Great HIE property that I have returned to several times over the past year. Friendly, welcoming staff, clean rooms and property have always been found on my arrival.
Had a very convenient room this time on the ground floor steps away from the front desk. Only minor disturbance was sound of trash truck pick up early (before 6:30am?) the day of my stay. Would be nice to get this scheduled later in the day.
Good internet reception in rooms and nice variety of breakfast offerings to get your day off to a good start.
Finally, I liked convenient location close to the Aquarium and local restaurants...enjoyed my safe evening walk through town and along the ocean in Pacific Grove.
If you are coming to Monterey, it will be hard to beat this property for your stay!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Devin28 Great Location to stay when visiting Monterey Bay Aquarium
We had a restful nights sleep at this hotel, and the breakfast in the morning was great. I would highly recommend this hotel to family and friends.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by epc1 Acceptable for the area
The Monterey area is expensive and delivers below average on most everything; restaurants, hotels, beaches, etc. The Holiday Inn Express appears to have been converted from an old existing hotel with odd architecture, an open format with open catwalks to rooms, where rolling luggage and running kids make noise. There are 2 rooms on each floor near the elevator, and the rest requires a short flight of stairs to the outdoor catwalk. Pick your poison: noise from elevator traffic or from rolling luggage on the catwalk. The place is clean and well-maintained, but not as nice as a late model enclosed hotel. The breakfast area is small and cramped. Visit the Monterey aquarium, then drive past the aquarium along the coast to see the best public-access beaches and rocks. The 17-mile drive for $10 is not worth it, just go further south and visit big sandy Carmel beach, then drive down to Big Sur to see unspoiled coastline that is better than the 17-mile golf course tour.

A good clean room, a comfortable bed, and friendly staff. Great location and great views, not much more you could want.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Corb2000 Great service and a nice change from usual corporate hotel design
This hotel is easy to miss as its design blends in so well with the surrounding domestic scale buildings. There was plenty of parking space in the basement and service from all of the staff was super efficient. Note that this HIE is a mile from the centre and pier of Monterey, which has far more facilities than Cannery Row.
Very close to the attractions of Cannery Row, including a reasonable choice of restaurants
Quiet area, so very little traffic or street noise even at ground floor level
Great staff service throughout
Complimentary wine hour in the late afternoon
The hotel's design and layout is much more interesting that a standard HIE, with quiet outdoor seating areas and large bedrooms
Not so good points:
- Breakfast is standard HIE fare, well managed but nothing that exciting
