Last November, my husband and I had decided to get away for our 38th Anniversary. Since we care for an elderly parent, we didn't want to go any further than about six hours away. I am very cautious about making my hotel reservations. I check out the websites, talk with the front desk directly, and check out the reviews and photos. We had decided to try a hotel in Lake Charles. We arrived late in the evening, and what we found was a misrepresented hotel in a questionable part of town. It was so late, and we were so tired that we stayed the night. I was horribly disappointed and just wanted to cut our getaway short, and go back home. We checked out early the next morning.
As we traveled towards home, we tried to decide if we wanted to find another hotel along the way. Taking the back roads was going to take us through Lufkin, so I contacted the hotel and spoke with Sonia. I told her of our terrible experience with the other IHG Hotel. She said that she didn't have the Jacuzzi Suite available, but had a nice King Suite with a Balcony. We made the reservation and arrived about 3pm. Sonia had taken it upon herself to call the people who had reserved the Jacuzzi Suite to make sure that they were still coming. She explained that it was our 38th Anniversary, and how we had had such a miserable experience. The gentleman told her that he and his wife were going to be arriving pretty late, and offered to have her give us their room and to choose another for their reservation.
When we arrived Sonia was excited and bubbly and gave us a really warm welcome. She told us what she had done and about the generosity of the other couple. We were so appreciative for her thoughtfulness. We went to our room, and found that she had gone even beyond that kindness. She had placed tea candles around the Jacuzzi, and red silk roses petals and silver Hershey Kisses in heart shapes on the bed and desk. She had left us an Anniversary Card and enclosed a certificate for Dinner for Two at the best steakhouse in town.
My husband travels 75% of the time. We use our points for time away, when we can. We have never seen such consideration in the 30+ years that we have traveled. Sonia not only rescued our Anniversary Getaway, but made me see that the world still has special people who selflessly give of their time and attention to help others.
Thank you Sonia for your loving kindness to us.

This is a very nicely laid out hotel with great suite rooms with small patios. Great layout for comfort. Nice beds and tv. Kitchenette area is great. Access to room is easy. Like so many hotels the couch is never very comfortable and if there is an easy chair it usually isn't either. They all use similar living room furniture. Bed was an exception and roomy. Breakfast is pretty much the same with the same across the board. They could use some different type eggs much like McDonald's and others use on the egg my muffins at times versus the folded ones. Just a little variance. This hotel does start their morning coffee and breakfast early to accommodate early risers, workers and travelers which is great and should be across the board. Others don't open to 6 and 6:30 when you need to be gone which adds a little rush to your morning. This hotel got really busy the night we checked in and the lady was really working hard to accommodate everyone. No luggage carts

Holiday Inn Express has always been a nice place to stay. The hotel in Lufkin was the first place were we experienced any issue. It was a minor issue but one that does affect your perception of the chain. The room and bathroom were clean. However, the carpet in the hallway had debris that should have been vacuumed prior to guest checking in.
