Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 Great place to stay
We stayed at the Downtown Ashley River Holiday Inn while visiting Charlestown. It was a great place to stay as it started our days with a great breakfast offering and provided a clean, quiet room for our evenings and sleeping. We appreciated and made use of the refrigerator and microwave in the room. All staff were extremely courteous and responsive to our needs.
We felt that the cost was reasonable and the Inn met our needs while visiting Charleston.
The only negatives were minor - the room coffee maker needed to be moved (the floor was the best option) to plug it in, the TV was small for the room size, the room lighting (lamps) was poor, and more functional, comfortable chairs would have been appreciated.
Also, the trolley availability and ease of use was not as we expected, so we ended up driving into the downtown areas instead of using it. We also thought we would have greater walking access to downtown, but the surrounding highways deterred us.
Overall, we were very pleased with the value we received. If you have a car available and wish your hotel to be a base (rather than a spa-like destination) for your visit, then this is an excellent choice!

This HI has the smallest rooms of any HI that I have visited. Just barely enough room for a King bed. The only upgrade available was a room on the 8th floor. Located close to the Ashley River but you can not see the river. Surrounding area is not safe to walk at night. A 10 minute drive to downtown for shopping and sightseeing. Plenty of parking decks downtown. Service and personnel were average for a HI. Issue with hot water in bathroom- sink hot water would burn you- shower hot water was just barely warm enough to call it Hot. Will not stay at this HI again.
