We have stayed in a few HIE hotels recently, including this one, so we knew it was a good hotel and a great location (for us). The young lady on reception during most of our stay was always helpful and friendly.
When we checked out, I forgot my alarm clock. I contacted the hotel's front desk, they had the clock. I asked them to post it and I would pay the cost and they were happy to do this (although I still haven't received it - getting a bit concerned now!).
Two niggles - firstly the wi-fi. My new phone, my tablet and laptop
could pick up no signal at all in our room. In the hotel lounge/dining area, I just about got a connection - very slow and
kept dropping out.
Second, and more important, the double bed we had sunk in the
middle. You would roll together in the night and it was an uphill
struggle to get to the edge! It was like sleeping on the side of a
hill! I reported this to reception in the morning but was
disappointed to find we still had the same mattress/base
combination that evening when we arrived back. That kind of
night's sleep is not what you need before a 9 hour drive home!
Disappointing but it is not putting me off HIE - I will be in another
of your hotels this evening - let's hope it has a good bed!

We stayed for one night. The room is very clean. The staff is very helpful and kind. The donwside is that there weren't so many choices for breakfast and didn't have enough seats for guests on a busy Sunday morning. But, we only paid 51 pounds for staying one night. You get what you paid. Overall, I'll recommend this hotel for people looking for a clean, budget hotel.

Really good night spent at this hotel. Staff friendly and helpful. Limited choice on dinner menu but got something we enjoyed and very nice.
Small negatives, bed too soft for us and wifi only in reception and restaurant.

WELL WHAT CAN I SAY, THE STAFF ARE VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFULL, THE ROOMS ARE VERY CLEAN N SPACEY, THE BED WAS A BIT SOFT FOR MY LIKEING? BUT STILL DIDNT STOP ME GETTING A GOOD SLEEP, WOULD STAY HERE AGAIN WITH PLEASURE.

I reserved the Hotel quite early and saw directly after my reservastion i reserved the wrong hotel. We were going to the bangers at arena essex. i thought this hotel was near the track but this was the hotel we had before when we visited the track at ipswich. The day after my reservation i called to change or cancel my reservation. the hotel didn't want to help me with my problem and i had to pay for my reservation for 2 nights. we only staid 1 night. we arrived saturdaymorning at 8.15 hour at the hotel and checked in. i told the lady behind the desk that we only stay one night instead of 2 (were we had paid for) and asked if it was possible to get an breakfast on that time. she didn't want to coorporate and told us we couldn't get an breakfast. Generally it is an good hotel but i expected a bit more co-operation.

The bed was very uncomfortable. Throughout the night there were several power cuts - reception was not very helpful and explained it was the area and theres nothing he could do. The TV doesnt allow you to change the source so no point in taking a dvd player to connect up. Not much the signal in room.
Positives - clean, shower is good, service provided when asked for additional items eg pillows.

On Arrival I was given my room key. When I entered the room it had a very bad odour of smoke. Which within minutes started to give me a headache. I used the telephone in the room & rang down to reception to enquire if this was a smoking room. I was told that all rooms are non smoking but in the past it used to be a smoking room & that all rooms have been reconditioned. Unfortunately I disagreed as there was still a very obvious smell of smoke. I was told that I could change rooms. I then had to take my luggage back down to reception to collect the new room keys.
The room was better. The following day when I got back from work about 18.30 I entered my room to find that it hadn't been serviced. I rang reception immediately to enquire why the room hadn't been serviced. I was told that someone would ring me within 30 mins about this. I waited very patiently but nobody rang. It was approaching 10pm when I walked towards the reception to say that nobody had contacted me & how I wasn't happy about this. The receptionist replied "have a nice evening" which wasn't the sort of evening I was able to have due to the lack of service. Moments later after I got back to my room the phone rang & I was given a lousy apology & was then asked if there was anything I needed replacing towels etc. At that point I was extremely annoyed & upset as it was already late having had a tiring day at work & I didn't want to be disturbed having waited all that time for a member of staff to have sorted something out. I felt very uncomfortable the coffee mugs were from the night before. Not clean it really put me off.
I have no intention of staying here again. I thoroughly regret making the booking & certainly will not be recommending it either. Being a platinum memeber I am very dissapointed with the level of service & efficiency of the staff in dealing with what was a straight forward matter.
Overall my stay here was dissapointing from start to finish. I have never experienced this any other hotels. within the IHG group.

Very friendly, helpful staff. Very comfortable room and excellent bathroom.
Breakfast was disappointing. Very cheap quality bread and sausages. More staff needed to ensure tables are cleared more quickly.

After having to move out of our home due to a fire, the staff were very helpful to our need over the week stay. It was all we could ask for before we were able to move in to other accommodation. Thank you from the three children, my Wife & me too.

The hotel was clean and staff were excellent.
The bed was truly awful, far too soft and therefore neither myself nor my husband had a good nights sleep
Shower was pathetic despite being labelled a power shower
We did not complain at the time, as we were too tired and just wanted to go home
Breakfast was uninspiring, and the scrambled eggs and sausages were not at all appetising, as a qualified chef I couldn't bring myself to eat them.
So we had to make do with the croissant etc, its a good job the breakfast is 'free', as I certainly wouldn't pay for it

My husband and I with two young children stayed one night on arrival there was no cot set up which we had asked for, we had to remake our bed as this had been done in such a rush the bottom sheet was no where near the top of bed, having two young children in a family room we expected a bath but got a shower so our children had to go without a bath that night. We had to travel into Colchester for our evening meal as the hotel only provided bar food in which having a 1 yr old couldn't eat the food and they didn't serve till after 630 which is too late for our children. The actual beds were comfortable but once cot was up there was no room, the facilities are poor as there is nothing a young family can do while there. The breakfast was poor with not much of a selection. This hotel is ok for a stop gap between journeys but not if u have children as nothing to entertain them.

