Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rafflesbeau Wot no muesli?
We like Holiday Inns, and the Gloucester Express is well up to standard. The bed was comfortable, the room warm, the dog welcome and the bathroom soooooooooooo clean! My only gripe is that there was no muesli at breakfast and when I asked I was told they don't offer muesli. Come on HIE, everybody but everybody offers muesli for breakfast! Apart from that it was excellent and very good value. (But no muesli. I can't believe that in this day and age a hotel does not offer muesli. Really, can you believe it? Honestly, no muesli.............)

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kathy24 Great room, value and service
We stayed en route to our holiday in Cornwall as the location was very suitable as close to the M5. We were very impressed with the standard of room and good value. We were traveling with our dog and were allocated a convenient room by very helpful staff. We thought the inclusive breakfast a very welcome bonus.

Room very good although I thought providing 2 tea bags a bit mean.
(I did get more from the dining area)
Very friendly and pleasant staff.
Only complaint was breakfast - no bacon ! Otherwise good range of food with good quality muesli and orange juice.
As you are near the relatives I visit, I will be staying again !

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by MJC404 Lovely room, poor breakfast
Our room, including the bed, was clean and very comfortable. It was also very quiet, despite the hotel being quite full. The reception staff were cheerful and helpful. Breakfast choices are always somewhat limited but on our second morning the scrambled egg ran out by about 8.30, leaving a lot of people rather upset. Consequently, the only choices for hot food were sausages and baked beans, together with toast.
However, this hotel is very conveniently situated for touring the Gloucestershire area so we are quite likely to use it again. Hopefully, when we do next use it, we might get a decent breakfast.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Traveller27 Pleasant stay.
Standard Holiday Inn Express. I had a pleasant 3 day stay with no major problems or annoyances. The value for money was very good for the rate I paid.
Bed was comfortable and breakfast reasonable. Good modern beverage dispenser for coffee / hot chocolate etc.
There were a couple of minor faults in the room - one of the lights did not work and the soap dispenser in the shower needed replacing as it did not work very well. These are faults that need very good housekeeping staff to pick up on.
The location was good for visiting Gloucester and for South Wales.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by AlsSpringer Hotel ok, pub next door needs avoiding.
Standard Holiday Inn Express but not the best I have stayed in. The last time I stayed the bar was not well stocked and I arrived in my room to find the toilet had been used and left unflushed all day - not ideal! Staff are pleasant and helpful though and it will be better if they complete the rollout of Sky TV in the rooms.
Perhaps the worst bit is the pub next door that does evening meals and due to the hotels location this is important. During the winter it's cold and drafty unless your lucky enough to get a table next to the fire - not managed that yet! The service is poor, slow and sometimes wrong and the food is not the best - small portions and never very hot. The last time I was there they served me a main course on a plate with the biggest chip out of the side you can imagine.
Overall, having stayed here a number of times I will stay in the hotel again. However, until the pub changes considerably I will not be eating there. Consequently, I don't recommend using the package including dinner.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by FbillP Working during Chelteham Cup Week
I can only give a fair to average overall rating, mainy for the reasons below:
I had to work during Cheltenham Cup Week - but not at the Races. The Hotel, location and staff were fair enough but the price for the 3 night stay during this week left me pretty dazed. - V.Expensive.! Like 3+ times regular rate.!
OK I knew it would be busy and I had to work, so not much choice as this is as near as I could get to where I needed to be for the week.
I phone ahead to give at least 4+ hours notice of my late pm arrival - even though I had pre-booked via The Priority Club system.
On arrival the front lounge was packed and I had to wait for service to check in. Then I had to wait for them to "print out" a check in form that had not been done and so on....
I got the impression that some of the other staff were aslo "occupied" out the back.
What happened to The Priority Club = Express CheckIn. ?
Esp. as I had given the extra courtsey of phoning ahead.
After a long night drive, I was not impressed by this at all.
I am a Priority Club Gold member and frequent Holi Inn establishments fairly often.
My room was on ground floor and not too far away from lifts and main drag of the lobby etc. OK easy access. But for two if the nights the "Racing Guests" were pretty noisy and with a good deal of very loud voices and some banging and crashing going on until 1-2 am.
Also not too impressed with that. I was on the edge of complaining to reception but decided not to make a fuss. - Maybe I should have ?
Front Desk attendance and service for the rest of the stay was pretty good however - esp. If I avoided the "Race Goers" queques.
Conclusion: I you have to work in the area and are NOT going to the Races, avoid this Hotel (at this price) or try to change your travel dates for a less busy time. Then it will be fine and as expected for Holi Inn Ex.
PS. The breakfast sausages at Holi Inn Ex's in the area have become really uninspiring. I think they could do much much better and without adding anything significantly to the costs.

