Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Glad to have made this choice This is a very nice hotel overall. It is located a little off to the edge of downtown but has a shuttle van that will take you anywhere in center city and pick you up again. The usual wait was about 5 minutes, maximum 10 minutes. Desk staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. This was the plus factor that made this hotel a good choice. The only negative to be aware of is the elevated commuter train that passes over the Ben Franklin bridge a short distance away. The train is audible from your room but not so intrusive that I lost any sleep, but if you are really sensitive it could be a problem. That said, there is probably more street noise on the lower floors of a downtown hotel. I don't mean to overemphasize - June 30, 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Noise starts in the driveway and never ends This property used to be a Comfort Inn, it was recently renovated and rebranded as a Holiday Inn Express. It does not allow pets or smoking, both good policies. It offers free internet, both wired and wireless. The parking lot is small and guests have to pay to park. The view of the Benjamin Franklin bridge is great. The HIE website says the distance to Eastern State Penitentiary is 1.5 miles, the distance is actually 2.5 miles; this is significant because the free shuttle only operates within a 2 mile radius. It is not a problem because Philadelphia has a great public transportation system. Walk over to 2nd and Arch, catch bus #48, and be dropped off directly in front of the Penitentiary. We only used the hotel shuttle once; it was convenient if you can stand the endless stream of questions from the driver. Loud music from Morgan's Pier Outdoor Nightclub was very annoying, and lasted until 2 am every night. There is a lot of noise from the adjacent freeways and trains. The biggest problem with this hotel is that it is too popular; the lobby is crowded and the breakfast bar is crowded. The views are good from all sides of the building, and it is within walking distance of the Independence Mall area, subway station, and bus stops. The desk clerk graciously called a taxi for us when we needed one, and it came within 5 minutes (All City Cab Company). The entire staff was pleasant to deal with. The music in the lobby is annoying and unnecessary. There are two large screen TVs within steps of the front desk and the sound from the TV mixing with the PA music is irritating. The PA music can also be heard outside the front entrance, this is also distracting. There are two breakfast bar attendants and they can barely keep up with demand. There often are no available tables. The breakfast bar hours should be expanded from 3 hours to 4 hours to alleviate some of the pressure. There was one night of our five night stay in which the drunken college students next door kept us awake half the night. Hotels should know that if they rent to college students then there will be a party. There is a central exhaust system to vent the bathrooms, but it could not quite prevent the mirror from fogging. There was only one towel bar in the bathroom, travelers need at least three. June 28, 2013

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by poor customer service and parking We specifically reserved this location because of the cirque d'soliel at the waterfront at Camden. We asked the front desk clerk if she knew a good way to get there and she suggested that she did and would print out directions for us. Unfortunately, she gave us directions for the South Waterfront in Camden. We didn't know that was wrong until we followed the directions. The area she led us to looked like a bombed out city full of deserted warehouses. It was an awful area and looked quite dangerous to be honest. That was bad enough, but to charge @25.00 for parking was the last straw. I could understand if this location was in the heart of town where parking would be at a real premium, but that certainly didn't look like the case there. Please instruct your staff as to the correct directions to the local attractions and reconsider your parking fee. June 24, 2013

We love the fact that we can count on spacious, clean rooms and friendly staff everywhere we go. We found this here also. We ended up staying longer than we had planned because we were so comfortable and the location was perfect for Philly sightseeing. The free shuttle was a big plus for us. June 21, 2013

We were extremely pleased with the location so close to the historic landmarks and with the cleanliness and amenities included in our stay. We have shied away from Holiday Inns the last few years but this one was super! We will try them again before long. June 10, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor standard to others Extremely noisy as right on interstate freeway noise was loud plus hot water was not working first night stayed there plus water being shut off on day of checking out to catch long flight back to australia not good. Breakfast was crowded and no white or multigrain bread just wholemeal. Cereal choices were sugary. Disappointing didnt get much sleep very noisy from highway traffic and not insulated for noise obviously. June 10, 2013

The hotel is close to the highway and you could hear it from our room, but we were all able to sleep well. We had a nice view of the city and bridge. The staff was pleasant and helpful. We walked over to South street and it was 93 degrees and we were tired and we called the shuttle driver and he picked us up in about 10 minutes. The location is great for all the historic sites that you can walk to or take the shuttle. The beds were nice and comfortable. June 7, 2013