Breakfast - Free? Crumbs it was awful. Toaster wouldn't toast, sausages were tasteless, scrambled eggs were probably egg reconstitutes. Awful....

Distinct lack of storage was booked in for Five nights had to live out of suitcases during the stay . Breakfast was of poor standard Scrambled eggs dry and Sausages Burnt Continual lack of Cutlery Tables not being cleared, unable to cope when busy
Wi-Fi not available in rooms as promised. On arrival and departure reception staff were very abrupt never recognised as a priority customer

We stayed for just one night and were treated very well by staff at check in, with a comfortable and clean room (showers only in this hotel but extra large shower cubicles). The bed was comfortable, the temperature and noise level of the room was fine (we faced away from the main road) Breakfast was normal Holiday Inn Express fare and very nice for that - we have already booked to return.

The staff made it value for money. Told large wedding party on site and advised of time to eat.
The room was very comfortable and the shower in the bathroom super.
Would stop again no problem.

The biggest problem with this hotel was that at Sunday morning breakfast one TV was blaring out Match of the Day, the other was competing with Sky News and to top it all off there was the background piped music. So the chance of a quiet, relaxing breakfast was nil, the only person watching the TV was the waiter so you wonder whose benefit it was for?
At my departure I reported a bad water leak in the bathroom which was met with no apology or enquiry as to whether it affected my stay. I was just told it would be entered in the maintenance book. I think I will look for somewhere else in future especially as you cannot get Wi-Fi in your room. Hello 21st century.

On arrival, staff at reception very abrupt, I put this down to staff having had a long day and already stressed out as we arrived late in the evening. Though there was a personalised welcoming message on the television screen in the room which I thought was rather nice. The sofa bed was already opened and laid for us, this made the room rather cramped and space restricted.
The shower was quite modern and very spacious and also clean. The bed was very disappointing, as the mattress could only be described as the cheapest they could find, very springy and very uncomfortable, I came away with a back ache.
there was only 2 teabags, 2 cups and 3 milk (which I found rather odd). My husband had to go downstairs to collect sugar and more milk for us. My boooking indicated that I have 2 kids with us, one would think that some hot chocolates drinks would be in the room for the children. the room was very hot during the night, we all had an uncomfortable night, my husband tried to open the windows, but it was very stiff, he had to go downstairs to the reception to ask what could be done as the phone/intercom in the room wasn't functioning. There were no mobile network, our mobile phones were out of action for the duration of our stay.
Wi-fi was limited to the bar area and even then one have to move the device around to get any signal.

We were pleasantly surprised that we could drive out of the hotel and into the countryside without going onto the A12 again. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Everywhere was very clean, and the bed comfortable. The only bad thing was: The standard of food available in the evening was VERY expensive, and not that good. We ate in on the first evening, as we didn't know the area. Apart from that, our stay was good and we would recommend it to anyone.

This was the second time I had stayed in this hotel.It's a very clean modern hotel with lovely double showers. The first time my husband and I stayed I had a very bad night due to roll together on the cheap mattress.Breakfast was nice with enough choice and ample amount. On the most recent stay I asked for a room with a sofa bed just in case the bed was bad again.it did indeed prove to bed very springy. I unrolled the sofa bed but it must've been the cheapest sofa bed available. You could see the spring outline on the fabric with no padding. The breakfast was not as good this time.The bowls were dirty & the fruit bowl had mouldy oranges in. If they changed the beds this would be a very good value hotel. We also couldn't get the free wifi advertised.

Very comfortable hotel. Drawback is it is very isolated from dining and shopping and tourist venues. A 12 pound taxi ride from Colchester station. Would be better for someone with a car.

I paid for Come Dine On Us which states on the website included is a Three Course Meal. When we tried to order we were told by the Bar Staff that it only included a Two course Meal so I got my daughter to send me a copy so I could prove this which is not acceptable. We then tried to order drinks and was told there was no White Wine, unheard of as almost everyone drinks White Wine.
The staff were slow and when we arrived no one was at reception as she was serving in the Bar, get more staff. Very poor service and would definitely not stay there again.

Lovely room, nice hotel, polite and helpful staff. Only complaint was that tv had been set to switch on at 1am which woke up myself, husband and 3 year old, staff were apologetic but still annoying trying to get young child back to sleep and specifically booked into hotel during travels to avoid being tired next day!

My booking was for 3 people - myself and two older teenagers. I notified on my booking that we would not arrive until midnight. On arriving in the room at this late hour, the sofa bed was not made up and no sheets or duvet were in the room for the third person. There was not a third cup, there was only one set of towels and there were only two teabags and two sachets of coffee. When I opened the sofa bed I was appalled at the mattress - it had no padding at all between the springs and the cotton cover. It was simply unusable as a bed even for a small child. The male staff member on the reception was extremely helpful and brought two quilts to use a mattress toppers. With both these on the bed the springs could still be felt. After a long drive I was too tired to go to reception again and had a very uncomfortable and restless night. It was a huge contrast to my stay at another Holiday Inn just 7 days earlier.
Breakfast was awful. There was no trolley to clear trays to and there were many trays on tables. When I went to get some toast, another person sat on my table next to my full cup of tea. Chaos doesn't describe this adequately.

I arrived late at night, very friendly reception and first impressions were good. Bit disappointed having to parade my scruffy laundry back through reception and past the dining room to the ironing room, as irons and boards are no longer available for the bedrooms. Possibly one of the smartest Holiday Inn Express hotels I've stayed in but still haven't worked out what benefits I'm supposed to receive as a gold member as this hotel also doesn't appear to recognise membership.
