Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by TF1300 Affordable, clean place to stay
The hotel has undergone updates that have helped to freshen up the appearance. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The pillow cases are marked - firm, soft, etc. with plenty of options to choose from, which helps to ensure a more restful night of sleep.

Hotel has had three water problems in the past month by staff's admission. Contengency plans should be better developed as a result.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by foxpoint99 Very comfortable place to stay
The hotel has a wonderful staff from the front desk to the breakfast personnel. The location is so close to everything that we are able to walk to any place we need to go. The room is nice and always clean when I return from work, And the internet speed had greatly improved and is easy to gain access. I really look forward to staying here each week.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by JMS0716 Nice, Convenient Hotel
Hotel was under renovation when we arrived so we expected some slight inconvenience. The only true issue was the operation of only one elevator which was a bit annoying but not a huge deal for us. The room was mostly clean but the front of the bathroom vanity looked as though it hadn't been wiped down in quite a while. Beds were comfortable and the room was reasonably appointed. The heat was very inconsistent probably because the thermostat was across the room. The bigger negatives were that housekeeping staff knocked on our door not once but twice on a Saturday morning--the first time before 9 am and the second time before 9:30 even though checkout was at 12. Also, I had an issue with the blow dryer so I contacted guest services who told me someone would be up to take care of it immediately. I waited for quite a while then I finally finagled with the cord and outlet for several minutes and managed to get it to work long enough to get my hair dried. No one ever came to address the issue in the 1 1/2 hours that followed the call.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Grandma76 Comfortable stay, but . . . .
All in all, our stay was just fine. We have stayed at this same hotel a number of times on our drive from Chicago to the Carolinas. Our room was comfortable, the service was good, breakfast was good - as always. But this stay had a new feature. We were in a room marked by a plaque on the door as Handicapped. There was a button next to the door, with instructions to press it for 5 seconds. The key card would not work in the door until we had pressed and held this button as instructed. When the button was pressed, the fire alarm went off in the room, and continued to blare until we stopped pressing the button. This was pretty startling to whoever was in the room until we got used to it. We will continue to stay in this hotel in the future - the location is great - but next time, if there is a buzzer on the room door, I'm going to ask for a different room. :-)

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Seri67 Good location, staff uninterested
My sister and I stayed at this Holiday Inn for two reasons, one is I am a IHG member and I like getting the points. Two, we were going to a concert and the hotel is within walking distance, so that was a plus. It was full that night, I am assuming from the concert. There were two girls working the check inn. As I was checking inn, they weren't looking at the people that were checking in, they were just rushing through and trying to hurry and get us out of the way. Not very professional at all. One clerk stated since I was a Gold card member I got to choose 3 bags of chips. Really? That was my only odd experience, the rest of the stay was pleasant.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by JB-JB So so stay
The room itself was fine. Not the cleanest and a stain on the wall, but dark and quiet. The hotel lools quite rundown from the outside, but inside is better. Breakfast is so-so -- second day juice was like water. My problem was that I stayed when the hot water system was being upgraded. No one told me this when booking or when I arrived, so essentially I had cold showers. And when I mentioned this, I didn't get an apology or offer of compensation. The desk person just said she would call maintenance. I think you should get 50% off if there's no hot water -- it's one of the essential elements of a good hotel stay, and the staff response to my mentioning it was underwhelming.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by JB-JB Cold water, poor breakfast etc
The water was cold. I was NOT made aware that the water system was being repaired / replaced when I booked or when I arrived. This is the sort of thing that should get you a reduced rate. I'm not even sure if this really the reason, because the front desk person called maintenance as I was leaving to report it. But maybe the staff didn't know either. This staff person (Sunday Dec 29) didn't say sorry for the lack of hot water or offer any compensation. The men on the front desk Friday and Saturday were friendly. The Sunday morning woman was terse. Orange juice on second day was watery. Stain of some sort on bedroom wall.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Mountaineer80 Average room & good service
The room was no different than a room I had the next night in a chain motel. Way over-priced for the value. The breakfast was mediocre..cold gravy and greasy bacon. The OJ was watered down. The staff was friendly. If the room was about $60 cheaper would have been more of a value. The only real plus was the closeness to the civic center

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by MKC1940 Nice rooms, close to mall and civic center BUT.......
The room was nice and clean other than a garbage can that still had garbage in it from the previous night. I'm not to picky, I can tolerate that. When we check in the staff was wonderful, very friendly. We stayed there to go shopping and to a concert. After the concert approx 11:30 pm, I called the front desk to see if they could recommend a restaurant that delivers because with it being Charleston, that town does not have the best reputation and I didn't want to be out that late with my daughter. The gentleman that answered the phone was completely RUDE. Was a smart mouth punk. Then he hung up on me. Well, me being the southern, polite country girl that I am, I went to the front desk and confronted him. He was even more rude in person. Because of him, I will not go back and will not recommend that hotel to anyone.

We stayed there the night of a Jerry Seinfield show at the Municipal Auditorium. It was close to the auditorium and we had planned on walking there and back from hotel. It was raining cats and dogs and hotel sent us and others in a shuttle van to auditorium. All staff were very friendly and helpful in every way. Will definitely stay there again and have already recommended to others.