However, the freeway noise in my room was incredibly loud. It was so loud that people on the phone kept asking me about it even though I wasn't using speakerphone. Also on the last day of my visit housekeeping skipped my room for some reason, which isn't a huge deal, but I have no idea why they didn't make it over. June 6, 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable Beds - Good TV - Excellent Staff We stay here frequently, sometimes twice a month, and have always been very happy with the room - very clean and beds are wonderful. Sometimes you get a room with a wonderful view of the river and Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and sometimes you get a room of the interstate, but if you ask ahead of time, they try to accomodate you with a good view. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The breakfast is adequate. We appreciate the free shuttle but you never know if it's going to be full so you either have to be ready to get to your destination very early, or walk or take a cab. But hey, it's a free shuttle. Sometimes I feel like they aren't equipped to handle the number of guests they have - there have been busloads of kids there at times and impossible to get into the breakfast area. But we continue to come back because we feel it's a good value. Also appreciate the microwave available in the lobby so we can eat in the room. Downside: street noise is pretty loud and not fun if you get a room with a view of the interstate. May 22, 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by great time I had a very good stay. I checked in and was recognized as a priority club member with a small gift of water and cookies. Yevonne at the front desk made me feel very welcome and handed me a key to a great room overlooking the river on the tenth floor. After getting settled, I went downstairs and asked Yevonne where I could get a true Philadelphia cheesesteak, she sent me to the right place and I enjoyed every bite. Good hotel! comfortable and located in walking distance to everything Philadelphia. May 21, 2013

The shuttle took us within 2 miles and breakfast was good. We would stay here again. If you do not need to be downtown, we would recommend this hotel. May 20, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Do not go the week of march madness While we arrived late to check in I had called to assure that our room was still available, upon arrival the room looked like someone had already been staying in it. As it was already too late to do anything about it and i was tired we went to relax and unwind form our 6 hour drive. The room next to us was a bunch of party goers and college kids causing a ruckus and upon complaining the the front desk someone had come up stairs and knocked on my door telling me to keep it down or i would be removed from the hotel. As i tried to explain that this was not our room but the room next door, the college kids had left to find an ihop in search of food. We had also been charged twice for parking as we parked their for an hour the night of the 21 and the day of the 22nd even though we had checked out at 10am May 20, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Penn's Landing is not at HIE standards I am a loyal Holiday Inn Express Gold Elite member, and I will continue to be, but the Penn's Landing property was a disappointment. When I checked out on the morning of May 9th, I advised the desk that the previous morning I had been trapped in the gated parking lot, unable to exit at 5:30am because the attendant was not at his station. The front desk told me that mine was a common complaint, but they had no control over the parking lot (which is on the HIE property and exclusive to the hotel). I also noted that my room had not been cleaned or attended in any way. I was assured, unnecessarily, that my room should have been cleaned, and I was given a curt apology. So, the notices in the room that "if any part of your stay is unsatisfactory, you will not have to pay for it" does not apply at Penn's Landing. I called the HIE Corporate Customer Service line later in the day, and received the concern and attention HIE customers have come to expect, with a specific game plan to address my situation with HIE Penn's Landing. Breakfast was HIE standard. The friendly and helpful staff acted very professionally during a (false) fire alarm. Excellent location to explore Philadelphia downtown and old town by foot. The furnishings in the room were excellent and I would recommend this HI to any one. I had the misfortune of falling while touring in Philadelphia and sprained my ankle. One of the night managers named Nick was caring enough to help me get to my room when he discovered that the wheelchair owned by the HI was not available. He was very kind and helpful. I don't remember when any employee of a hotel has been that gracious. The staff was excellent. May 10, 2013

Only issue we had was one bed smelled a little like urine, we didn't really investigate to far , we had a double bed room and used the other one without issue. We notified the staff mostly as an advisory for the cleaning staff. The hotel was full so we didn't ask for a new room. The location, in regards to proximity to touristy stuff was good despite being on the east side of 95. I wasn't expecting the walk to be that easy, but it was, just a few blocks and you are in the middle of historic Old City. April 29, 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful location and many activities I have stayed here 2 times this year (March and April). The staff is always so friendly and willing to go the extra mile. The river view is wonderful and it is very close to a lot of activities and very good restaurants. The only thing I couldn't figure out is why the nightly rate started going up so quick into the season. I would like to visit again but may have to wait until the price goes down. April 26, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Worst stay ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all I was not happy with the extra $25 per day on parking in their lot at this location. This is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My room had ants in it the next a.m. and I told the girl at the desk 3 times, she said they would either move me or they would come up and exterminate. I went to class that day and when I returned there were still ants in the room, nothing had been done. I called down and reported it again and they asked if I wanted to be moved. Well, of course I did, I was not sleeping in a room with ants and paying what I paid per night. Was finally moved to another floor but had to settle for 2 dbl beds instead of a king size like I originally had. There was no refrigerator in the room and I was all the way on the 10th floor and you could here the noise from the street below. I was awakened by crotch rockets racing down the street at 2:00 a.m. and I had to be up at 5:30 a.m. I had requested to have a wake up call and of course I never did receive that either. Rooms were extremely small for the amount of money I paid. Also there was an odor as soon as you got off the elevator. Would not recommend this hotel chain to anyone in the future. Another thing is when I placed my original reservation I was transferred to someone else who tried and tried to get me to sign up for a Holiday Inn Express Resort stay in 1 of 4 locations. I repeatedly told her that I needed to talk to my fiance but she kept on trying to get me to do this without me talking to him first. I repeatedly told her numerous times that we do not make decisions like that without each others consent and she continued to try and pursuade me to do it anyway. I was unable to attend due to us coming in very late in the evening. Customer care was excellent. Checking in was a breeze. I would recommend this Holiday Inn Express to by friends and family.
