I guess we must have worn him out sufficiently!
A convenient location to get back to following going to a show on Saturday night.
Would I stay again - definitely yes!

Not the cheapest HIE I've stayed in but it met all the expectations I have for this brand. The room was quiet once the A/C was switched off and the decor and furnishings were to a good standard and well maintained by the chamber staff. Reception was always helpful and friendly.
The bar was prompt in service and never too busy.
Breakfast was well received and well stocked.
If I had a niggle it was the frugality of the comp tea and coffee in the rooms - but not enough to moan about it.

I booked two rooms (31/1/2014) for my friend and myself. Both rooms air conditioning internal fan was too loud and prevent even a deep sleeper from having a good sleep. Same complain come from my friend.
The heating system in the room take long time to work and not efficient enough to warm the room especially at early morning hours. I was using the express for many years and they provide excellent comfortable rooms but not this time.

My daughter and I were extremely pleased with the quality and size of our double bedroom. The reception staff were also very helpful, looking up directions and giving us a map of where we were located and where we wished to travel to.
This hotel is easily within walking distance from Liverpool Train Station where we had travelled to from Stansted Airport.
I would highly recommend this hotel for the price and quality provided.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by camciver Good hotel but air condition too noisy.
This is a nice hotel in a good location. My stay was spoiled by an unbearable noise from the air conditioning even when turned off. I did not get any sleep during my one night stay. The staff acknowledged there was a problem apparently caused when the hotel was refurbished, they apologised but could do nothing about it. Not up to the expected HI Express standards.
