Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by The bad in Carlsbad My fiancée and I decided to stay at the HIE in Carlsbad during our trip in California. Whenever traveling we request a room with fabric softener free linen since I have an allergy. Not once has this been a problem until now. We requested this when we booked, and followed up twenty-four hours before checking in. At which time the clerk working the desk told us that she was unsure if the linen was washed with fabric softener and suggested we bring our own. My fiancée informed the clerk that we hadn’t had any problems like this before, that we couldn’t bring linens and requested that a note be made on our reservation, but the desk clerk was unwilling to document this and suggested calling back during the day. My fiancée called back the following day and was able to confirm with a different clerk working the desk that fabric softener was used on linens and that our room would have softener free linens, eight hours prior to our anticipated check in time. When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted by the same clerk my fiancée had spoken to the evening prior in her attempt to ensure a fabric softener free room. She said our room was ready and that the linen was fabric softener free; she had checked with her manager. We arrived in our room and found that the bed was only partially prepared. (A flat sheet was on the bed, in place of a fitted sheet, and all other linens and blankets were stacked on a nearby chair.) Already exhausted, we went back to the counter. We told the clerk that our bed was only partially made. She stated ” those are the new linens that were delivered to your room.” She did not comprehend the fact that most of the bed linen was on a chair as opposed to the bed. After another fifteen minutes of further questioning, she again became confused about the fabric softener situation. I suppose it was lost in translation. After what suspiciously seemed like belittlement bordering on derision, we decided it wasn’t worth the hassle and wound up changing rooms. For a hotel that was supposed to be new, there were a few problems. Firstly, the bed was annoyingly squeaky as if it hadn’t been installed correctly. The slightest move resulted in a loud squeak, contributing to less than ideal sleep. Second, there were not any privacy placards for the rooms. I went as far to use my broken Spanish to try and get one from the housekeeper, to which she replied they had none. Therefore, every morning, I needed to tell the housekeeper we did not require service. The pool was rather un-kept, and the hot tub was dingy in appearance. Besides the one problematic desk clerk, the staff seemed very pleasant and content. The room was clean, and if not for the aforementioned problems would not have been terrible accommodations for the price we paid. Nothing has been done to remedy the poor stay, and I have little confidence that anything will be remedied after receiving such an apathetic response. It is quite unfortunate, and upsetting, since we usually prefer to stay at HIE. September 12, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 Bronowski Wedding party We enjoyed the stay the rooms were good. But as I stated it would have been nice to have more of our party closer together and closer to the hospitality room. We also found out later that you had a bigger room, but unfortunately we didn't ask and it was not offered for a nice hospitality room. Over all very nice Kunal and Karen were very nice to work with. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Short Visit for Legoland My family and I had a recent stay at the Carlsbad Holiday Inn Express. 2 adults/2 kids ages (8 and 10). We had two queen size beds on the 1st floor. We had some minor issues during our stay: First our room was on the 1st floor right across from housekeeping. Each morning it sounded like someone was trying to get in our room when their carts would bump our door. Also on shippment mornings their deliver person left pallets in front of our door. However being on the first floor we had easy access to the pool, parking, and the internet was running great. The pool was nice we were there mid week till the following Monday so the pool wasn't packed. However, they ran out of towels at times and you'd have to go to the front desk to ask for more towels. They had a gazebo but that area needed massive cleaning. Dusty and dead bees in that area. Also the jacuzzi area had dead bees under the pool lift. Breakfast was nice, kids loved it, bought some hot chocolate powder at the grocery store nearby as they didn't have any hot drinks for the kids but it's you typical continental breakfast and the person in charge was great in refilling the area. Had to do some laundry and they have 2 washer/2 dryers coin opperated (you can get change from the front desk) on site however you have some of those other guests that just leaves their laundry there way past the load. Other than those issues our stay was great , we'd stay here again on future trips. September 11, 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Checkin Smooth but no washcloths The checkin was smooth and the lady at the counter was so sweet and friendly. I saw her many times over the course of my stay and she always was smiling and friendly. The only issue I had was the last night of my stay. Housekeeping did not replace the washcloths in the bathroom, so I had none. I called the front desk at 10:30 p.m. and told them, they assured me some would be brought up. After two hours of waiting, I gave up and used a hand towel. Still can't understand why the washcloths weren't re-stocked by housekeeping. September 9, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great rooms and friendly staff We had a great stay. The kids loved the pool and hot tub. The room was quiet at night. My daughter lost her iPod and the staff called us the next day to let us know they found it! September 6, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A fabulous brief get-away This particular hotel exceeds my expectations. The room is very clean and so as the surroundings. Free ample breakfast is very appealing and convenient for the guests. I'm a BIG FAN! September 5, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Breakfast bar and maid service Breakfast turkey sausage was very dry and not flavorable. We ate at a restaurant on Monday instead of the breakfast bar. Very crowded. Also our room wasn't cleaned. September 4, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by fantastic family friend hotel for the money My family felt welcome and comfortable in this hotel. Not only was it set up well for business travelers but for the family traveling as well. The children spend hours in the hotel pool and as it was in the summer there were other kids to swim with. The laundry room for guests to use is a great amenity for travelers but we did not use it. We will definitely come back. August 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Hotel Stay We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Carlsbad