The room could have use a little more thorough vacuuming, this was not brought to the attention of the staff because we were there for only 1 night. The staff was polite and friendly, the beds are king size we had a small problem, of a yellow stain on one of bed linen) which the cleaning staff apologize and replaced immediately. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Older (Renovated) Hotel I try to stay at newer HIEs because the older ones are really hit or miss. When booking this hotel, the hotel overview read "New Holiday Inn Express..."; so I booked it. On the day of arrival, I read the last paragraph, "Newly renovated..."; very frustrating and misleading. The Good: The hotel is definitely older, with new HIE fixtures, flooring, and furniture. It looks good. Beds are comfortable, rooms are clean, baths are updated. The Bad: The halls and rooms reek of a, strong, chemical air-freshener. Fixtures in the bathroom were in obvious disrepair (most notably, the towel holder was rusted, and nearly falling off the wall; maids had perched the towels on it, but when you took one off, they all fell on the toilet). Towels had a strong burnt smell; indicative of a malfunctioning dryer. Breakfast was the worst I have had at a HIE. They were out of most things, both morning I was there. No fresh fruit the first morning, only 2 apples the second. No pancake maker. No coffee lids. No oatmeal first morning, only a few packs of a single flavor the second. Hot bar food was lackluster. Overall, it is apparent HIE put a fair amount of money in the renovation of this hotel, but stopped there. Given the issues I have seen, it could either be poor management, or a lack of funds. Either way, I will stay elsewhere during my Richmond visits (likely at another hotel brand). April 16, 2015

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by better experience than previously I previously stayed at this property when they were renovating in 2014 and it was a disaster. Since I do enjoy staying at HIX hotels, I wanted to give this location another try, since it was close to my brother's home while visiting for the Easter weekend. I am impressed !! The place has definitely been renovated to the standards of HIX hotels I've stayed at in several cities.The popcorn machine was a nice touch, the rooms were clean, no smoking allowed is a big plus. It was quiet and the bed was comfy. The breakfast was outstanding !!! There was plenty of food, even at 8:30am and the service was excellent. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.