This was the Holiday that we wanted to stay at but in error had made reservations at a different location. I was using IHG Rewards and James at the front desk helped me in getting my reservations switched to this location. Our rooms where clean, beds comfortable and the staff where so friendly and helpful! We will use this facility again!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GDean Hotel is great.
While having stayed in multiple other Charleston, WV, hotels, this is the first time I stayed at Holiday Inn Express. I found it more than I anticipated. The room was nearly immaculate and my night's rest one of the best I have encountered while traveling. A small amount of road noise due to the location is the only negative there was and that did not interfere with my rest. I stayed two nights and found the staff exceptional and the atmosphere great for the range of services they offer. Will definitely stay again!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by GaryJ70 Poor overall experience
Were given a room initially that had not yet been cleaned as bed was unmade and there were pills left on the bathroom counter near the sink. Given another room but toilet was stopped up. Called desk and they brought plunger for me to us rather than doing it for me. Asked evening manager for local eating establishments and was told there were some in nearby mall area but only pointed in direction of mall ...not very helpful and not hospitable. Overall the worst experience we have had at a Holiday Inn Express despite numerous stays at others over the years.

I had a bad night, cold and flu plus the AC unit wasn't working properly. Very noisy, cold air and even the staff person wasn't capable to fix it. All of that after midnight.
A bad night.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Music61 Very Outdated
Worst Holiday Inn I've stayed in. Hotel, although clean, was very outdated. Not nearly up to Holiday Inn standaeds related to bedding, blankets, linens. Parking, although free, was terrible - very limited. There was no heat in the bathroom, which was on the opposite end of the room.
There are many other better choices in downtown Charleston.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by kaelby Love the in-room microwave/refrigerator
I like to travel with my own home cooked meals that are healthier and less expensive, so having the microwave and refrigerator in the room is a real plus. I'm sorry someone had broken the little door off the freezer because I either had all frozen food or all just refrigerated food. My celery got ruined because it was frozen, but my frozen food thawed and I had to throw some it out. (I changed the refrig. temperature so everything wasn't frozen.)
Otherwise, 134 is a great room - quiet and away from traffic, yet you don't need to use the elevator. Perhaps a little small, and dark. Every room in that hotel is now too dark, and much of that is caused by the decor and closing off the windows. The chairs in the room aren't as comfortable as they used to be, but better than some other hotel chains.
I do think Charleston has the most friendly staff of any hotel.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by jkm3 I have stayed here often
They have just finished (within the year) a major remodeling. I have always liked this hotel; it is close to about everything. I like the new look to the rooms and the outside. Although there is no smoking (I'm a smoker) they have fixed the side exit up quite nicely for this and have a bench, under roof that you can smoke at. I keep hoping they would put in a Jacuzzi but so far no luck. I guess that is the two pit falls. The beds are comfortable, I even researched the mattress brand they have so I could get one for my home.

This hotel has a great staff who truly care about you being satisfied. If there is any problem with anything, they are eager to make it right. The location is so close to many places to eat and shop. From Outback to Wendys...you can find anything within walking distance. The free breakfast will delight anyone with a good selection and great taste. I look forward to breakfast everyday. The only con would have to be the internet. It is very inconsistent and often shuts down completely for a few minutes before coming back up. The speed can be excellent one second and poor the next. But overall, this is a very comfortable hotel

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by chem2013 Fundamentals Lacking
The one highlight of my stay at this property was the good nature and warmth of the man at the front desk when I checked-in. Other than him, it was at best a fair-to-good stay.
There was no toilet paper on the roll, and the trash can meant for the bathroom was sitting out by the closet near the door to the hallway. The room had an appearance that whoever was assigned to clean it that day was in a rush.
The young woman at the front desk the morning I checked out seemed about as interested in her guests as a vegetarian would be in a t-bone steak.
The breakfast was average. Every carton of milk was set to expire that very day. They obviously don't put much effort into keeping their dairy products fresh.
The property is in serious need of upgrading and rooms could use a good deep cleaning. I won't be staying here next time I'm in Charleston.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Herdalum86 GREAT LOCATION FOR CIVIC CENTER EVENTS
This hotel is literally right across the street from the Charleston Civic Center. Parking lot is attended on concert night so only registered guests have access to parking, Beat the traffic and the drive home afterwards! Hotel is modern, the rooms are spacious, and the breakfast has all of the usual HIE features, The Charleston Towne Center Mall is only a short walk, as well.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by pam1961 Great guest relations!
First of all, let me say this was our first stay here. We chose it for it's close proximity to the Civic Center. We were very pleased from our first encounter with the staff. I had to call for directions, more than once, and was assisted by front desk staff, James. He was so patient and kind and continued to be kind and helpful throughout our stay. We also left something behind and had to call back. The staff there was very helpful and had our item shipped to us quickly. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice place. The bed was very comfortable and our party was pleased with the hot breakfast. Hope to return in the future...especially if RASCAL FLATTS come back to town!!

Love the location. Close to the civic center (across the street) along with the Newtown Mall adjacent to the civic center. Close to the river walking path and many places to eat. What more could you ask. If there is anything you need, the hotel staff is always eager to help you. Very relaxed atmosphere and always a great breakfast.
