Lovely room, nice hotel, polite and helpful staff. Only complaint was that tv had been set to switch on at 1am which woke up myself, husband and 3 year old, staff were apologetic but still annoying trying to get young child back to sleep and specifically booked into hotel during travels to avoid being tired next day!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Siouxsie64 Appallingly poor sofa bed.
My booking was for 3 people - myself and two older teenagers. I notified on my booking that we would not arrive until midnight. On arriving in the room at this late hour, the sofa bed was not made up and no sheets or duvet were in the room for the third person. There was not a third cup, there was only one set of towels and there were only two teabags and two sachets of coffee. When I opened the sofa bed I was appalled at the mattress - it had no padding at all between the springs and the cotton cover. It was simply unusable as a bed even for a small child. The male staff member on the reception was extremely helpful and brought two quilts to use a mattress toppers. With both these on the bed the springs could still be felt. After a long drive I was too tired to go to reception again and had a very uncomfortable and restless night. It was a huge contrast to my stay at another Holiday Inn just 7 days earlier.
Breakfast was awful. There was no trolley to clear trays to and there were many trays on tables. When I went to get some toast, another person sat on my table next to my full cup of tea. Chaos doesn't describe this adequately.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Tamistar Great location for Colchester and surrounding area
I arrived late at night, very friendly reception and first impressions were good. Bit disappointed having to parade my scruffy laundry back through reception and past the dining room to the ironing room, as irons and boards are no longer available for the bedrooms. Possibly one of the smartest Holiday Inn Express hotels I've stayed in but still haven't worked out what benefits I'm supposed to receive as a gold member as this hotel also doesn't appear to recognise membership.

double bed in our room 44 has a soft edge divan which means whwn 1 person is in bed and another gets in you bounce all over the place...no rest if your partner moves in bed.. could do with firm edge divans.

Ive been to this hotel a few times, the actual hotel is lovely, modern & clean. The staff seem very lacking in customer care. I sat in reception (right by the desk) from 8:30 am until 12 mid day due to a broken down vehicle and not once did anyone ask how I was or if I needed help.
even in the food area staff pushed past me and ignored me.
The basic breakfast selections have been cut down so much more than my previous visit. No jam, marmite ,muffins, fresh fruit.
The pain au chocolate were over cooked. Did not try croissants due to lack of jam.
Still disappointed people are encouraged to smoke by the entrance. We have to walk through them and stink of smoke, making our room stink too.
Also when I was sitting in the reception, the smoke was getting in. So the staff were not working in a 'smoke free' environment
please rethink this and do what other hotels do-request smokers keep a distance from entrances.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by nikkiabsy13 quiet location, easily accessible
always use this hotel when I go to visit family. This time it was not such good standard; I stayed a Mon-Weds with my 11 year old last week. Room had not had a vacuum, since last person had used it- I complained and this was rectified. Breakfast was not replenished and so had to wait both days- never had this problem before. But will use again for the location and relaxing time we have

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Finchie21 Very friendly staff and very good value for money
My husband and I where staying in this hotel as we were in Colchester for the week. We were made very welcome on our arrival and that continued throughout out stay. The food was excellent and the room was lovely and clean. Even though it was near a very busy road we couldn't hear the traffic at all. We would certainly stay here again if in the area.

We had a comfortable stay. The room was very clean. It was a lovely and spacious shower.
There was enough choice for breakfast. Very friendly reception staff.
The only thing missing was some biscuits to go with my cup of tea.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Sant0224 Unreliable housekeeping services
Stayed in this property for three nights because of a very enjoyable experience last year. But this time around, I was let down by the housekeeping experience. On Day 2, I stayed in most of the time and made sure the do not disturb sign had been taken back into the room from 9:30 onwards. I waited and waited and until 2:30 pm, no one came cleaning the room. I called the reception and a staff member told me the housekeeping staff had left and offered to give me clean towels and a toilet roll. That never happened.:-(. Not sure how they decide when a room needs servicing and when it does not. Very disappointing experience.

Value for money. Stop here if you need a bed for the family and a reasonable breakfast for some hungry little people! Would definitely try Holiday Inn again. Any problems just ask and they sort you out very quickly.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Lindy21 Lovely hotel, very clean & comfortable
We stayed here as a family of 4 on a weekend break with three other families.. This is a lovely clean & very modern hotel, the rooms are the best we have stayed in at this level of hotel. Breakfast was ample & it is a nice gesture that this is included in the price, we would certainly stay here again for what was a relatively inexpensive weekend break. The only thing that spoilt it for us & our friends was the bar prices, we had drinks there on the first evening when we all arrived but went elsewhere the second evening due to the extortionate prices. This was a pity as we would have liked to have stayed in the hotel following a meal that we had in a nearby pub, & have a few drinks before going to bed, but could not afford to!

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Senior70 Unconfortable bed and bad smell
There was a smell of sewerage on arrival outside the hotel. We were only given one key initially which meant when i had to go to the car I left my wife in darkness. Poor quality bed ( soft ) and duvet had three small burn holes. Scrambled egg at breakfast was hard and there was little choice. Coffee latte had no taste and black coffee was little better. Coffee in the room was best! If you have to stay in this area for other reasons (like a family celebration) it is convenient, but disappointing compared with our experience of other Holiday Inns. Access from the south is confusing to say the least. There are two Shell Garages !

