Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 Pool security and breakfast utencils
Of the 2 gates into the swimming pool area, only the gate from the parking lot was unlocked when we arrived. The gate accessible from the side door of the hotel was locked. The next morning, both gates were locked and made the pool area inaccessible for any purpose including sitting and reading out doors. This hotel has no other outside sitting area. The sitting area inside is small and, being adjacent to the great room, quite noisy.
The breakfast utencils were flimsy light weight plastic and too flimsy to be much use for anything.
The breakfast ran out of cinnamon rolls!

Great to get access to a room in the middle of the night, absolutely no complaints. Room was fantastic, hotel was clean and staff were awesome. The room was a tad bit smaller than others in the chain but thats not an issue.

If you are traveling to Ft. Payne for business, family or just passing through you will quickly discover there are not a lot of sleep options. Of course there are some budget hotels and then there is something better while on a budget. This HI meets the expectation you might expect from other HI's but it doesn't have the feeling of "new" some of the others have.
I am aware this hotel is old and has been remodeled several times but my impression the remodeled this last time on a budget. IMO the hotel needs new lobby and hallway carpets because there was an odd smell in the common areas. (It wasn't offensive but it did smell odd) The rooms were fine but I have stayed at better HI's.
All things considered I would stay here again and recommend this hotel to others but a few improvements would make this hotel a better stay.