Excellent - although I normally stay ine various hotels including Holiday Inn - this is the only the second Holiday Inn Express I have stayed in, the first only recently in Germany. I was very much surprised of the very high standard in both placess. The service, room and help was what I would expect from hotels which are a lot more expensive.
If I had to pick a fault it would be allowing some guests (be in part of the same party) going for breakfast in their pyjamas', my wife was ready to walk out of the room.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by AG1700 The Cleanest, friendliest hotel
In the last 7 years we've stayed at many Gloucestershire hotels - some 4 Star in and around Cheltenham & Gloucester. This is the cleanest, friendliest and most comfortable of all. The food at breakfast is good, fresh and more than adequate. The staff are friendly and helpful and effiicient. Excellent value and they don't rip you off.
We could write more but can't under the writing guidelines cant mention individual staff - but given out dates, you can find out.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by AllanL Room comfort
Arrivng in room 317 at about 5pm on a winter's day I found it to be colder than the corridor, where the heater was not working. I set the room heater to maximum and by 9pm the room had reached 15 degrees. Left on full all night, by the following morning the room had reached 18 degrees. The bathroom, which has no heater or heated towel rail, was somewhat colder - not a place to linger.
What sort of hotel switches all heating off in a top, corner room in the middle of winter when the room heater is inadequate? The cold and road noise from the window didn't help.
And 30 minutes free wi-fi compares unfavourably with other HIE hotels I have used recently.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Shane54 Really bad
I have been all over the world in several different hotels and this is one of the worst Ive been to. The rooms are situated next to a high way with a lot of traffic 24/7 and the sound isolation is close to nothing so sleeping is hard.
The breakfast contains of pre fabricated eggs and nasty sausages, toasts with just bread and butter and yoghurts which flavours tastes very artificiell.
There no gym and the only wifi they have is not included in the room rate. So if you can my recommendation is to use the other non express Holiday inn in Glouchester and stay away from this one.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by PRITCH A FREEZING ROOM ON A COLD NIGHT
I ARRIVED AT THE HOTEL ON 12th FEB AT AROUND 6PM. AFTER A LONG DRIVE, THERE WAS SNOW ON THE GROUND AND TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE WERE NEAR FREEZING.
I COLLECTED MY ROOM CARD AND FOUND IT WOULD NOT OPEN THE ROOM DOOR AS STATED ON THE CARD, WHEN I CHECKED AT RECEPTION IT WAS NOTED I HAD BEEN GIVEN THE WRONG ROOM CARD. I COLLECTED THE CORRECT CARD FOR ROOM 204 AND WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR THE ROOM WAS FREEZING.i INSERTED THE CARD IN THE ELECTRICITY UNIT AND TURNED ON THE SMALL HEATER LOCATED UNDER THE OUTSIDE WALL WINDOW HOPING THE ROOM WOULD HEAT UP.
AFTER SEVERAL HOURS AT MAX SETTING THE ROOM DID NOT EVEN REACH A COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURE.
I WENT TO RECEPTION TO COMPLAIN AND I WAS TOLD BY ONE OF THE RECEPTIONISTS THAT "ROOMS COULD NOT BE HEATED PRIOR TO OCCUPATION BECAUSE THAT WOULD AFFECT THE CARBON FOOTPRINT", I WAS ASTONISHED THAT THIS COULD TAKE PRECIDENCE OVER CUSTOMER CARE.
THE FOLLOWING MORNING AFTER A FREEZING NIGHT AND A CHILL, I ALSO COMPLAINED TO THE RECEPTION MANAGER AND AS A PRIORITY CLUB MEMBER THAT I INTENDED TO COMPLAIN TO IHG. HE TOLD ME IT COULD HELP IN THAT IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ROOM HEATING WOULD BE SPEEDED UP.
I WILL REQUIRE A SATISFACTORY OUTCOME TO THIS ISSUE.

Room was as comfortable as expected with everything that was needed. Hotel was very quiet so the room was quite cold when we arrived and took a fair while to warm up to a reasonable temperature. This was the only minor complaint with everything else more than satisfactory. Staff very friendly, room spotless and breakfast perfect for our needs. Would recommend.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Dorsetboy57 Great hotel - noisy room
Stayed at this hotel for one night recently and I left there slightly disappointed.
It wasn't the hotel, it certainly wasn't the staff - both came up to the usual high standards I know from using this chain a lot. It was the room and to be more precise, the proximity of the room to the road and the noise that came from it.
As a seasoned traveller I always carry earplugs and were they ever needed that night. Room 130 is a corner room and without the earplugs I doubt if I would have had much sleep.
Secondary double glazing would have helped and should be invested in.
It's a good job that you don't offer a 'good nights sleep guarantee' or I would have asked for a refund.
PS, I know the previous guest left a day early from paperwork left in the room. However, it was apparent that the room had not been cleaned before I took it as the litter bins were full.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Henry99 Fantastic value, excellent staff
We visited the hotel in January 2013. Such a convenient location close to the motorway and only a couple of minutes walk to the Park and Ride into Gloucester. Very comfortable room, well thought out with lamps and sockets conveniently placed - a touch often missing in similar hotels. The bed was comfortable with a choice of firm and soft pillows clearly marked. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room were very welcome. The shower room was clean with a powerful shower. The staff we encountered were excellent - pleasant and informative. Breakfast choice was superb. The price we paid for the room and breakfast was excellent value. Can also recommend the Bumble Bee restaurant,. literally adjacent to the hotel car park. The staff and food there are also excellent. We will definitely return to the hotel when we are in the area again.

Bed was not made up on checking in. Spoke with foreign girl on reception and was not convinced she understood me. Spoke with another person and told them to make the bed up as we were going out until late but wanted the bed made for when we got back. When we got in the bed had not been made. Complained and made bed up myself then trod on a needle in the carpet. By this stage I was annoyed. Was told we could have some additional priority points.were then told that there was nobody able to put points on to card! In the morning waited 30 minutes for sausages! On complaining of my problems was told the manager would email and most likely we would get a free stay.have heard nothing since. Very disappointed. Avoid this hotel like the plague!