during a trip to LEGO Land. The hotel was easy to find, had ample parking, and the exterior and grounds were well kept. The staff was very friendly and helpful during our stay. The free breakfast had a good variety each morning of well prepared food. August 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good location and great service Good hotel for the price. NIce comfortable rooms and free breakfast, can't beat the price. Only thing I notice bad was the room bathroom floor. The tile grout was very dirty. I think this should be deep clean at least once a month. other then that, the rest of the room was clean. August 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Clean and great location for Legoland Less than a few miles to LEGOLAND and Carlsbad Beach. It was new, very clean, and the free breakfast with many options was a nice treat. I slept very comfortably with no issues. Will be sure to come to this Hotel again when we return to this area. August 19, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Enjoyable stay Once again Holiday Inn Express has lived up to its reputation of a hotel of quality and comfort. Looking forward to staying at one of the facilities again the next time we travel. Thank you. August 13, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not up to snuff in Carlsbad Upon arrival for our 6 day vacation we were impressed with the hotel. It looked very nice and was everything we come to expect from a Holiday Inn Express and t was in a good location. When checking in I requested 3 keys one for each of the occupants of the room. I was told that I was allowed two keys and no more than two. I tried explaining that we would all be in and out at different times and it would be an inconvenience to only have two keys. Front desk attendant explained that if was hotel policy to issue a max of two keys per room. This necessitated a situation where we had to hide a key on property so all three people could have access to the room as needed. As a Priority Club member I stay in IHG brand hotels exclusively when I can. I usually get a nice bag with a bottle of water and cookies upon check in. I am usually greeted by the front desk clerk every time I enter the hotel. At many locations I get a bag with water and cookies every evening. At this location I was greeted most of the time with a simple" hello and how is your day." which was very nice. I did not get my priority club bag of water and cookies at check in. I saw the bags behind the desk but I was not offered one when I checked in. I was very unimpressed with the service from the start. The room was nice clean and everything I have come to expect. Clean bath, comfortable bed and spacious room. Our first morning we went down to breakfast at 845 only to find the entire room filled with people eating. There was no where to sit and the food line was at least 30 people long. Rather than fight the crowd we simply waited outside for it to empty out. At 920 we went back inside to find the line and seating had not changed. While we waited in line for food it became 9:30 at which time the food worker began shutting off the display case lighting and stopped putting additional food out on the line. For the most part the food was gone. I want to emphasize that there were at least 11 people still waiting to get food at this time. We got what little we could and the food handler replenished a few items at the request of some of the disgruntled guests. The remaining five days the food service improved as a large group checked out. I was displeased to see that the country gravy that usually accompanies the biscuits never made its way out to the food line. One afternoon we went out to enjoy the pool and spa. What we found was rather uninviting. Lounge chairs were over turned on the deck and the cushions on many of the chairs were tattered torn and very unsightly. Two hotel employees came out to replace towels and walked right by the overturned furniture as if it was the norm at this hotel. I ended up straightening the furniture and got a few nice comments from the other guests for my efforts. On the 3rd day we slept in til 10 am. we seemed to have missed the maid service. I took our three towels later in the morning to the maid in the hall to get them replaced. Yes, i took 3 towels to be replaced. She handed me two in replacement. I politely asked for a third and was told I could only have two. I showed her that I was giving her three and I wanted three in return." No", I was told "only two could be given in return". Needless to say I had to go to the pool to get a couple more towels. Arrg! We really enjoy Carlsbad and visit the San Diego area at least twice a year. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be returning to this hotel anytime soon. August 12, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A very nice stay for our family This is an excellent hotel for families. It is close the the freeway and easy to get to downtown San Diego or Camp Pendleton. It is also near major attractions such as Legoland. There is a shopping area across the street, and you can walk to the beach in 10 minutes. The pool area is large, and nicely maintained. There are towels available, and lots of seating. The one drawback is that the wireless internet service is lousy in the rooms. It is better in the lobby, but generally only when the hotel is empty. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice stay Upon check-in the front desk clerk upgraded our room. We had a corner room on the top floor with a view. It was perfect for our needs: quiet, clean and comfortable. We really liked how the room had a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. We didn't know the hotel offered a daily HOT breakfast - that was a plus! Though it had many bready items, it was still good. The staff was great at replenishing the food items and tidying up - hard to do when it was especially busy but they did a pretty good job. The pool area was also nice and comfortable, with good seating areas and towels for everyone. It's a small area but it wasn't crowded at all. Parking was very easy too. The staff was great and the hotel is very family friendly. If I could make a suggestion, it would be to install a ceiling fan in the rooms so it won't get stuffy at night. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay! August 9, 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great location. Nice property Excellent location with easy on-off access to I-5 and the beach. Easy walk to South Carlsbad State Beach which is a nice beach with smaller crowds AND bathrooms! Also liked that a grocery store, drug store, bank and several restaurants were right across the street to pick up items we forgot. All rooms, lobby and pool area were clean and in good shape. Really enjoyed our stay, but if there were any negatives it would be the breakfast. Same options every morning (we stayed 4 nights) and seating was limited after 8:00 am. Other than that my entire family enjoyed the hotel and would stay again in the future. July 24, 2014
