I stayed here with my husband and daughter for 2 nights recently. The hotel is in a good location and we made use of their underground car park that was reasonably priced for London BUT you couldn't pre book it so that could have been a problem as it has approx 10 spaces.
The room was modern, clean but very basic with no cupboard space. The mattress was a bit uncomfortable but that might suits others taste. The double sofa bed was marginally better.
The restaurant area is small and the furniture simple and cheap looking. On both days we saw people walk away as there wasn't anywhere to sit to eat. Choice of buffet breakfast was limited and not that great. I don't think they have enough staff around to replemish stock, napkins were replaced by sheets of kitchen roll on both days.
The hotel reception staff were friendly and professional but if we stay in town again we won't return here and will opt for a hotel that is a bit less basic.

I enjoyed my stay at the Southward Hiexpress. The room was the usual fayre, but what stood out was the friendlyness of the staff. Everyone was genuinely friendly and very happy to help. I left my camera in the room and one phone call later, it was located and being posted back to me. I'd like to thank the staff involved. Great service indeed.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Irongloves I was here in 2007
We re-booked this hotel because of our most enjoyable stay in 2007, as our review title says.
This Southwark Holiday Inn Express is in the heart of an area re-build, quite exciting to notice the changes abound.
I suspect this hotel has had a make over since 2007 and is looking very sharp indeed. The staff are very obliging, and always willing to help.
We would stay in this hotel again.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by PatS54 Great place to stay
Booked this because it was economical and well-placed for our visit to The Globe Theatre. Really loved the area and the convenience of travel from the short train trip from Blackfriars to St Pancras for KIngs Cross to the Thames Clipper stop at Bankside Pier.
The hotel was welcoming, staff were lovely - even letting us check in early on arrival and keeping our luggage after checking out.
Room was good, big enough, lovely bathroom.
Breakfast was fine, would have liked more fresh fruit and fat free yogurt but otherwise can't complain. (It was free so don't feel as if I should!)
We will be back as long as we can afford it! (The rate we paid was half the rack rate ...)

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Rolaf Great for the money
My first stay here and I travel to London from Boston for work often. It is convenient to the airport (50 minutes via tube with one train change...that may not sound convenient, but it really is.)
The breakfast buffet is quite good. The neighborhood is safe and quiet (construction noise during the day, but that is almost everywhere in London.)
There are good dinner options within walking distance.
It is very convenient to the river and Tate.
Rooms are smallish, and there is no alarm clock. But they are clean, neat and well kept.
The staff were friendly, helpful, and always available.

Great location in the interesting South Bank area, just behind Tate Modern. Nice room, good value for money. Friendly and helpful staff. We felt welcome and so did our two children! We would have liked a playroom for the children though.

Our stay was work related and we were ready for a hastle free check in and good room. We were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and quality of the rooms. My colleague was allocated a single room instead of the double booked, however, we received a sincere apology from the reception guy and complimentary drinks. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly especially Charlie. will definatly stay here again.

Great location - we walked to London Eye, St. Paul's Cathedral, Tower of London, Parliament etc. Southbank is fun to walk along, lots of restaurants. Room was basic; small, but very clean (important!!!), and since we really only slept there, it was perfectly adequate. We weren't looking for luxury, we wanted affordable, and this was, we were there for a week. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I would certainly recommend this location.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by sputt21 Good hotel in a great location
My wife and I spent 1 night here in July and were delighted with the comfort, value and excellent staff especially Charlie. It is located within easy reach of the tube station & buses.Really nice restaurants and pubs in the near location with great cafes to have dinner in the evening. The hotel is spotless, as was our room, which was spacious and comfortable. One criticism is that there all washing liquids are the same liquid: shampoo, body wash, hand soap, etc.
The breakfast was very good and the hostess was efficient, attentive and extremely pleasant.Would definitely stay here again ,when we are in London

The day staff were very welcoming and the room was fairly standard, spacious and in good condition. However there was only one ceiling light (by the door) and I found the other end of the room a liitle dark.
I had problems with a non-functioning key card and a broken bed, but the card was fixed immediately and I was given another room.
Breakfast had a good choice of cold items, but I would have prefered slightly more choice with the cooked items. Everything was of good quality and everything was well stocked with the exception of the croissants which had all gone.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Arvo123 Dingiest rooms I have ever stayed in!
As a Platinum Card Holder I expected to be given more than a tiny single bed in an approximately 5ft x 7ft room - especially when the bill came to nearly £200!!! Had to request a room change, which was only marginally bigger with poorly-working air conditioning.

Fully up to our expectation of Holiday Inn Express. Some noise from trains which worried my wife but not me. Iy was very hot so really needed the windows open.
Convenient for the Tate Modern, The Shard and the Underground... and much more.
And room in the car park (strangely not mentioned explicitly on the hotel details).

The hotel was your standard experience for a Holiday Inn Express.
The hotel was clean, well presented with friendly staff.
The best thing about this hotel was the location, located at the end of Blackfriars bridge and a 3 minute walk to the Tate Modern.

Myself, my wife and our three kids recently stayed for a full week. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, from the front desk people to the cleaning staff to the breakfast servers, everyone we encountered went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Its also a great location, within walking distance of many popular sites. And, having the breakfast option makes the room a better value than most of the other hotels we looked at.

Stayed for four nights and the location is great close to Southwark tube and ten minutes either side of the Shard and the Old Vic Theatre.
Hotel is a typical Holiday Inn express, buffet breakfast but the staff are so friendly and cannot do enough for you and the hotel is spotless. Great service and cleanliness are always welcome.
Only downside is there is not a proper bar but there is a lovely pub about 200 metres away called the mad hatter
