Overall experience is ok. the breakfast spread is very good for a complimentary breakfast. The room was ok only, not fantastic. Location is not bad. Parking is expensive, if possible, should have been complimentary to elite members.

My wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at Umhlanga for 11 nights in April 2013 as we were visiting family in the area. The hotel is in a great location, some 5 minutes walk from the Gateway Shopping Mall, and a nice 10/15 minute walk downhill to the bars, restaurants, and the Umhlanga seafront (although a taxi would be advisable in the heat on the way back as it is all uphill!). There is a lovely seaview from the front of the hotel, and we often had our buffet breakfasts on the balcony outside the breakfast room enjoying the views. The rooms were very clean, and had tv, hair dryer, tea & coffee making facilities. We asked for a seaview room on arrival due to the length of our stay, and the management quickly switched things round to accommodate. The staff were all very friendly, the bar and breakfast rooms were spacious and airy, and the hotels restaurant, The Butchers Block, had a great choice of food and wine, and was of superb quality and value (300g fillet steak for approx. £10 - lovely). The swimming pool was quite small, but we never had the need to use it as we were out and about everyday. Umhlanga itself is a lovely centre, with lots of choices of bars, restaurants, cafes etc. If I was to pick faults at all, and I am not, there is not much storage space in the rooms if you are staying for as long as we did, but not many people stay for more than 2 or 3 nights I suppose. I would definitely use this hotel again. If visiting Umhlanga, I can also recommend the high tea at The Oyster Box on the seafront. Booking is required, but what a wonderful setting and spread for approx., £14/15 per head.

I enjoyed some how to stay at your hotels. The rooms are comfortable and the staff at the reception they are quite fast then Protea. I enjoyed the breakfast although I could not have much variety as I am muslim and could not have halaal meal.

Comfortable and smart. Butchers Block Restaurant is a major plus. Hotel bar/ wine selection and DSTV package needs upgrading to improve.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Mates Holiday inn going downhill
I have stayed in the hotel several times and I have to say the experience is going downhill. The staff is incompetent. The maintenance guys didn't manage to fix our leaking shower in 4 tries and I have been told several times at the hotel bar that tey have no red wine and I should go to next door restaurant and get it there. Rooms are still nice but you can see lack of maintenance erywhere.

My colleague and I had a fantastic time at this property. It's in a great location and the views on the ocean side are breathtaking. Service at the hotel was fantastic...the only drawback was the internet service. I've come to expect to pay for wifi access outside the United States, but the access at this property wasn't even trustworthy. I purchased week-long passes, but there were multiple days where it was completely down or unavailable. As a business traveler, I found this unacceptable, but overall, the stay was good.

Pros :
- Nice and tidy rooms
- Nice breakfast (just what is needed)
- Nice staff (gentle and smiling, from the desk to the housekeepers)
Cons :
- No recognition for priority members (I do not think the desk looked at it even if I checked in with my platinium card, no upgrade, no lately check-out)
- No illimited wireless access (30MB free per day per device is just not enough !)
- Restaurant seems closed for dinner !
- Plase check there is no football team in the hotel during your stay, otherwise you will be annoyed by some youg stupid young people shouting in the elevators (female staff seems too busy beeing picked up to notice that)
- No fitness center
- Entrance door location is quite strange: on one side you have the parking and the desk, on the other side the entrance door 2 floors below … I do not understand how the architect built this hotel …

Though a bit small, room nicely done with great beds and good AC. Superb breakfast buffet and friendly, helpful staff throughout 3 day stay. Short distance to beach with great views of ocean from our room. Close to great choice of restaurants and major roadways. Hugely nicer than any HI Express in US.