New property and all works fine. Gas station outside the front door with a shop, perfect for me.
Leave the property run down to Daedham and back 5 miles and get a Lucazade (Gatorade of UK!) Perfect

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Annabell123 What a treat
My husband and myself decided to stay on Sat 13.07.2013 as we needed an early start to meet our granddaughter for a birthday treat in Clacton.
Unfortunately we got held up on the way and arrived at 10pm, too late for dinner. We were hungry, thirsty and tired. The receptionist a young lady called Tamara was more than helpful, we ordered a take away to be delivered and she organised plates and cutlery, coffee and drinks, what a star.
The room was spacious, comfortable, and clean and the bed was fantastic. The bathroom again was spotless. The breakfast choice was good and the quality of the cooked items was super. I would stay again.

This was my first visit to your Hotel. I was really shocked at the luxury of your Hotel. The whole place was kept to an outstanding grade. The room was spotless and very nicely decorated. Staff were very welcoming and polite. The late check out on a Sunday was a great benefit. If all you other premises are of the same standard. Your hotel would be my first choice of stay when booking in the future. A Hotel to be recommended to anyone.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Marpa27 Good hotel and staff. Shame about the breakfast.
This hotel was very good value and the staff were efficient, helpful and friendly. Must give Trisha a special thankyou as she was so helpful, friendly and informative. Room was very nice but could have done with some more shelves, as in most other HI Expresses, to put our clothes on as we stayed 7 nights. Only given 1 star re breakfast as this was a real let-down. The brown bread was very basic thin sliced and either did not toast hardly at all or burnt. Scrambled egg was like rubber as too much had been put out at one time. Sausages were basic and virtually burnt every morning. They also ran out of butter one morning when it was not that busy. If this was an HI and not Express, I would book room only and go out for breakfast but overall we liked the hotel and the staff.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by JOHN048 4 DAY BREAK
THE HOTEL WAS VERY MODERN AND CLEAN, ROOM WAS ALSO VERY CLEAN AND WELL SERVICED EACH DAY. THE CHECK IN WAS SMOOTH AND EFFICIENT WITH NO PROBLEMS. WE ATE IN THE RESTERAUNT THE FIRST NIGHT, THE MENU WAS NOT VERY EXTENSIVE AND THE MEAL WE HAD WAS NOT OF A VERY HIGH STANDARD, WE BOTH HAD CHICKEN BURGER & CHIPS, IT WASN'T REALLY A BURGER JUST A CHICKEN BREAST IN A BUN, CHIPS WERE ALMOST CREMATED.
AT BREAKFAST NEXT MORNING WE HAD TO ASK TO HAVE A TABLE WIPED CLEAN AND ALSO HAD TO ASK FOR BUTTER FOR THE TOAST, CUTTLERY WAS ALMOST EMPTY AND NO SERVIETTES AVAILABLE. THERE SEEMED TO BE ONLY ONE YOUNG GIRL CLEARING THE TABLES AND SHE DID NOT SEEM TO BE IN MUCH OF A HURRY, IT SEEMED TO BE ABOUT THE SAME FOR EACH OF THE OTHER BREAKFAST TIMES. WE ATE OUT FOR THE REST OF OUR MAIN MEALS.
APART FROM THE BREAKFAST TIME DISSAPOINTMENT IT WAS A PLEASANT AND GOOD VALUE BREAK, WE WOULD USE THE HOTEL AGAIN.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by askin69 Another great stay!
We arrived late on a Saturday night after work. Despite booking a double, they only had a twin room left as hotel was full. Not a huge problem as it meant our room was closer to reception, and they offered us some free drinks at the bar as compensation;)
Great room, lovely breakfast.

We used the hotel twice as a stop over from and to the ferry Harwich - Hook of Holland. The room is as new (June 2013) and was very clean.
Dinner in the evening looks like an old pub. Not so much to choose but tasted very well.

Stayed at same hotel a year ago, for same reason, as good stopover following ferry back from Holland to Harwich.
Staff we met were very friendly as well as being professional.
Very good quality room and the sofa bed was made up for us prior to arrival. Nice breakfast with a good variety of choice between hot items, contineltal type, cereals and toast. Overall a very enjoyable experience and would fully recommend.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Kat76 Clean, friendly & good value
New Holiday Inn Express, so nice, modern and clean as expected.
Nice bathroom with large walk-in shower (no bath).
Staff very friendly and helpful.
Bed too soft for my liking.
Room decor very dull and cold-looking (navy blues and lilacs) colours and lighting not great - in bathroom the lighting is not suitable for trying to apply makeup, and neither is it good enough in the main room full length mirror.
Cooked breakfast had poor selection, but continental style was good.
Would stay here again as it's great value, easy to get to location, clean & friendly.
Note: If you don't book direct with Holiday Inn, you don't get your Priority Club Points :-( But you do still get recognition at the front desk and discounts off restuarant food :-)

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Jesmine88 Not recommended for traveller who intends to use public transport
Me and my friend were stuck there because we have no own transport to reach to the town. Google map saying that there is a bus 247 running in the area but when we were there, we realised that the bus services was not that frequent. So we have to spend £12 for cab to get there from Colchester station. As we don't want to spend more on cab, we decide to go out by walk. But the roads around that area has no way for pedestrian. And according to the residents staying around, there is no specific bus stop that you can wait for the bus as well as the schedule of bus services. However, it is a clean and neat room with nice decorations. It would be a great place to stay if you have your own transport. So it is highly not recommended for traveller like us who use public transport.
