The hotel location was very convenient to every place I wanted to get to in Santa Barbara (I was there on a business trip). The room was clean, the staff were very nice. Pros: They had a balcony lounge on the second floor that had a nice view of the hills--it made for a great meeting place for colleagues.
Cons: My room, which was on the second floor facing a busy street, was very noisy at night (there was a brew pub across the street). Also, no fitness center inside the hotel.

My two teenage daughters and I accompanied my husband on his business trip in Santa Barbara. We were very happy with this hotel because of the great location being walking distance to many shops and restaurants and also walking distance to the Pier and Harbor and to a nice beach. The front desk staff was extremely helpful with my many questions about directions and recommendations of places to see and restaurants to try. I felt very safe in the hotel which had a cozy feeling as it wasn't too big. The second floor balcony looks out on the mountains and palm trees and was a very pleasant place to sit for breakfast and to relax. The rooms were nicely appointed and clean. The parking was close by and safe. I would definitely return to this hotel on my next visit to the area.

The hotel is in a prime location to State Street and an easy bike ride or walk to the Pier. Just be aware, this is not a typical Holiday Inn Express. It is a historic building and that does not mean it has lots of charm. It's just an old building.
The staff was very friendly and helpful, they have free bikes to use, and the parking was easy... although $14 a day was a bit outrageous.
Make sure you get a room on the third floor in the back. the historic nature of this hotel means that all the walls and windows are paper thin. In a previous stay, I was kept awake most of the night by the late night bar hoppers. (room was on the first floor facing the street) My most recent room (third floor in the back) was very peaceful. I didn't hear any street noise. The city of Santa Barbara should allow them to update the windows. It would change everything.
There is nothing specifically wrong with this hotel. Just know what you are getting in advance. If you are expecting an experience like you would find at one of the many new Holiday Inn Express' this will not be it.
Great staff. Great location. Good rooms.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Santa Barbara. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very quiet. The second floor balcony is an excellent place to drink coffee, read a book and get some work done while you are gazing at the mountains. Wonderful stay!
